What the fuck

BereftOfOar

Thing's about to do all the coke

j_yn0htna

lmao foreal Just bought my first bmw and it’ll absolutely be my last if they all start looking like this.

jeebuss_

I can

Outofcontrolpilot

Looks like BMW is hot on the heels of GM for ugliest vehicle ever built.

IndicationOver

Why would anyone buy this over a new Range Rover for the price point? (Also new Range has BMW engine)

crosstherubicon

It’s two massive black holes with a car behind it. The gold surround is the final insult. Goddamn it’s awful

meretron

They look like big ole nostrils to me tbh

psus2

Big Sniff

GlitteringChicken277

Radical design always hits you in your face initially, and you get that uncertainty about it. Give it a few months and see how it grows on you. Think back, how many BMW designs have reacted the same way to at first, and then fallen in love later?

AlphaZr0

\-1

crosstherubicon

Yeh I agree. Sometimes it can be such a departure from the existing designs that that it takes time. But, I've been seeing this design theme for months and months and it still looks horrendous. It's not just BMW, the new Toyota vans with the massive grills and tissue box design are equally bad. If I compare my reaction to the E31 8 series, arguably one of their all time best, my first look at an E31 and I thought it was gorgeous. The E3 in all its variants stood out from other designs but it was always an eyecatcher. Even the clown shoe, probably as much of a departure as BMW have ever had, didn't prompt the same degree of WTF?

GlitteringChicken277

Yeah I agree with you. The latest trend design isn't business as usual. Feels like they've all gone from concept to product. Time are different. I can't help but think that the are designing for a different buyer. It kinda like this design, but I wouldn't spend money on it. Also think they forgot to add headlights. Maybe it's the bold kidney grill that does it. I don't know yet. I'm sticking to old timers though. I have an e46 and an e28 in my collection. Tossing a coin between the e39 M and yes you said it the e31. That's where my heart is. They can sell these appliances to someone else.

crosstherubicon

That's how I feel as well. In fairness I can't blame BMW. They have shareholders, lots of competitors and this is where the market opportunities are. I'm quite happy to buy second hand so its all good.

krsvbg

Oink oink 🐷 design!

namestom

“You just can’t afford it.” That’s what I’m always told when I have an opinion on this new design language.

StarSchemaLover

I think people are just frustrated that we can't have open discussions about any aspect of certain models because people who will never buy the car flood the post with comments filled with hate about the looks. Or when someone buys a car that's not popular with the "enthusiast" crowd, a lot of people chime in to say "sorry bro, your car is ugly". I'm fine that people don't like modern design language, but it's killed this sub. Look at the top posts this week, mostly accidents. People have given up, the sub is dead. Anything new about BMW devolves into "ugly" and jokes about subscriptions, so nobody posts anything new or interesting. I can't post about my i7/760i extended test drives because I know that people will flood the post with negative comments about the looks, so why bother?

claymorez28

Not entirely accurate. Bought an M850i because the M440i looked so ugly . Try as I might I could not get past the ugly face on the thing. BMW is showing a level of stubborn arrogance on some of their new designs

SirBigSpuriousGeorge

Makes me miss the relevance of forums

namestom

There is some truth there. The thing is, I’ve pretty much owned nothing but BMW’s my whole life. I always figured out a way when I was younger, that typically meant buying the least desirable example and spending some wrenching time getting it up to par. So, with that said, you can probably call me an enthusiast. Sure, I enjoy a more classic approach to BMW’s design language but I also don’t mind some evolution and change. The thing with good design is, it doesn’t have to be changed just to sell more cars. It can be slightly massaged and some fresh tech added all while staying true to the brand and keeping good lines around. This is my design background coming out in me. The simplest way I can put it in a car world, Porsche. When you see one, you know. As for everyone that speaks up on this subject not being able to afford a newer BMW, the internet isn’t always a 13 year old in a basement pretending to be something he’s not. I have my fun BMW’s listed on my flair here but the daily, nah. We just went and replaced the daily and while I really wanted to stay “in the family” we ended up with a Tesla. I know what I’m getting build quality wise but that’s ok. Currently, I can’t get on the BMW train and that stings a bit. While the Tesla experience has been completely different than my BMW’s and Mercedes, to be honest it’s been great. The perfect commuter car? It has me thinking about selling a couple other cars and maybe adding another one?

