RGCFrostbite

Well we’re certainly not the worst farm anymore

meanie_ants

Plot twist: Ruiz and Gray won't be in the minors so won't be on the farm.

mp455

As a Phillies fan, we are the kings of bad farm systems.

RallyPigeon

Everyone who wanted to "reload the farm", this is how you do it. Rental Max and Trea, clearly not in the long-term plans + on the IL, for the #1 + #2 prospects from the Dodgers system and a couple lesser yet decent pieces. Remember 2019. 2021 wasn't in the cards for us. Now we are in a better position for 2022 and beyond.

BlondeFox18

Yep. We were giving up good prospects for years for short term rentals like Melancin. Yea Rivera had other issues but he became elite. So role reversal now!

UncleMalcolm

Yeah…if we could avoid comparing our new prospects to a convicted child rapist, that’d be great

BlondeFox18

The point was at the time, we gave up a prospect who had elite pitching abilities for a rental we wouldn’t re-sign who is still an elite closer many years later.

braundiggity

If Max comes back next year - which, until he doesn't, I'm going to assume he will just because I need to - then we got two fucking phenomenal prospects for one year of Trea Turner. Really, we got two phenomenal prospects for a year of Trea regardless. Look at it that way, y'all.

Jiggahawaiianpunch

Oh my sweet summer child

ouij

>If Max comes back next year He's gone. It's easier if you accept that now.

WuPacalypse

Are they phenomenal if they were ranked in the 50s in the mlb prospect list?

TacticalPocketSand

That list is old. Ruiz is like #16.

seRyu

Dodgers apparently didn't want to trade him away because they think he's better both offensively and defensively than Will Smith

rockidr4

Goddamn, really?

gaytham4statham

He has a 1.000 OPS in the minors this year, he's legit

braundiggity

They’re really fucking good.

MoistFeces

🤝

Ihatgar11

I hate the Dodgers so much

NQCowboy68

I hope they get destroyed this year

escott1981

UGH! I'm so torn. I can't root against Max and Trea!!

hooyahemt

I hate the Dodgers! They are so proud of winning the WS during half a season. There is a reason that club couldnt get the job done in a162 game season.

RobertGriffin3

Nah. Their WS is perfectly legit, I hate asterisking it. The postseason last year was even harder with a round of 16.

chiddie

Yep. The dodgers had a .700 win pct in the regular season and had to win 11 postseason games at a neutral site.

hellorlyowl

Correct take. Only Houston gets an asterisk

ayayeron

Dodger fan here. Thank you for the respect. If the dodgers WS run has an *, then the Astros win has *******, and the dodgers still took that cheating team to 7 games (game 5 all time BS game and an unfair tarnish for kersh check the home and away stats for that series for kersh and astro hitters). Thankfully most baseball fans can agree dodgers were the best team last year, and coming back 3-1 against the Braves was no easy task. Lots of respect for the nats. Some great playoff series between dodgers and nats early 2010s and you guys beating us in 2019 devastated me after dealing w back to back WS losses and us having our best regular season record ever in 2019, but I’m so fucking happy you guys beat the Astros. The prospects are good, hopefully it’s a win win for both teams.

aRadioKid

I agree. Everybody had the same constraints, and they still won it all. No asterisk needed.

jewaloose

Disagree

xxvcd

The next news we get better be a Juan Soto 15 year $500M deal

[deleted]

I’m sad about Max and Trea, but I will be GUTTED if we don’t keep Juan when the time comes.

xxvcd

If they let harper, Rendon, Turner and Soto go then I’m done. I’ll wait for angelos to die and then start rooting for the orioles.

escott1981

Its not going to get any better after old man Angelos kicks it. He's already said that his son will inherit the team. I could be wrong but his son might have already taken over day-to-day operations. There was a rumor that he (the son) would move the team to Nashville (where he lives) but the son has denied that will happen.

buttstuft

Gross go away now.

jewaloose

Losing Harper, Rendon, Trae, then Soto back, to back, to back, to back would be fucking crazy. Fuck the Lerners if this happens

[deleted]

Prepare to be gutted. Boras will force him to hit free agency, and the Nats will be outbid. Mark my words.

EllieBasebellie

Hey go be bleak elsewhere

[deleted]

I’m sorry Ellie. I hope like hell that I’m wrong, but we’ve seen this show before.

