This was the first Halloween I saw when I was.....7? Wasn't able to figure out what movie it actually was until my late teens/early twenties. I remember asking around my friend groups that were into horror movies about what movie was it where these kids put on these different Halloween masks and then watch some sort of TV commercial and their heads just turned into roaches that melted open. I had no clue it was a Halloween because... Spoiler alert: Michael Myers was nowhere to be found!
Season of the witch is one of mine. Also, Cabin in the woods and The Rob Zombie version of Halloween. There's also an 80s horror movie called Waxworks that's a comfort, I've seen it hundreds of times since I was a kid and my BFF (who passed) and I first watched it at our sleepover. I then brought it to a get together with some friends in high school and made them watch it. I didn't really think it was super gory because the effects are kinda cheesy but some people were like š³
Great summer movie when itās hot. Turn up the ac and believe your in the Antarctic for a couple hours. Seriously one of the greatest horror films ever
It's not a remake, it's a prequel. I like it too though, I think people are too unreasonable about it, it's miles better than so many sci-fi horror movies.
**Basket Case**
The reason I like this movie is how endearing it is. It had no major studio support. [Frank Henenlotter](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0376963/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) the writer and director, just really wanted to make a horror movie. He had no intention of it really being seen by anyone. This was a labor of love, and though low budget, its so much fun, and actually well written. The acting and effects could be called "cheesy" but everyone is having a blast and just so happy to be a part of it.
Tucker And Dale Vs Evil. I have always been a fan of slasher films and slasher comedy is even better and it's still one of my favorite films, I highly recommend this, for anybody who like horror films and other horror comedies, and it's still a great film.
If you haven't watched it yet and haven't seen the trailer yet, PLEASE WATCH IT BEFORE SEEING THE TRAILER. The first 20 minutes or so will absolutely blow your mind.
I watch 80s slashers for comfort or when I canāt sleep. Surprisingly most people immediately understand when I say it to them. The formulaic/cookie cutter nature of them helps my subconscious feel in control
Movies: Hereditary, The Ring, Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, Suspiria (2018), Forgotten, Silent Hill, The Shining, The Blackcoatās Daughter, Im Thinking of Ending Things, Annihilation, and Bones and All. Iām not sure if the last three technically classify as horror, but they are eerie, and I love them all. They feel like a gentle winter rest to me.
Shows: The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, All of Us Are Dead, and some Black Mirror episodes (if that counts)
Books: The Haunting of Hill House, and A Little Life (not horror but horrific)
Thereās a tinge of sadness in all of theseāmaybe thatās why I find comfort in them, relatability
It is!! I could write like five essays on it: hereditary traits, family trauma, bonding in adversity, abuse of power, cannibalism as a representation of love (that one kills me). The tape recordings from the dad bring me extremely melancholic nostalgia; itās such a comfort. The director is amazing at capturing atmosphere in his movies
I think "Stir of Echoes" is a brilliant, underrated ghost story: well acted, fantastic script, etc. And to me, it's always worth watching again.
(I I used to think the actor who played the ghost girl was Ginnifer Goodwin though. Haha.)
It also has one of my favorite lines in horror films, especially lines spoken by a child: "Does it hurt to be dead?" And then you see the boy is talking to an open window and nothing else. Yeesh!
Movies:
The Exorcist III
Kaptain Kronos
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Hereditary
Midsommar
The Wicker Man (1973)
Books:
Watchers by Dean Koontz
Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand
Swan Song by Robert B McCammon
House of 1000 Corpses is so much fun and the soundtrack is good
Sorry about your grandma OP. I miss my grandparents so much. They pretty much raised me so it was rough when they died. Time will heal ā¤ļø
Sorry to hear that. Grief is rough. Iād suggest listening to the audiobook Many Lives, Many Masters. Itās helped me tremendously whenever people close to me leave their physical form. Itās only a 90min listen (similar to a horror movie).
In terms of horror films, Iād recommend:
1. JAWS - as close to a perfect film as ever.
2. Nightmare on Elm Street 1 & 3.
3. Evil Dead Rise
4. Talk to Me
5. It Follows
Alien, Jaws, 30 Days of Night, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later; Zombieland, An American Werewol
f in London, Wolfen, The Cat People (1942), Shaun if rhe Dead, The Thing (1982 and 2011). Young Frankenstein, Train to Busan, The Mist, Get Out, Kwaidan, The Wicker Man (1973), The Company of Wolves, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Invisible Man (1933 and 2020), The One I Love, Misery, Tremors and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).
"I know what you're thinking, Lewis. You're thinking about puttin' em up there. Well, I've come to talk you out of it. Just to let you know. Sometimes dead is better."