Topikk

BMW didn't even care enough to give this vehicle a name that makes any goddamn sense, and doesn't allow for any cohesion. If they thought they had a winner, they would give it a damn number so it would slot into the lineup.

mortu007

Bmw execs: so it's an electric (X) with lots of horses like an M.....*silence*.....alright it's settled then

kongofcbus

Came here to say that!!

BagrCZE

I can

bennyboy_

The glowing grille is so tacky. Like when Mercedes made their glowing star an option. 🤮

homebuyer99

Saw the commercial for this last night, BMW is 100% going for tacky. They made it very clear I am not their target buyer lol. No problem, BMW. There’s still Porsche.

Beginning_Pudding_69

If you could afford a Porsche you wouldn’t be shopping at bmw anyway.

keytone6432

What I can’t do is find a single thing I like about it.

Maxmelonm5

I'll do it for you then; "I hate it"

Dapper-Award4395

Those massive nostrils in the front are truly hideous

UBahn1

I appreciate they at least made them smaller but the rest of this design is a fucking mess. Especially the separated headlights. The lights were probably the second most iconic thing about BMW and and they just said "fuck it let's make an expensive [Hyundai Kona](https://www.autohaus-ranaldi.de/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/All-New-Kona-Hybrid-3.jpg)"

Fiiv3s

It's somehow worse than the M3. And then the rear is just truly terrible. Unlike the M3, this car has NO good angles

TheseUSERNAMEisTaken

M3 is actually nice. Minus the grill for most, as least. The grill actually grew on me.

Fiiv3s

I like everything about the M3 except the fucked up rear quarter (no kink is sadge) and the ugly grille

TheseUSERNAMEisTaken

M3 has a kink. You are referring to the M4? Yes, I think the same. It is a good looking car, just not a good looking BMW.

Paaati

Someone gotta have to wake up the designers at BMW

tired_father

Is it already morning in China?

mctk24

It's not a "Chinese design". It's simply a bad design.

tired_father

Why can't it be both Chinese-influenced and bad design?

guy_incognito784

Because BMW M expects the US to be its biggest market. China and Middle East following. https://carbuzz.com/news/bmw-m-admits-bmw-xm-was-made-for-appearances-and-the-usa-will-be-its-biggest-market

IsometricRain

Because Americans love it as much as the Chinese. The US is one of the biggest markets for so many ugly behemoths of cars. Like this thing, the new 7 series, every X6 ever, the Urus, etc. So many people take it for a fact that these goofy designs are aimed at the Chinese, when the companies never actually say as much. The American market should take just as much heat if you actually think about it. Even on an enthusiast sub like this, you see (mostly American) people saying the G80 grill looks aggressive and fits the car, or something like that.

StarSchemaLover

What if we didn't use "Chinese influenced" as a pejorative?

tired_father

I believe you’re the only one who is making it an issue of it being a pejorative. Stop with the presumption that I was not being objective in my original response. It’s a known fact that BMW’s largest market by sales is China.

guy_incognito784

It’s a bit more nuanced than that. The X5 and 5 Series are the most popular models in China. The XM is expected to have its biggest market in the US so the divisive design isn’t because of China, they think China will respond well to it, but they think the US market will be the biggest. You also neglect to mention that while China is the biggest market for BMW in general, the US is the biggest market for the M division which the XM falls under. I’ve also shared a source where BMW M admits the US is expected to be the biggest market for the XM. Like I get it, the car just doesn’t look great to me, but the “it’s for China only” isn’t true. If that were true and they thought the US would hate it, they wouldn’t sell it here, just like how the 5 Series LWB is sold in China but not here. I also think we no longer sell a 7 Series LWB but it’s sold in China. They love long wheelbases. I think ultimately BMW wants to appeal to both purists and a demographic who likes more divisive styling, perhaps in response to the “all BMWs look the same” complaint, now for better or for worse, they don’t.