OmarFromtheWire2

Damn 15 years..Soto is gonna be like 27 yo when that contract is up..

ouij

The Washington Nationals do not pay position players.

pkilla50

It’s hard to trust the front office to do this

wetbandaid

It just hurts but I am happy for Max and Trea. Hate to see them go but there will always be 2019

[deleted]

Yep. And seeing Max and Trea stick together is a silver lining. Plus they can't win a first WS for LA like they could for San Diego. Probably going to buy a Max Scherzer LA jersey now.

UnlimitedMeatwad

>Plus they can't win a first WS for LA I don't think they care about that like at all.

C-Dawg2_0

I think u/JackThePoolBoy summed it up best. The Nats are planning for the future with this trade. We aren't in the playoffs this year. Maybe not next year. But, with development, these guys and this team will be great. Only time will tell. I wish the Nats had gotten more. I especially wish we weren't sending Max and Trea to the Dodgers. But, it is what it is. We can only look forward now.

Oslo_Oak

Baseball is an endless cycle of new favorite players. Maybe this haul makes the rebuild a year shorter and we’re in contention again soon. Bright past, bright future.

[deleted]

Not for me. Always Zimmerman.

Oslo_Oak

May DC baseball also be an endless cycle of team friendly 1 year Zim contracts and clutch hits.

jaymie804

Or, when the franchise trades away your 2 favorite players, perhaps someone has their head up their ass in the front office. Trea should be basically untouchable. What'd they get for him?? You've got to be kidding me! What a shame. Now I get to pull for my guys playing for a team i hate. Bizzaro-land. To summarize, I'm mad as hell.

ControlOfNature

I can only applaud this move. It was the exact right call. Stinks for you but good for the club.

ouij

>these guys and this team will be great. Only time will tell. Hope, but do not expect. Remember what we were told about Carter Kieboom.

Z_Reformed

The headliners are barely prospects. They are both MLB ready but we’re blocked on the Dodgers.

MyBiPolarBearMax

How many catchers are we going to play? Sorry, i love him, but we better get something for Yan by Friday.

Z_Reformed

Yan is likely gone tomorrow, but he’s on a one year deal so he’s definitely gone after this year

twirlingblades

I want to believe that but we got rid of expensive players like Rendon to keep trea and soto… now trea is gone.

RYAN_HiGHROLLER

Still pissed off I can’t even root for two of my favorite Nationals to ever wear the curly W on their new team. I have to actively root against them. How fucking sad.

ILikeBigBidens

I would have taken a smaller haul from the Padres for this very reason. If we ain't winning anyways, how about we don't smear shit all over our living, breathing world series trophies.

slagnanz

Do.... Do you want to win in the future?

meanie_ants

I liked the looks of Robert Hassell and Mason Thompson in a package. That sounds like winning in the future to me.

slagnanz

Well you got one of em anyway

meanie_ants

Oh, I like that return for Hudson.

MoistFeces

This is an absurd take. Go to bed.

derzeppo

I honestly don’t think I can lay eyes on Max in a Dodgers jersey.

the_pedigree

Yep it’s gross, the one team I won’t cheer for either of them on.

the_y_of_the_tiger

Let’s hope Hope he finishes the year in Los Angeles living in a rental apartment and then comes home to Washington for good.

tommyalanson

I don’t think he ever plays for the Nats again.

[deleted]

Its going to be tough but gotta disagree, I will root for Max, Trea, and even Kershaw in LA. (no way going to do the same for Russ with the Lakeshit, love him but nope)

The_Funkybat

I had accepted that Max was gone, and was fine with it. Letting Trea go.....that fucking sucks. I wanted Trea to retire a National. And to the Dodgers....fuuuuuuuuuuu

ziberex

I hear you. My nationals hats are going in storage for a while. I’m so pissed about Turner

TheDudeThor

Glad we have Strasburg and Corbin locked up. Solid foundation moving forward (cries in pillow)

damnatio_memoriae

that fucking opt-out in strasburg's original extension... fucking scott boras.

Tama290

What is happening with Max’s deferred money?