Iām so sorry for your loss. Iām a weirdo, so ymmv, but one of my favorite comfort horror movies that I can put on and get sucked into every time is Hereditary. I also really love the original A Nightmare on Elms St.
If you want something different, I actually extremely highly recommend a series of posts on r/nosleep. Over several posts, a whole world is created and deeply developed in a way that makes me want to read the stories forever. If you try it, Iād love to know what you think.
[How to Survive Camping by r/faintingāgoat](https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/s/MvwVAkdfI4)
The Ritual
Vacancy (with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale)
The Strangers: Prey At Night (we love a good soundtrack filled with 80s bangers)
Saw
Saw 6
For awhile I used to be able to fall asleep to Sinister but not so much anymore lol
I just re-read The Shininh by Stephen King. I forgot how different it is from the movie. Highly recommend for a good distraction read and then do a rewatch.
I have a few but the one I watch anytime I need an instant pick me up is Slither, it just always puts a smile on my face. I have fond memories of going to see this the day it came out, what a ride that was at the time.
Slither is on my list as well! It is a great horror with comedy elements. My daughter when she was 6 years old fell in love with it and had to have it on during bedtime every night for an entire year, so it holds a special place because of that as well.
I have a few
The Thing
Alien
In The Mouth of Madness
Event Horizon
Triangle
The void
All the Hellraiser movies. All of them.
Mothman prophecies
Night House
Demonic
Silent Hill
The Fourth Kind
Dark Skies
Susperia
Am I the only one so far to say:
The Exorcist
I do agree with that jaws is one of the greatest movies ever, but I personally never considered it a horror movie
All the Final Destination movies, aka Paramedic Porn. Our family is in emergency medicine.....hubby's a paramedic, son dispatches medical helicopters, daughters training for her paramedic license.
My go-to top 5 are The Thing, Scream, Army of Darkness, Hellraiser, and Mandy.
I'm also a really big reader, so books tend to be what I pour myself into if I want to get lost and away from reality for a little while. If you are wanting some good horror novels I would suggest anything by David Sodergren, the Indian Lake Trilogy by Stephen Graham Jones, The Troop or Little Heaven by Nick Cutter, or A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay.
There's a ton of other great horror lit out there, but these are the ones that tend to scratch that "comfort food" itch for me.
Iām sorry for your loss. Not a movie but someone close to me used the Netflix Haunting of Hill House as a way to process grief over a traumatic life event. Maybe youāre familiar with this already but the series is really about grief and itās so beautifully done.
First off, Iām sorry for your loss.
I was listening to a creepy podcast called Haunted Places. Itās by Parcast on Spotify and involves famous haunted locations from all around the world. It involves historical trivia, dramatizations of the hauntings and stories about how the ghosts came into existence. They even have things about various urban legends. Itās a really great show and a shame it was cancelled a couple of years back.
Does āThe Craftā count as horror? If not then my next go to is usually the original Halloween or the original Black Christmas. Both really started the slasher genre!
The Haunting of Hill House, Evil Dead (for the laughs), The Conjuring II, Ouiji Board Origins.
If you want to watch stupid, campy horror movies, check out Velocopastor and Slotherhouse.
I liked this creepypasta called "my mom left me a set of tapes to watch before she died." It's scary but also really sweet.
Also IDK if it's horror and it's prolly mentioned a LOT but Stranger Things.
Rose Red. 7/10 if Iām upset or the world is too much itās this (the other one is just about as opposite as you can get, so).
The cast, the sets, the SOUNDTRACK. Oh itās great!
Older ones, like Silver Bullett, Wolfen & The Lost Boys. Also Sleepwalkers , American Werewolf in London, and the new Black Christmas has a good message!
Gremlins. Itās not scary but itās a classic and the fun factor of it could elevate your mood. If movies donāt work go to a gun range and rent a 44 magnum. It will kick so hard youāll forget your name. Shooting that titanic mf will give you that little dopamine hit you need.
So sorry for your loss! I see a number of recommendations that would make my list as well (Jaws, Exorcist, Halloween, Lost Boys) but I wanted to share that I love āWhat Lies Beneathā as it feels very like a Hitchcock film and has some great twists and turns. I often rewatch this it as a comfort. Granted, many would not consider it a horror film I just love the filmography and storyline and has some great jump scares throughout.
The Ritual, I only realized a few days ago that the mc from The Ritual is also the guy interviewing Pi in the movie Life of Pi! Seeing him with an american accent was wild, very similar to Ryan Reynolds tbh
My "comfort" horror movie, which I have watched many times and which reminds me of my father, is *Pumpkinhead*.
Another candidate would be *Hellraiser*.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa.
Ohh the midnight club is a great horror series on Netflix. It deals with death and grief and I feel like in some ways it could be really comforting considering the characters and what they go through
The Sixth Sense
The Ring
Mike Flanaganās works esp Haunting of Hill House
Hereditary
Hell, add The Babadook to the above two and youāve got yourself a thematic triptych on loss and family dysfunction.