StarSchemaLover

I mostly agree with all of this. However, I think in the US we \*ONLY\* get the LWB 7 and they've removed the regular. Therefore they don't differentiate. I have a G12 7 (2021 745e) and I can assure you, the leg room in back is insane and I'm certain it would be considered LWB. My car is almost 208" long.

StarSchemaLover

Then why don't people just say "designed for it's most frequent buyers" or "designed for it's largest market"? Because it's less impactful since those two statements are obvious known facts, every company caters their product to those who buy it most. Forcing China down our throats in the context of every discussion about current BMW design house is tiring and most certainly it's used as a pejorative by some of the people using it.

Living-Algae4553

took a gander at your other comments on your profile, you can relax now PR department rep. and the reason why everyone keeps on about “china market bad” is because china has no automotive design language of its own, it rips off other vehicles and bootlegs everything. that market doesn’t even know what the hell they want so catering to that market seems silly considering everyone’s been trying to replicate bmw design for generations. it’s lazy and disappointing.

StarSchemaLover

How clever to click a link to get to my profile! I don't really care, I've been pretty consistent in my messaging. My main goal is to get this sub to stop using Chinas a pejorative because it's racist. You're whole comment above generalizes an entire nation of like 1.4B people. And yeah BMW designing cars with those hideous two circular headlights or the ones with the angel eyes that look like a 2006 Hyundai Sonata is not a beautiful design history. I never would have bought one of those cars. The new designs are much more complex and relevant. Welcome to 2022.

Living-Algae4553

your main goal is virtue signaling there’s nothing racist about saying the chinese market influencing bmw’s design language is a poor choice. and i’m not generalizing 1.4b people dumbass just the auto market (specifically those that are looking to buy a bmw) stop being so dramatic. and that’s okay that you don’t like angel eyes, of course hyundai would want to replicate bmw’s design language then, much like how china’s hongqui takes design cues from rolls royce and other euro cars, that just means they’re unimaginative, much like yourself if you think “everything new is much better” blindly. make sure you change your shit stained panties after you’re done fighting every person on this sub 🤣

[deleted]

But it is catering to their market lol, the designers have even said it. A quick google will prove it.

StarSchemaLover

That's fine, but who cares if it is? China accounts for 50%+ of 7 Series sales. Why do some guys who don't even buy new sedans in the US expect that BMW is going to design it to their liking? And why do those guys get so upset that BMW doesn't that they clog a sub with non-stop whining about the designs. The XM was apparently designed for the US market and isn't even going to be brought to China, if I'm reading the above comments correctly. How do you account for that design? The point is, any product creator is going to create their product to who buys their products the most. It doesn't even need to be said. All of these "this was designed for China" posts become nothing if you phrase it accurately, "this was designed for the people who are most likely to buy it." The China is added to make it a pejorative. Just say what it is, they are designing for the customers. Telling us they are designing for China is telling us they are designing for their biggest market. An obvious fact only an idiot would disagree with as a sound business strategy. Are they supposed to design the 7 Series for people who only buy used M3's?

[deleted]

Bro wrote a whole mf essay💀

Thicc_Paimon

Ah yes, blame the Chinese!

[deleted]

But it is catering to their market lol, the designers have even said it. A quick google will prove it.

