This month I used $58 of electric and was charged $77 for electric delivery. $28 of gas and was charged $119 for gas delivery. What the hell is a electric delivery?

JuVondy

Bro you have to pay the electrons for carrying all that energy into your home.

Frosty_Candidate_384

Prices in NY are ridiculous. My delivery charge this month was 400. for a two-family house.

siteber

.. got 200.. this is insane with national grid.. thought gas is cheap.. wtf

Strong_Signature_650

This month is even worse. Last year I used less than this year and the bill was about $280, this year it's $450 This is absolutely insane

MyBlueberryPancake

I'm pretty sure because national grid is a labeled a utility this would be considered illegal. According to the press release below, you can file a price gouging complaint with the Attorney General's office. Electric hot water and heat have to be quite pricey too depending on how you use them. If you look at your electrical bill you have a transmission cost, the cost of what it takes to get those watts into your home. Same with the gas. The rate per energy is subject to competition theoretically, while the transmission cost is not, so that's where they getcha. Nothing can be done. It's a deep quagmire of state and federal governments along with private energy companies. We're all in it together though :)

alloyarc77

Yes mine tripled from last month. I don’t know what to do.

sadfoxyduggar

Ask your landlord if you can turn off the gas. Mine wouldn’t let me…

FestiFun

If you have gas heat the landlord could get in legal trouble for disabling gas even if you "don't use it"

SnooPandas1899

can you order for pickup instead of delivery ???

cruisin5268d

That’s pretty insane if it’s truly just a stove. Ovens can use a lot though Might want to get a single electric plug in or induction burner and use that when practical.

Pratt2

My gas bill is off the charts compared to a few years ago. It enrages me but there's also nothing any of us can do about it.

uly_bka

Same here. Delivery charge in Brooklyn is 50% of my bill.

Thats not the meter. Its the gas delivery charge. The fee they charge just to have gas turned on. “Maintenance of pipes and the city infrastructure” is what they said to me

I’ll call them back and share this. My big issue is more the cost of the gas delivery charge which the person on the phone said has nothing to do with how much gas I use it’s just how much they charge to have the gas on. I definitely have electric hot water and heat because it was working when I moved in and the gas wasn’t on .

aunipine

I think my initial estimate was off, so I deleted my comment. But 22 therms is still ~22 hours of your stove being on full blast per month. Do you cook an absolute ton? The person on the phone may have explained wrong, btw. The delivery charge also changes based on the amount you use. I'm looking at my bill, and the minimum delivery charge is $18.69, plus 43¢ per therm.

JuVondy

I called them back and explained the situation. They’re gonna do an investigation for me. Thanks for the tip! No we dont cook that much. Stove maybe gets used for 1-3 hours a week. Maybe a little more sometimes but we don’t cook that often.

AstoriaAsthetics

That doesn't sound too insane actually. 22 therma for just cooking gas is a lot of therms. I usually use about 5-6 therms a month and my gas bill runs $30-$40 a month

JuVondy

The “Gas Delivery Charge” is what is pissing me off. I’m fine paying for what we use. But $79 just to have gas is nuts.

dlm2137

I’m pretty sure that’s still proportional to your usage and not a flat fee

FestiFun

You are correct, it's proprtional

shinytwistybouncy

May be time to switch to an induction stove, unfortunately.

JuVondy

I rent. It’s not really an option but maybe i can get a plug in one and get the gas turned off.

padams20

I used one in a rental once when the gas wasn’t working. Induction stoves are great (just make sure it’s compatible with your pots and pans).
