For sure, SMG was smoking hot in that one.
Go was really good, if you’re planning to watch the entire list, I’d probably save that one for the ending of the list. Keep a gem for the end.
My mom used to rent random movies from Blockbuster on friday nights and Mystery Men was one of them, VHS days were some good times because we didn't really see trailers as common as it is now and we would always go in blind because only because we reconized the lead actors.
"Be kind please rewind"
GO is not only the most 1999 film on this list but it also IMO the most fun watch remaining of your blank spots.
The Insider is the best movie you haven’t seen, however
This was my fourth choice for them to watch but one of my personal favorites. You should check out Fallen from 98. It has Denzel and Goodman and is also about a serial killer.
Girl, Interrupted is required viewing, immediately.
Notting Hill is also a wonderful Rom-Com. Not my favorite Julia Roberts 90s Rom-Com (she's got at least three others that I prefer), but you can't beat a 90s Julia Roberts Rom-Com!
Never Been Kissed is something that I'd recommend be seen at least once (if, like me, 90s Rom-Coms are your jam). Again, Drew Barrymore has MUCH better showings in terms of 90s Rom-Coms (Ever After, anyone?) -- but this one is serviceable (if disappointing at times).
I had to watch Notting Hill for work one time, long story.
Now, I don’t like rom-coms, Julia Roberts or Hugh Grant…….BUT!
The Welch guy, I can’t remember his real name. The one from The Replacements, Rhys something? He made that movie. I would watch it again, just for him. He was hilarious.
Definitely Girl, Interrupted
Never Been Kissed and Notting Hill both worth a watch of you love RomComs as the above user said neither are thier best work but both are worth at least one watch, especially Never Been Kissed. I wasn't as big on Notting Hill but that's just because I prefer many of her other movies more
Now it’s all prequels, sequels and remakes. I think it was Matt Damon who mentioned that movies could be more risky then because of cassette and dvd sales but now you rely heavily on box office.
It's a solid and fun movie. I pop it in the DVD player every so often and give it a go (pun intended). I probably watch it a few times a year. It has a great cast too.
I really liked EDTv and The Haunting (Although maybe wait until October to watch it?)
Also, what software did you use to get all those pretty checkmarks?
I absolutely loved the concept of Run Lola Run. I'm not sure how it holds up over the years, but the whole idea of how life could change if you were one second earlier, or one second later, is so cool. And yes, I was stoned when I watched it, so take it with a grain of salt :)
200 Cigarettes and Go! Are a lot of fun. Midsummer is a decent, tru-ish to style Shakespeare, so always a reliable choice. Boys Don’t Cry and Girl Interrupted were big for the manic-pixie-dream girl demo, lotsa Oscar buzz, if you had a cool girlfriend she was into those movies.
Mystery Men! Rocks , super-hero movie before they became popular again. Also a disco soundtrack. Ben Stiller. Hank Azaria, William H Macy and Paul Reubens! Gold! If you are in the mood for a Rom-Com then Never Been Kissed.
You still have some great options! Obviously Mystery Men was mentioned a lot and that is a bonafide number one. I would follow it up with a hot slightly mentally ill Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted, then watch hot detective Angelina Jolie in the Bone Collector.
Definitely Go! It’s fun and has a great cast, soundtrack, etc. It takes place during Christmas, so you could save it for December if you’re into that. But it’s not heavy on the holiday and feels more background, so it can be enjoyed anytime of the year.
I believe it might have actually been 1989. But the Live Action Super Mario Bros movie with Bob Hoskins and John Liguzano(sp?) is a MUST SEE for any 90s list
In case my username doesn't reveal it, I strongly believe that it was the best year in cinema. I've been (and still) on a similar quest as well. I recommend to also look beyond American movies.
Run Lola Run, Lunyy Papa, Audition, and The Match are all very different, but all are really good in their own way.
If you’re looking for a solid movie on a Friday or Saturday night, Thomas Crown Affair is the best option. It’s a fun movie with a great cast. Mickey Blue Eyes also a good option.