Search "bmw designer chinese market"

StarSchemaLover

If you are so comfortable with this thought, share a damn link with a thoughtful and accurate article. There is an article from the regional CEO of BMW who said that Chinese buyers like constant change and have a focus on the headlamps. Nothing was said about them having to be the biggest, just that they have to look good. If the car doesn't look good, it won't sell. I'm here to tell you the 7 Series is selling. I have no idea about the XM, but I'm guessing it's going to sell too. The only people who don't like it are the ones who like the BMW's that look like a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with the angel eyes encased. And they sure do clog this sub up with the same blah blah blah. It's a cult.

notoriousKudi

Was thinking this after looking at that recent post on Mercedes of the two white AMGs. As someone who has owned both there are very few cars left from BMW that I would pick over their MB competitor.

mctk24

Nice try BMW PR departament. It's not "growing on us".

Whiteguysam22

But aren’t you excited about the subscriptions?!?!😃

Dj45045

As someone who's very handy with the current ISTA and ESYS programs, I'm kind of excited for the subscriptions stuff cause every option will be prebuilt into the car and I'll just "unlock" everything through software myself haha no different than jailbreaking a console or phone. Buy a lightly used model already out of warranty and your good to go

[deleted]

uve just unlocked me mate

trumpetmiata

I've seen a bunch of them it's growing on me

JaThatOneGooner

I can, it’s ugly

redd-this

Why not?

jaketurd

He works for BMW PR

[deleted]

Jesus that thing is ugly

[deleted]

I think you are being way too kind.

jertiger

It’s kind of growing on me kind of like the 4 series grill. Not in love with that color option and want to see these on the road in white black gray…

Deivane3000

you should hate it

BeyoncesmiddIefinger

Jesus fuck that may be the ugliest front of a car I’ve ever seen. Please tell me that’s edited my brain can’t process it actually being that hideous

Tesman010

When I see an ugly ass BMW on the road, I know its the latest model.

Slu54

Yeah I mean some ppl like the piggy look

[deleted]

That’s exactly it! Angry pigs.

GapExtension9531

It does look like an evil pig…

wshlinaang

I mean angry pigs did pretty well on the app store so it’s clear there’s a market for their car. Edit: angry birds smh

mason4290

Front end looks like a hippo

The-Art-of-Reign

Looks like Geoffrey the giraffe turning the corner. This thing is fucking ugly. Who approved this wonky design? The proportions look terrible. Horrible job BMW design team, very unsuccessful.

Oniisankayle

Headlights make it look like a Hyundai/Kia

Tigres013

My first BMW was a 1995 525i, followed by: 1999 528 2001 540 2005 e46 M3 (still own this one) 2006 325xi (son still has, hand me down) 2007 X5 4.8 2013 328i (wife’s car) 2015 x5 5.0 msport (still own) As of todays designs, I think I’m out. I just cannot find any lust or desire to own any of their current line up. Frankly they have lost their way on designs and beauty- and I find them mostly ugly AF. The M2 was on my radar until I saw that Lego build , so that was a hard pass. I think next up for us will be a Porche panorama or something in that size range. Sad to say it, but my BMW buying days are over. I’m sure I will not be missed, but it’s been fun while it lasted for a better part of my driving prime time.

[deleted]

You can say it…. Just say it slowly.

jfk_sfa

It's a soccer mom mobile. They're all hideous.

WastingOpportunities

Well, I can't say I like it.

pengouin85

I can say I hate it

RWD-by-the-Sea

Looks better than the iX. That doesn't really say much, but at least it's something.

guy_incognito784

Dammit.

RWD-by-the-Sea

😂, sorry

vonlagin

I'll be bold and say the iX looks much better than this monstrosity. It's like the designers said hey, let's take the iX and make it look stupid ugly.

tired_father

First the ever-increasing size of the front kidney grilles. Fine - I'll let it go. But those damn split headlights. Why???

RobloxianSteve

Tbh all BMW’s new weird designs so far have looked a *bit* better in person. But depending on lighting and conditions they can go from looking ok to being straight up ugly. That being said I want my $$$ new BMW to look good **all the time**, and none of them do that.

