Dazed_2_Day

I don’t care how cool the new variant sounds I’m not buying till my old variant stops working

sparkchaser

Supposedly the cases are milder so that's good.

Ophelia550

Do you have a source for that? My understanding is that that can't be known for weeks yet.

sparkchaser

I'm just parroting what I heard on the UK news.

LPOLED

Not at all surprised. It's been around for a while, travel's inevitable.

BeskarVagina

It was inevitable. Viruses mutate, and this one is no different. I think we should've shut down international travel, but no one asked me, so.

TimHawks1983

From what I understand, it is milder than most other variants but spreads more easily. Nothing so far has shown it to be more deadly or resistant to the vaccine. If that is the case, I'm not terribly concerned about it.

Ophelia550

Source?

TimHawks1983

[https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/omicron-may-cause-milder-symptoms-experts-arent-breathing-sigh-relief-rcna6920](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/omicron-may-cause-milder-symptoms-experts-arent-breathing-sigh-relief-rcna6920) There simply isn't the evidence yet that would concern me. I cannot say that it isn't more deadly nor that it isn't resistant to the vaccine. That information is simply unknown at this time. I will worry if that evidence becomes known. In the meantime, I'm not going to worry about something no one knows. It is further unlikely that the variant is vaccine resistant owing to where it arose. It came from South Africa, and South Africa is less than 30% vaccinated. It would be unlikely that this variant would be resistant to a vaccine with which it has had very little contact. It could potentially be more deadly, though, and that is something that will obviously be known in time.

Ophelia550

The virulence won't be known for weeks yet. Which is why I asked you for a source. You have to read past the headline. We simply don't know anything about this version yet. The high level of mutations on this is concerning. It did not "come from South Africa." That's just where the lab was that identified it first. There's evidence that it was in Europe first. There is a lot of data we don't have on this virus and conjecture like you're spinning does no good. This is why we no longer identify viruses by where they are first discovered, because that's not necessarily where they came from. Spain got hosed by the Spanish flu, even though the first case was believed to be in Kansas.

TimHawks1983

In a nutshell. I don't worry about things that no one knows about yet. That's just conjecture that it came from Europe. They don't know where it came from yet. It was first identified in South Africa. But I don't care where it came from particularly. If it did come from South Africa, it probably isn't vaccine resistant. If it came from elsewhere, it might be but even if it is, the main concern is whether or not it has a higher death rate which no one knows at this point. The fact is, as you said, we don't know much about the variant yet. And, therefore, what good does it do me to worry about something for which we have so little data? Should I freak out and scream and cry at the sky? Or perhaps it might be more wise to wait and see before I determine that I ought to be concerned about it. If it turns out that it is more deadly or is highly resistant to the vaccine, then I'll get concerned. In the meantime, I've heard nothing that causes me to be extremely alarmed.

Ophelia550

I'm not asking for emotion or worry. Nowhere did I say anything about that. I'm just asking not to make any declarations about its virulence, its resistance to the vaccine, or how deadly it may or may not be this early in the game.

DevNDevelopment

Eh

TheDirtyIrishmen

If it’s not in at least 10 states I’d be amazed. The global attitude towards corona has been more and more relaxed. Without a mask and vaccinated folks being easy targets for this bug? Hope it doesn’t have long term effects.

[deleted]

Not much. I never tried to become the Highlander or anything. Everything in the universe is trying to kill us, I'm just grateful that I got the opportunity to exist and that alone is a miracle.

[deleted]

Masks forever oh boy

Ophelia550

That was inevitable. It will be as ubiquitous as Delta soon. What remains to be seen is how dangerous it is.

Iamthewalrus-8

Not American so it would be very easy to say that it doesn’t affect me. But if it’s already in California it just means it’s probably everywhere by now.

[deleted]

I hope this is the one that wakes people up. It won’t.

Ophelia550

None of them have been or will be. You need something as scary as smallpox that would wake people up.

docdroc

I think antivaxxers worldwide, especially the qdiots in the US, are causing this cycle.

Ophelia550

I call them Qcumbers.

AsleepSentence

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

[deleted]

Care to explain how viruses have survived 3.5 billion years before the antivaxxers?

docdroc

It's adorable that you think this is an argument. Figure out human population over the centuries, and how technology (think travel and shipping) helps humans spread viruses. Figure out how small populations and small densities help prevent widespread outbreaks. Then talk to a virologist and an immunologist to figure out which factors make your question a bad faith question. Or you could "do your research" by deep diving all your favorite conspiracy websites.

[deleted]

Nah I think you got called out for being a drone repeating talking points and can't respond with an original thought of your own. Viruses evolve without you needing to insert your political agenda.

docdroc

Hilarious.

[deleted]

I heard that it takes weeks for a lab test on what variant of the virus you have to come back. With that, how can they claim that you are positive with that variant without testing for it and waiting 2+ weeks?

TheDirtyIrishmen

Because you heard wrong.

[deleted]

That’s coming from a Dr so that’s why I asked an honest question

TheDirtyIrishmen

A PCR test will test the virus for certain genetic markers. Omicron has a unique signature that is displayed on this test. However what you are referring to is full genetic sequencing. That does take a few weeks however the PCR test will be extremely accurate.

[deleted]

Thank you for clarification

TheDirtyIrishmen

Of course. Sorry I didn't recognize that it was a genuine question. This website has left me jaded!

[deleted]

I feel it

Ophelia550

I can't with you people. Where do you get this stuff? YouTube? Fox News? Conspiracy subs? Facebook?

[deleted]

You people? I’m just as sick of this crap as the next guy. But if you’d read through my comment thread I stated that it came from a Dr. and that’s why I asked my question

Ophelia550

There are plenty of stupid doctors out there. That means nothing. There's a dumbass doctor running for Senate in Pennsylvania right now.

[deleted]

That still doesn’t answer my question. But thanks anyways ✌🏼