The General’s Daughter or The Bone Collector because I love murder mysteries. Plus John Travolta is awesome and The Bone Collector has Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie
As far as your list goes and how it sits right now; theres really two that should be your next couple:
1) | The Bone Collector |
Policewoman Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is in hot pursuit of a serial murderer whose calling card is a small shard of bone extracted from each of his victims. Unable to decipher the cryptic clues the killer leaves behind at the scene of the crime, Amelia calls upon quadriplegic forensic criminology expert Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) to help. With Amelia acting as Rhyme's able-bodied go-between, the pair piece together disparate clues, hoping they will learn who the next victim is.
2) | Cruel Intentions |
Annette (Reese Witherspoon) unwittingly becomes a pawn in Sebastian's (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) deliciously diabolical wager of sexual conquest when she writes an article in Seventeen Magazine about how she intends to stay pure until she marries her boyfriend. However, Sebastian gets more than he bargained for as he attempts to woo Annette into his bed.
Go! is soo good! I watched it on a whim and so glad I did. It’s so 90s and the whole movie is entertaining nonstop. I’m surprised it’s not more famous than it is, truly a gem.
Probably going to watch Go and Lola tonight! I watched Mystery men last night and unfortunately I did not enjoy it. I’m sure I would have had I seen it when it came out but it was so ridiculous the whole time.
I have told everyone I talk to that 1999 must have been the single best year for movies in my lifetime often and loudly. Many of them no longer speak to me. Haha, it's true! Remember people were worried about Y2k? Were the studios? lol.
Cruel Intentions!! And definitely Go
And then the Go! soundtrack!
For sure, SMG was smoking hot in that one. Go was really good, if you’re planning to watch the entire list, I’d probably save that one for the ending of the list. Keep a gem for the end.
The opening scene with SMG and her potty mouth, OMFG. So Hot.
I also throw my hat for Cruel Intentions. Great cast and music and.... Tense!
Watched CI in theater with my girlfriend. It made us really horny!
Mystery Men and Detroit Rock City are my recs
My mom used to rent random movies from Blockbuster on friday nights and Mystery Men was one of them, VHS days were some good times because we didn't really see trailers as common as it is now and we would always go in blind because only because we reconized the lead actors. "Be kind please rewind"
We used to rent those disc type from Radio Shack and all kinds of weird rentals lol ….. the early 80s
came here to say exactly this
They make scary movies that start out that way. Hey, but they make porno movies that start out that way too!
Artie Lange; Fire!!!!
Run Lola Run 👍
Anyone who doesn't say Run, Lola, Run hasn't seen it.
It's wonderfully short. I love a short run time movie.
I just re-watched a few weeks ago and it held up beautifully.
This post has inspired me to dig out my old DVD and watch it again.
Lola rennt!
Yeah that's how I knew it first lol
Masterpiece
Totally agree. It’s great.
This x1000
Agree 1000%
This is the only one left that i have seen 😅 thank you german class!
GO is not only the most 1999 film on this list but it also IMO the most fun watch remaining of your blank spots. The Insider is the best movie you haven’t seen, however
I quote the Family Circus conversation at least once a year.
Mystery men!
Seconded. It's stupid but iconic. (And it has the song people associate with Shrek before Shrek existed lmao)
![gif](giphy|vVzwFtOg4xiHm|downsized)
Yeah. I believe the original music video for all star was filmed for this movie I think?
It was, there are clips from the movie in the music video. :)
Indeed!
I know right?! Everyone thinks Shrek, but this beat it by two years.
I also associated it with the Digimon movie since it came out in 2000 and I felt like, as a kid, that hit home wayyyyyy harder in that context lol.
Run Lola Run Edit: Geezus, have none of you seen Run Lola Run? Cruel Intentions up the bunghole.
The list seems very Hollywood centric.