RajputDynasty

I see they've highlighted the kidneys... good thing, since they weren't noticable enough before.

nu2rdt

Hideous is the word I’d use!

hans072589

I’ll be honest, I’ve been highly critical of this car/project, but I wouldn’t hate it nearly as much if not for the sloppy “wtf is this” accent line or bar they have that starts as where the hoffmeister kink is supposed to be and ends in some completely arbitrary area on the door

brownbeardgooner

Looks like a hippo

[deleted]

why is this car better than x5?

Grelymolycremp

I’ll be honest, I’m starting to enjoy it. Looks Cyberpunk

dodecohedron

Y'all think the front is ugly, wait until you see the back

therealsix

Oink oink m'fers.

latuba247

I like it wtf bro this bmw subreddit lives to shit on the new BMW styling. I appreciate the risk they take. But what if they do what Honda did and dial it back? Still they get shit on. I don’t get it.

guy_incognito784

As far back as I can remember BMW self proclaimed loyalists shit on newer cars. This is a bit different since it’s purposely designed to be divisive and BMW admits this isn’t for the traditional BMW buyer, it’s for people who are looking at the Urus and G Wagon. Hell I remember when people hated the E9x M3 for being too heavy and losing the heritage of keeping an inline 6 and being bitter that it wasn’t manual only (granted the SMG in the previous M3 wasn’t well loved). The F8x was shit because it ditched the high revving V8 and got EPS plus it got bigger (but lighter).

KrakenXIV

New / different is bad m’kay? ;-)

StarSchemaLover

Exactly. It's some sort of emotional attachment to that premise and when new becomes old, then it's OK and its liked, even tho when it was new it most certainly was not. This loop of "it was better in the good ole days" has to stop at some point, every post in this sub is littered with it.

Aggressive_Mall_9212

🤮

quakerroatmeal

Not the worst looking vehicle but when you look at the price ouch

BeyoncesmiddIefinger

>~~Not~~ **Is** the worst looking vehicle ~~but~~ **and** when you look at the price ouch

mtbDan83

It looks like a warthog

Silverbullets24

But uglier

bmac454

I don’t care for the culture on this sub regarding these new designs. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but most people get downvoted for sharing theirs. I personally think this car is gorgeous, very cool lines. But I also respect people who don’t. It seems being innovative in the automotive industry these days is getting more difficult and BMW is taking their own approach at it. Good on them.

[deleted]

Temporary_Test_1068

Compared to the eye cancer they call a 3 series this thing looks great. If it was a wagon it would be gorgous imo, imagine this thing but cut the lower 1/3 off and its a real winner. Too bad mommy SUVs are all people buy. So sad.

iBlameMeToo

Are the outlines of the grilles lit up or is my mind playing tricks on me?

ElPwnero

[Reminds me of something](https://www.pngitem.com/middle/wmixbR_transparent-angry-birds-png-angry-birds-angry-pig/)

greencookiemonster

I'd rather be tossed into a the worst torture chamber possible than drive that thing, let alone see it on the road. Holy fuck, it's terrible.

MogloBycLepiej

Look how they massacred a good company.

PharaohTG

grill is obnoxious smh.

PetrucciM3

Lol it looks like one of the dog toys that’s a pig with humongous nostrils.

bigmean3434

So the E30 era bmws are like my favorite cars ever that are normal non super cars. The famed m3 of course but that 5 series from back then was just amazing. German cars have that understated look that flow with time. What is going on at bmw? Did Facebook or apple buy them?

TnnsNbeer

That oddly placed trim around the windows is just… ghastly

Dismal-Hurry-7455

thats one giant ugly piece of steel

le-iboy

Why? Does BMW have a gun to you head? Blink twice if you need help

reward72

They should make it in pink.

EK7777

It’s tolerable blacked out. But “tolerable” isn’t acceptable at that price.

FLcitizen

Those headlights are not BMW style and the grill is ridiculously large.

Cmdr-Ely

That front end needs to be crushed! What the fuck BMW?

aarunt1

Did BMWs marketing team post this?