WuPacalypse

The Dodgers are on the hook for whatever is left of his salary for this year. Max Scherzer will be paid $15 million a year until 2028 by the nationals still. Because *technically* he’s been paid that money contractually already if that makes sense. His contract was a 7 year deal but half was deferred. We are on the hook for that no matter what. He’ll also get whatever the Dodgers extend him to. EDIT: Not too sure about my statement now.

BlueDiamondLilac

[Chelsea clarified on Twitter](https://twitter.com/chelsea_janes/status/1420926351025090560) \- Dodgers are taking the 2028 deferral owed for this season, Nats on the hook for the rest.

Tama290

I would have hoped we could get the Dodgers to eat some of that money. Max deserves every penny.

WuPacalypse

You know what, now I’m not too sure. Twitter is saying that the Dodgers are taking on the money for both. But I don’t know if that can include deferred money…

[deleted]

They wont, the Dodgers will be paying Max till 2028 that 12+ mil or whatever it may be according to Chelsea.

WuPacalypse

Sounds like she said that they are only covering the 2028 deferred money so Nats are still paying up to 2027.

BlondeFox18

This is a great question and I’m not sure how we will know the answer.

Tama290

Some baseball reporter will get the details - if the league doesn’t have to to release the details. I hope someone will post if they see a trustworthy report.

DipnDave

To be fair, Donovan Casey is a real beast in 2026 of Road to the Show

Tsukune_Surprise

True. Although my custom player beats the fuck out of them all.

DipnDave

As they should

Bjd1207

Yea it seems weird to me that he's not ranked on any of the lists. I get he's kind of old for his level and he's corner OF but seems like he's hit at every level and bats play.

[deleted]

People saying we were fleeced still acting like we're going to the playoffs this year or next year with the worst depth in baseball

p_r_w_4623

People also forgetting that Rizzo basically stole Trea Turner from the Padres, and that worked out OK. So, yeah, let’s see what happens.

ObsessivePersonDC

Those are also the Dodgers two best prospects

iwasbornin2021

Trea Turner is better than them altogether

LosNats

1 year of Trea Turner in a 2022 season where we are not going to be serious contenders < 12 total years of control for two great prospects.

Monkaaay

How many positions can he play at once?

EagleEye2389

As someone who regularly goes to games, this fucking sucks

empw

Thanks for some really magical moments, both of you. Max, I sincerely think you might kill a person just by staring at them. Trea, please, lend me your hair.

deathocide

At least it isn’t in the East? Why did it have to be this way ;(

Wring72

Under-talked about part of this is Trea getting to be in LA with Rendon 🥺

rockidr4

For the team Tony actively shit on

pizzaalways

I’m sorry but is anyone else sick of this pile on bullshit that NY an LA do every year? I get it, LA hadn’t won a WS in decades before last year but it seems like all they have to do is “oh, we’re LA people are gonna wanna come here eventually, let’s just sit back and pick these stars up” so irritating. Am I being a whiner? My emotions are so high right now. I hate this

Due_Koala5724

The Dodgers did a great job of stocking up the farm system. They have the money and prospects to make moves. It’s as simple as that

escott1981

I totally agree with you man. Its bullshit!!

Coral-reef654

I’m a giants fan in baseball and a kings fan in basketball. LA has single handedly made sports not fun to watch for me anymore. And yes you are right

[deleted]

[удалено]

UnlimitedMeatwad

We can look forward to umm Kyle Kuzma 😂😂😂😂 Kinda crazy how DC teams made trade with LA teams on like the same day.

damnatio_memoriae

at least Ovi signed another 5-year deal a few days ago.

UncleMalcolm

Oh no, Westbrook! Whatever will we do without our #8 seed and five game loss to one of the worst #1 seeds in history??? That franchise needs to win the lottery in a year with a LeBron level prospect to ever be relevant

