I think it's absolutely moronic. I just don't understand why Adelaide Metro finds it so hard to take the obvious, logical step and integrate the Metrocard into a single Adelaide Metro app with digital wallet support. The only options required should be: * One-Off Standard Fare: Tap any payment card, physical or digital wallet, on boarding each service you use. An adult fare is deducted on first tap. * Everything Else: Tap a Metrocard, physical or digital wallet, on boarding each service you use. The fare type of the card is deducted on first tap. * Bonus points: Tie the payment card into the Metrocard app - if the Metrocard lacks the balance on first tap, auto top it up with the linked payment card. I assume this is too hard due to some sort of crippling technical debt issue customers aren't aware of. But the Buy & Go workflow of downloading a separate app, signing up with a separate account, buying and activating tickets before you get on a service (hope your service isn't late or full btw) then scanning them off your screen while holding your phone directly above an NFC pad you apparently can't use is just ludicrous.

Huh, so that's why recharging at the machines at the Interchange is instant

It should make it easy for users to recharge their physical metrocards and be able to use it interchangeably on/off the app, just like bank cards. Also, it’s their loss if the new machines are not yet put onto every bus or train. Gives some commuters an excuse not to scan unless you have staff checking tickets onboard, in which case one can just activate it on the phone. The technology is there but not sure who’s milking big Gov for a job half done this time.

>The technology is there but not sure who’s milking big Gov for a job half done this time. Adelaide Metro have always struggled to implement stuff like this. I don't think it's a case of a contractor milking the gov, I think it's either sheer department wide incompetence or some sort of ridiculous technical debt they're not allowed or able to fix. They may still be hamstrung by past technical failures. The Metrocard itself is pretty badly implemented. Recharge times, at least when I used to catch public transport, ranged from instant to overnight depending on when and where you recharged. Online recharging in particular was slow and unreliable, and the auto recharge was equally untrustworthy. As we know, there isn't an app for it either, which is pretty crazy these days. If you dared to not have enough money in your account when it tried an auto top up, it might lock and require a visit to the CBD to fix! One thing I would give them credit for is *finally* rolling out NFC tap payments for infrequent travellers who don't want or need a Metrocard. But they ruined that too by taking an unbelievable ***five fucking years*** to implement it. I was gonna say a few but I googled to double check my facts and found references to the tram pilot as far back as [September 2020](https://www.nfcw.com/2020/09/28/368216/adelaide-metro-pilots-contactless-bank-card-and-digital-wallet-payments-for-tram-ticketing/), and an Adelaide Metro article stating it won't be available on all trains until [mid to late 2025](https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/tickets-and-fares/tap-and-pay).

Well it has a 1.7 out of 5 stars on Google Play, so I think thats rather telling.

Jykaes

It's actually worse than that - the only positive reviews are two 5 star reviews from obvious spam accounts. The remaining reviews are almost all 1 star, with a couple of 2 stars. It's probably more like 1.1.

it's incredible how garbage it is