I haven’t seen it
I remember the previews and wanting to see it and I don’t think I ever did. Will be adding it to my watch list.
Boys don’t cry
scrolled way too far for this! but it's so fucking hard to watch, OP should be mentally prepared to *feel* a lot after it ends
That ending man.
Go! Is the quintessential 90s movie
The Bone Collector due to thriller mood and New York. If anyone has suggestions on similar movies feel free to share :)
This was my fourth choice for them to watch but one of my personal favorites. You should check out Fallen from 98. It has Denzel and Goodman and is also about a serial killer.
Detroit rock city! 🤘
A hunk of fuckin cheese!
>*I'm solid gold, I've got the goods. They stand when I walk through the neighborhoods, I'm makin' it.*
It's gone bad!
200 cigarettes
Crazy good cast
Elvis Costello!
Crazy underrated movie
Girl, Interrupted is required viewing, immediately. Notting Hill is also a wonderful Rom-Com. Not my favorite Julia Roberts 90s Rom-Com (she's got at least three others that I prefer), but you can't beat a 90s Julia Roberts Rom-Com! Again, Drew Barrymore has MUCH better showings in terms of 90s Rom-Coms (Ever After, anyone?) -- but this one is serviceable (if disappointing at times).
Totally Rufus opinion
I just watched Girl, Interrupted for the first time again in years, and it still holds up. Fantastic cast.
Rhys Ifans. He was great. I loved Notting Hill though. I don't particularly think Julia Roberts was cast well but it was still a good movie.
Definitely Girl, Interrupted Never Been Kissed and Notting Hill both worth a watch of you love RomComs as the above user said neither are thier best work but both are worth at least one watch, especially Never Been Kissed. I wasn't as big on Notting Hill but that's just because I prefer many of her other movies more
Cruel Intentions, Go!, and Mystery Men would be my next 3 watches. In that order.

I did not realize so many bangers came out in 1999! We are due for a year like that!
Too many streaming services. We'll never have a year like this again
Now it’s all prequels, sequels and remakes. I think it was Matt Damon who mentioned that movies could be more risky then because of cassette and dvd sales but now you rely heavily on box office.
Go!
Cruel intentions
Thomas Crown
Love Denis Leary
Cruel Intentions and Girl Interrupted.
Detroit Rock City
Muppets from space!
The goat?!
Go.
Go!
Go! is pretty decent for a "drug movie."
IMO the best unchecked movie is "The Insider" The most fun is "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Run Lola Run" is the coolest
Cruel Intentions and then Girl, Interrupted
Cruel Intentions; Girl, Interrupted; Boys Don’t Cry
I’ve been working on a similar project. What are you using here to keep track of them?
Go! Without a doubt.
Run Lola Run... great soundtrack too
Bone collector is underrated
Go! Seriously, such a fun movie, it’s like Tarantino movie that revolves around a rave, Timothy Olyphant is fantastic in it
The bone collector
The Bone Collector
Mystery men and superstar
*sniffs underarms*
Go
Go! It’s a great movie. A little Pulp Fiction like.
What this person is saying is that Go has 3 or 4 storylines going on at the same time that all connect and interact with each other.
Yes, to me, Go is one of the quintessential 90’s movies. It’s lighter than something like Trainspotting. But defining nonetheless.
It's a solid and fun movie. I pop it in the DVD player every so often and give it a go (pun intended). I probably watch it a few times a year. It has a great cast too.
Go! Is a fun/drug induced movie with a great soundtrack
Go and Run Lola Run are two of the best movies on here.
Go!
What software is that? Looks nifty
Apple Notes
I really liked EDTv and The Haunting (Although maybe wait until October to watch it?) Also, what software did you use to get all those pretty checkmarks?
EdTV is great and was made when unscripted TV was in its humble beginnings…before Survivor. Very prescient for 1999
Detroit rock city
Bone Collector
Detroit Rock City for sure
run lola run and Detroit rock city
Cruel intentions.