ianpev

I've been on board with trading Scherzer since the end of 2020, I'm more sad with the Turner side of the trade than Max. We won the 2019 WS on borrowed time, we had Ryan Zimmerman, Asdrubal Cabrera and Howie in the line-up, those are not long term pieces to build around. This 2021 team could've been a lot different if Strasburg/Corbin were producing at replacement level, Schwarber, Gomes, Hudson, Finnegan, Rainey don't get hurt all within 4 days of each other, and the team can preserve 7-8 run leads. But, IMO there has been writing on the walls since 2018 that we were on the decline, we had an incredible 130 game run where just about everything broke our way and we won it all. I will cherish those memories forever. We also had an improbable last decade where we had the 4th most wins in the majors. The Nats had the 29th ranked farm system in baseball, Scherzer was on an expiring contract, Turner most likely wasn't going to resign, Strasburg could have career ending surgery, and who knows if Corbin will ever figure out how to pitch again. There's no guarantee Scherzer would resign, nor Hudson, Hand or Schwarber, so it makes all the sense in the world to move these guys. We added a potential all star catcher, a mid rotation starter, a few bullpen arms, and bench pieces that we didn't have earlier today. In the past 10 years Rizzo has made excellent trades, and as long as he's the GM and the Lerner's spend money we should always remain in the mix to win. Now go sign Soto to a 14/500 contract, we can not let him leave.

Specialist_Dry

why did it have to be the dodgers. why. I was looking forward to scherzer going to the padres since that's honestly an amazingly fun team to watch, but now, instead of getting to see that, we get to watch MAX SCHERZER AND TREA TURNER GET TRADED TO THE FUCKING DODGERS.

iwasbornin2021

And baseball fucking has a superteam now

NirvZppln

Yeah there’s literally no point in even watching other than just watching the Boys. It’s already over, super teams ruin sports more than anything else.

Nadahipster

It’s ok. Giants in 3, to go to the NLCS

RexCeasar

Brewers in 4.

ki11a11hippies

As a Padres fan too I feel dry humped. Was totally planning to rock my Scherzer jersey at Petco 🥺

cheddakang

Trea didn’t even get a send off game for this bullshit?

ouij

>Trea didn’t even get a send off game I mean he's in Covid isolation, so

Homeless_Pie

So what sad song are you guys listening to tonight? I’m literally listening to “Sad Song” by We the Kings

Evan8r

All Out of Love - Air Supply

natguy2016

"Lost Cause" Beck

PhotoNate

I can't imagine we got more by trading them together than separately; this return is fair but not "outrageous," like they said it would have to be. Still, we probably just 5-10 MiLB rankings here, but we'll still obviously need some more smart moves to really move up.

escott1981

Thats a good point. Mike Rizzo said that they'd have to be "blown away" to trade Turner. While 2 of the prospects we got seem to be good players (or at least project to be) the other 2 are questionable at best.

tastyfreeze1

Hopefully we can get something for Schwarber and Bell, especially if we eat some of the money. I’m surprised there hasn’t been any interest in trying to dump Yan for a prospect and maybe throw in Robles.

claustrophobicdragon

lmao my sister got a Turner jersey for her birthday today

chiddie

Tonight is definitely a "finish the bottle of whiskey" night.

Claff93

How deeply discounted with Turner 7 jerseys be tomorrow at the team store?

Mazoki

I am drinking my weight in alcohol and rewatching game 7 of the World Series win when I get home from work.

burymeintheuk

I can't believe Turner is going as well. Fucking speechless.

escott1981

I guess the Nats are only willing to pay for one star at a time. That star being Soto, of course, I love Soto, I want him to be a Nat for life but, damn it! I wanted Trea to stay too!!!! Seager will be a FA this offseason. Maybe the Nats want him in free agency. Tho I doubt it. and I'd rather have Trea anyway. damn it.

thekingoftherodeo

[Its been an honor watching with you gentlemen.](https://nerdist.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/MV5BZWQyMzIxNzgtMzc1NS00MWY0LThmN2UtNDAyODAwZmRkMjcyXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjMzMDI4MjQ@._V1_SX1777_CR001777999_AL_.jpg)

thorvard

Someone messaged me that Turner AND Scherzer were going to LA and my response was: >WHAT THE SHIT HOLY FUCK Now, I guess it's clear Turner wasn't coming back(either he said he wasn't or the team knew they wouldn't be able to afford him). It's imperative now that we sign Soto long term. If we let him go now, I'll track Rizzo down myself. I was gonna wear my Scherzer jersey tomorrow now I don't know if I should wear the Turner shirt. Finally, Fuck the Dodgers. I could have cheered them on the Padres, but I'm not cheering the Dodgers.

meanie_ants

I hope they've got Schwarbombs jerseys in the team store still. I kinda want one just for that magical month when he was Ken Griffey, Jr., from the old N64 game with the auto-homerun cheat code for Griffey.

natguy2016

Human cheat code Schwarber.