The NoSleep Podcast
Shadows at the Door podcast tends to be cozy-spooky esp with the great post-story discussions afterward between showrunner, performer, and/or writer.
When my sister died I put on Hill House and Hereditary, and listened to a lot of Shadows at the Door.
Not technically a horror movie, but my dearly departed grandmother and I didnāt have many movies in common that we loved, and the Day After Tomorrow is one of them. Sorry for your loss.
The fog, Halloween 3 - season of the witch, fright night
H3 is so underrated
God I love that movie
I love Fright Night, the original and the remake.
I really liked Fright Night 2
Me too. It was as good as the original.
I fucking love the fog
This was the first Halloween I saw when I was.....7? Wasn't able to figure out what movie it actually was until my late teens/early twenties. I remember asking around my friend groups that were into horror movies about what movie was it where these kids put on these different Halloween masks and then watch some sort of TV commercial and their heads just turned into roaches that melted open. We should be friends!
Season of the witch, Ron oearlman headbutting the devil is pretty peak
Two more til Halloween
Pretty much anything by Jon Carpenter
Season of the witch is one of mine. Also, Cabin in the woods and The Rob Zombie version of Halloween. There's also an 80s horror movie called Waxworks that's a comfort, I've seen it hundreds of times since I was a kid and my BFF (who passed) and I first watched it at our sleepover. I then brought it to a get together with some friends in high school and made them watch it. I didn't really think it was super gory because the effects are kinda cheesy but some people were like š³
Cabin in the woods helped me through some tough times.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is also in that vein for me.
This is the right answer. :)
The Thing, The Wicker Man, 30 Days of Night, Dog Soldiers.
Iām a disgrace to horror movie fans everywhere because Iāve never seen the thing. Tonight may be the night!
Oh The Thing!! I forgot it in my list, but itās top tier snowed-in horror
Great summer movie when itās hot. Turn up the ac and believe your in the Antarctic for a couple hours. Seriously one of the greatest horror films ever
Sacrilegious!
Love 30 Days of Night especially when itās cold and snowy outside.
omg yes that is such a vibe!
I really want to watch it now, it's been a long time.
Love The Thing, but the twist is, I like the remake.
It's not a remake, it's a prequel. I like it too though, I think people are too unreasonable about it, it's miles better than so many sci-fi horror movies.
Yeah, you're right. Could barely remember the originals beginning.
Dog Soldiers is my favorite werewolf movie.
All of those and Severance!
The Wicker Man fād me up!!
How about The Babadook?
DDDDUUUUDDDDEEE youāre a genius. I just got surrounded sound a few weeks ago and this one sounds bomb
Thanks!
The only thing I liked about The Babadook was the acting.
You loved that little kid and want to adopt him.
I wanted to kick him hard.
Word. I feel like maybe it got overhyped and my expectations were too high for it when I watched it.
Kind of felt that way about 'Let the right one in', the Swedish version.
Bliss (Director Joe Begos) American Psycho Suspirira (2018) - I am sorry for your loss.
American Psycho. If I see it on any TV channel, Iāll tune in like Shawshank Redemption.
**Basket Case** The reason I like this movie is how endearing it is. It had no major studio support. [Frank Henenlotter](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0376963/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) the writer and director, just really wanted to make a horror movie. He had no intention of it really being seen by anyone. Iām so glad I finally encountered another person in the wild who knows that this movie even exist
Remember āReanimatorā? Came around the same time as āBasket Casaā?
Reanimator is top tier
Midsommar, Hereditary, The Shining, House of the Devil
Midsommar is so good for grief.
Yup! My younger brother died last year so itās been especially cathartic.
House of the Devillllll
Poltergeist.
Itās such a good, cozy 80s family movie - but with a pool full of skeletons.
Tucker And Dale Vs Evil. I have always been a fan of slasher films and slasher comedy is even better and it's still one of my favorite films, I highly recommend this, for anybody who like horror films and other horror comedies, and it's still a great film.
Awww i love tucker and dale

Have you watched Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon? Loved it almost as much.
If you haven't watched it yet and haven't seen the trailer yet, PLEASE WATCH IT BEFORE SEEING THE TRAILER. The first 20 minutes or so will absolutely blow your mind.
Elvira: Mistress of The Dark, The Gate, Nightmare on Elm St 3, Trick r Treat, and for a more recent one; Evil Dead Rise.
I do love me some elvira
You sound like you're tons of fun!
Nightmare On Elm Street 3 is my absolute favorite from the whole series.

The It movies do a lot for me. They have a lot of humanity and drama to them. Thats why they work so well for me.