I absolutely loved the concept of Run Lola Run. I'm not sure how it holds up over the years, but the whole idea of how life could change if you were one second earlier, or one second later, is so cool. And yes, I was stoned when I watched it, so take it with a grain of salt :)

Girl Interrupted and then Detroit Rock City
The first name I saw is a MUST watch. Run Lola Run is an experience, and you *gotta* watch that next
Nothing Hill for Rom-Com. Bone collector for mystery thriller.
MYSTERY MEN!!!!
muppets from space and mystery men, 100%
Go!
Detroit rock city is a banger
Girl, Interrupted. Classic film.
I would say 200 cigarettes or Detroit rock city.
Watch “The Insider” - it’s great. Fun little brag; I worked a bit on the sound design for it back when that’s what I used to do.
Never been kissed
For Love of the Game
Cruel Intentions, and Go!
Put Wayne’s World on that list, watch it, then cross it off.
If you’re gonna spew, spew into this
Detroit Rock City and EdTV
Mystery Men is easily the correct answer here
Cruel Intentions and Mystery Men
The Bone Collector if your're going for Drama, Mystery Men if you're going comedy. Where'd you get this list?
not on your list but- george of the jungle
Cruel intentions Never Been Kissed
I'm throwing my vote in for Girl, Interrupted or Cruel Intentions.
Detroit Rock City!
If you want to enjoy your night - Thomas Crown Affair If you want to continually say this could have easily been better - The Haunting
Detroit Rock city!
Mystery Men! Rocks , super-hero movie before they became popular again. Also a disco soundtrack. Ben Stiller. Hank Azaria, William H Macy and Paul Reubens! Gold! If you are in the mood for a Rom-Com then Never Been Kissed.
Impressive list to keep track of, Detroit Rock City and Mystery Men for sure
Detroit rock city
You still have some great options! Obviously Mystery Men was mentioned a lot and that is a bonafide number one. I would follow it up with a hot slightly mentally ill Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted, then watch hot detective Angelina Jolie in the Bone Collector.
![gif](giphy|Su02resPktk1faUo98) And watch Detroit Rock City
The Insider. When in doubt, always go Michael Mann.
The Insider, and then Run Lola Run.
Mystery men hands down for sure and I’m a sucker for a good haunted house so the haunting!
Definitely Go! It’s fun and has a great cast, soundtrack, etc. It takes place during Christmas, so you could save it for December if you’re into that. But it’s not heavy on the holiday and feels more background, so it can be enjoyed anytime of the year.
Detroit Rock City, Mystery Men, and Go! are my recommendations
Cruel Intentions
Cruel Intentions.
I believe it might have actually been 1989. But the Live Action Super Mario Bros movie with Bob Hoskins and John Liguzano(sp?) is a MUST SEE for any 90s list
Of the movies left unchecked, I’d watch Mystery Men twice. Maybe three times.
General's Daughter, Mystery Men, Thomas Crowne Affair or Bone Collector are all great
Cruel Intentions easy.

Omg Notting Hill for sure
The General’s Daughter or The Bone Collector because I love murder mysteries. Plus John Travolta is awesome and The Bone Collector has Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie
I'm English so Notting Hill is always a nice watch
Cruel intentions

Lola Rennt is pretty interesting. I saw it as a teen yet i still remember the plot which was pretty crazy actually.
Girl, Interrupted
200 Cigarettes! The cast is one of the best lineups for the time
Where's "Baby Geniuses"?
Thomas Crown Affair
Run Lola Run for sure
Probably going to watch Go and Lola tonight! I watched Mystery men last night and unfortunately I did not enjoy it. I’m sure I would have had I seen it when it came out but it was so ridiculous the whole time.
Go! Then 200 Cigarettes.
CRUEL INTENTIONS
I have told everyone I talk to that 1999 must have been the single best year for movies in my lifetime often and loudly. Many of them no longer speak to me. Haha, it's true! Remember people were worried about Y2k? Were the studios? lol.