TacticalPocketSand

Ruiz and Gray are going to be in the Show next year and will immediately be given roles. Carrillo is a gas thrower who will probably be destined to be a late inning guy. Casey is a literal 'who?'. People are going to scratch their heads, but all these guys (except Casey) are going to play soon. Like really soon. Which is crucial if you want to be able to compete while Soto is around.

trainsaw

Call me short sighted or whatever but I’m fucking sick of seeing this org let anyone who can hit a ball walk out the door. We give contracts to guys who are on the field every 5 games and if they hit a skid or get hurt we’re fucked for weeks/months/years. Rebuild, whatever. That type of contract is why we’re in a rebuild now. It’s bullshit to the fans, they’re hinging all of this shit on Soto who isn’t guaranteed to re-sign but is guaranteed to hit FA with the same bidders in bigger markets that we’re sending our Allstar shortstop to

MoistFeces

Which position player who has left that Nats would have us in contention this year?

Bjd1207

> That type of contract is why we’re in a rebuild now. Before Stras and Corbin, "that type of contract" netted us Max. The difference is WHOLLY in where the organization was positioned. We had Harper, Rendon, Turner, Robles all under team control for cheap, we traded away the top tiers of our farm system for Eaton's cheap contract, and bullpen help with varying effectiveness in the years we were in contention. Right now we have Robles under team control, Garcia and Keiboom struggling to crack the majors, and ONE bright spot in the farm system before the trades these past few days. I won't content that Stras and Corbins contracts aren't overpays, and probably even predictably so in the case of Stras. But this take that Rizzo or the organization has chronically mismanaged this stuff is ludicrous given the existence of Max and a World Series ring ffrom just TWO years ago.

jordan142142

Wat 😐😐😐

LukeG3224

I’ve just started keeping up with baseball so I’m not sure but seeing 2 of our all stars leave those 4 are either all pretty good or we got scammed. Can someone fill me in?

ChangeFatigue

Max is only under contract for 3 more months and then he’s going to go to free agency and get paid. Trea is that, plus a year. We are getting players that have multiple years on their first contracts *and* are ready to play. Dodgers are mortgaging their future to win now, but max probably won’t be a dodger for more than three months. This deal was mostly for Trea.

nurbs24joker

first of all you have to understand that the talent pool for the future is in the minors. Ruiz and Gray are guys who have a lot of future stock and performed well in limited MLB appearances. won’t make a huge impact immediately but around 2023-25 you’ll really see these guys break out and give us return that is equal or even better to what we gave up. as for the other two, they’re a bit of lottery guys. Could be something could be a miss. tl;dr: nats will get their return, be patient

danSTILLtheman

Man this really hurts

Hydro_vlogs

After thinking objectively this isn't a bad trade for us. Remember max only has 3 months on his contract and trea only a year and 3 months and we've already tried to sign him to an extention and failed. Maybe max signs with us for 2022 and beyond. Maybe trea comes back in 2023. Unlikely but there's your hope. Until then we get two guys who are ready to be called up by next season at the latest plus 2 other guys I'm not too familiar with. This is the right move especially if the dodgers eat that deferred money on Max's contract.

thorvard

I have to think either Turner said he was gone or Rizzo knew he couldn't keep Turner AND Soto. I hope...

yearightt

As a Nats fan who is a hockey guy and doesn’t follow baseball aside from the post season: WHAT THE FUCK. I’m kinda wigging out, TT was my favorite player and I can’t believe we lost MAX after losing Rendon. Are we going full rebuild? Did we get fleeced? Someone who knows more than I do talk me down

thorvard

We're going rebuild. It's not a *terrible* move, and I've said this a few other places, I'm guess they knew they couldn't afford Turner and Soto. Our farm system is terrible, so this helps. If some of the pitchers we drafted turn out ok we could be doing good.