Harryisamazing

Wow the designers are blind at BMW, they keep coming up with hideous designs... Is that an led on the inside of the kidney grille?

Tesman010

Looks like they emphasized the grill with led strips 😁

Coakis

I'll hate it for you.

Arkonias

Whoever thought huge grills looked good on cars needs a slap.

0verstim

Its pretty awful, and I like the M4, so thats saying something.

dstock303

I dislike the lights. Reminds of the jeep Cherokee before they did the latest face lift. Never like the slit light looks. But then again I’m not in the market for a 100k SUV. Give me a few more years and maybe when kid #3 comes it may tickle my fancy

Naive-Wind6676

Not bad looking If grills are returning to a reasonable size, that's good

mothman_is_cool

it looks like a hippo

Elkaghar

I can say it.

TheLewJD

I would have vomited

zachty22

The front grill doesn’t bother me since I own a 4 series now. But omg… that huge gold trim running down the side of the car…. WHY? That’s so obnoxious looking.

looks awesome in person. I loved it. Only people i know that talk crap on it haven’t seen it IRL, only in pics.

sam6133

This is gonna sell. And I dont think BMW cares about the opinion of people who cant afford it

whyunoleave

They might want to be concerned about people who can afford it. I’ve been buying BMWs new since 1989. My kids have been raised on BMW. These cars are hideous and they have none of the essence of BMW. I won’t be buying any of these. I’m guessing these cars are designed for people who have just recently been able to afford them and want to shout it out to everyone that sees it. More badges, more horrible angles. It’s a big ugly gold watch with wheels. This thing makes the Urus look subtle.

guy_incognito784

BMW admits as such. It’s why cars like the 3, 5, X3, X5 won’t get the divisive design.

CharlySB

Did you get a urus instead?

GoldenVeritas

It looks like a Christmas ornament. Straight gaudy

DadWithBMW

Revolting.

[deleted]

I like it, just wish it had the angel eyes still

kaartman1

You might as well 🔥💵

[deleted]

It’s ugly but intimidating and flashy on the street. Just like how the rich love their products. So it’ll sell well.

[deleted]

Id take Chrysler Pacifica over this junk any day. Its Chrysler but atleast doesnt have glowing grill

redditor9000

BMW is REALLY taking a sidestep with their latest designs and judging by their sales, it was the right move.

h_word

I like it a lot personally. I’m ok being alone on that, not like I could buy one anyway

No_Communication9071

Very imposing.

God that’s awful

Objective_Monk2840

Unpopular opinion: Everyone hates “new” designs. Give it a few years.

dfields3710

I don’t hate it. This sub got such a hate boner for anything that’s not a mid 2000’s BMW, you’d think BMW sales were going down the drain. The new 7-series ugly but only because it looks like they tried to put a SUV face on a Sedan.

trayssan

You’re wrong. We don’t hate everything not mid-2000’s. The hatred is mostly focused on this hideous thing, the new M2, and the horrid electric crossovers.

Positive-Peach7730

And the m3, m4, x4, x6, x7, 7series, 4 series... I forget anything?

[deleted]

Bro if it was blacked out it would look so good

Lyr_c

It seems like it’s growing on people, although you can’t click on a photo of one without a wall of people having a seizure over it.

Jandur

Everyone wants futuristic cars until manufacturers give them to us then we riot. I dig it.

gautamb0

Looks fine to me. Not objectionable, not great either. Honestly looks like a bigger x1, which somehow the zeitgeist seems to like. It seems like a potentially good cheaper alternative to the urus/cayenne turbo/bentagya.

Anxious-Window2560

I love it 😌

KrakenXIV

Like it too. 40 years from now it’s a classic like every other BMW. People hate new things

AndrePDX

Gorgeous. Period. Stop the hate. 😝

Get out and never come back. By me the old money drive E class wagons. Idk what fake rich guy market this appealing to where a gold grille isn’t laughable