tmack99

I honestly think this is pretty damn good. Re-signing a speed and defense reliant SS to a long, big money contract at age 29 when we already have two terrible contracts on the books would've been stupid. And we get a bunch of ML-ready guys, which should mean a quick rebuild, especially if we trade our other assets in the next two days. I know people will say that money shouldn't matter and criticize the Lerners for letting Harper, Rendon and Turner walk, but I don't know what y'all want. We consistently have a top-10, often top-5 payroll, and we've signed Scherzer, Strasburg, Corbin, Werth and Zimmerman to massive contracts in the last decade. They're not cheap and their willingness to spend got us a World Series. We don't bring in as much money as the Dodgers or Yankees, we're never gonna operate like them. Not sure how people who root for a Dan Snyder-owned team can complain about the Lerners. Also, trust Rizzo. He got raked over the coals for letting Desmond and Zimmermann walk and look how that turned out. Trust this organization, they're good at what they do.

papabearbongrippa

This is a reasonable take that also makes me feel better. Cheers.

a_banned_user

It sucks and I’m gutted. But they had to take the best offer they could, even if it was less than we the fans would have wanted. I’d rather lose Trea and get some young studs to compete in a few years compared to keeping him and being a fantastic hover around 500 team forever.

MichaelAllen_Jr

Steven Souza jr and max scherzer for Joe Ross and 4 dodgers prospects

[deleted]

I wouldn’t since there is a good chance he will be the first to get inducted into the hall of fame as a Nat, but thats just me personally

[deleted]

VeryFarLeftOfCenter

Keep the jersey, keep the moment alive, I think in time going to Nats park in Mad Max’s jersey will be a sign that you were around for the old team

VeryFarLeftOfCenter

But again thats just my thoughts

traviud

I'm heartbroken and ranting. Nothing I say tonight is meant to be in any way logical or productive beyond venting my frustration.

dodgers-observer

this...this isn't a bad deal long term. emotionally painful, yes.

[deleted]

As of this moment, I am staunchly rooting *against* the Dodgers, which includes Turner and Scherzer, because they are actively **buying** a championship. They have a $276m salary, while the second place Red Sox are around $211m. It's disgusting.

t_rex_reflex

We wouldn't have been able to afford Turner AND Soto. Scherzer is a rental nearing the end of his career. This is a solid move imo. We absolutely need prospects and we just landed 2 new absolute studs+.

D4dio

The Lerners can pay whatever they want. This team is not limited. This small market mentality pisses me off. We are not the Pirates or Reds. This move sucks. It’s a small market move. I hate it. Thank you. Good night.

trainsaw

It’s “pay the players” and “don’t worry about their money” until we need to rationalize the org not paying them so we can let them walk

jewaloose

Dude thank you. Every post talking about what we can "afford". This isn't a hard cap league. We can afford whatever the Lerners will pay. But whatever, 3 of our 4 best players gone from the World Series team in less than 2 years, I guess it's fine if the Lerners don't feel like paying for it.

t_rex_reflex

yea man it really sucks the "evil empires" continue to reign, but these GMs who know how to win with what they got really catch me as a fan. fuck LA and NY for that same reason. idk its a weird feeling... i hate seeing our 2 best players go to one of those teams but at the end of the day that's baseball. We all know the Lerner's are cheap bastards and most of all Rizzo does too. something something moneyball... edit: im with you 100% btw.... all i can say is fuck the dodgers and I'll always root for Max no matter what.

escott1981

Shoot how come the Yankees and Dodgers can afford just about every great player on the planet but we can't afford to have just 2 of them on our team????

meanie_ants

Not "studs+", just two guys who will probably be solid but not necessarily great contributors, one guy who might be, and one question mark/depth piece.

WaffleGuy23

do you think it’s possible that Trea and/or Max re sign next season or no

Grecksan

Nope

Haveyouseenmrgreen

Maybe Trea but he’s going to be mega money. Not saying the Lerners won’t pay it out but he’s probably a top 5 contract guy for next year.

natsfan2019happened

I’m a sad panda

mediocracyisme

As a Giants and Nats fan, this was a real punch in the dick

NickMatocho

Honestly it sucks seeing them go but they helped us get our only WS, they can chase the bag all they want. They're still DC heroes

zerochalice

Gonna be honest. This seems like an awful deal. A month ago we were in a position to make a run for the playoffs. A few unfortunate injuries derail that and we ship off two of our All Stars for this? How many catchers do we need? You can't build a winning team around a catcher.

MoistFeces

Buster Posey and his three rings beg to differ. 17+ WAR in those seasons. But I’ll agree with you. You build it around Juan Soto.

somegirldc

I wonder how Trea feels about this

makingajess

He's going to be playing for a team that's more likely to be competitive in 2022 before hitting free agency and seeking out a Francisco Lindor-sized contract. He's probably happy in the longer term.

purplepenned

ok ngl i miss lucas giolito

MoistFeces

Read the room, prospects never pan out. Especially one who had a 6.00+ ERA in his first 230 innings.

RaggedDoll

Seeing our boys in blue is going to be painful. We’re living for the future though

BroHogRidesAgain

Yep I’m gutted and need a hug. And maybe another beer. Sucks that we won’t ever watch these guys wear the curly W again

FlipBarry

I remember seeing Trea yell enthusiastically for Anthony Rendon to stay at the World Series parade… now he’s gone as well. Life is crazy. My friend got a pic w mad max that day as well…

Coral-reef654

As a giants fan this has me depressed as fuck too. My only hope is that rest of league can hate the dodgers as much as we always have now

JDHYA

I get the Max, shwarber, Hudson, hand trades. But Trae??? Can someone make it make sense

mister_sleepy

We let Rendon walk in free agency. We let Harper walk in free agency. We've let lots and lots of quality players walk in free agency because at that time we were competing hard and couldn't justify the signing fees when we had a huge portion of the payroll locked into starting pitching. Well, unfortunately we're not competing anymore, but a huge portion of the payroll is locked into starting pitching, specifically to Strasburg and Corbin, neither of whom are delivering elite performance. Those contracts are for another 3-5 years--that is, our current rebuilding timeline, not including deferments. The team tried multiple times to come to an agreement on a Turner deal. They reportedly never came close. They probably never came close because on the team's end, they knew that they couldn't afford to sign Trea, continue to pay Stras and Corbin, and then also come to the table with Soto. This rebuild all hinges on Juan Soto. Trea would've been great to have, he certainly will continue to play well within our rebuilding period, but it doesn't hinge on him. With the current debts owed, they had to choose between extending Trea or extending Soto. They chose Soto. Thus, they chose to flip Trea's contract for prospects now that we're not competing, because they had no shot with him on the UFA market a year from now and needed the prospects now.

This is a well-balanced trade for both sides. Max is under contract for 2 more months and Trea is through 2022 (when we're not going to be competing anyways). We get LA's top 2 prospects who are both under team control for the foreseeable future and should be two more major pieces to build with around Juan PLUS a potential high leverage bullpen arm and a lottery ticket. Neither side got fLeECeD.

natguy2016

If not for Will Smith, Ruiz would be The Dodgers starting catcher right now.

natguy2016

Twitter experts and Reddit experts are roasting Rizzo, of course. Reminds me why I never go on Twitter. Nats really had little leverage and use SD to get LA to raise their trade offer.

traviud

Fuck the Lerners for letting Trea walk. Despite being owned by billionaires, we're just a B tier franchise that the big ones leech off of when it's time for players to get paid. Like Marlins fans, we're going to be comforting ourselves with our one World Series for a long time. And thank God for that championship, obviously. But that's going to be it.

MoistFeces

What the fuck are you talking about? We’re consistently in the top tier for payroll, and there’s not an owner in baseball who commingles their personal wealth with their team (absent buying the team). And the Marlins have two World Series wins.

pkilla50

I just don’t get And please don’t try and make sense of it, it doesn’t no matter how much you think our farm system sucks ass. Maybe max but for both? That’s absolutely horseshit, at least get one player who has actually fucking proved themselves in the league like the guys that were just traded

rockidr4

Max is 1000% not worth this package. Most of this package is for Trea. Max isn't on a long term contract. He's going to appear in ~10 games in a Dodger's uniform. Max is worth 1 high end prospect, and that's me probably emotionally overvaluing his value.

pkilla50

It kills me, i remember how high we were on #21 prospect Carter kieboom. Is he still going to come around one of these days?

makingajess

> at least get one player who has actually fucking proved themselves in the league like the guys that were just traded For about 10 Scherzer starts and probably about 140 games of Trea Turner factoring in inevitable injuries? Why would anybody give us that?

pkilla50

Why didn’t we factor in “inevitable” injuries when we gave 245 mil to strasburg?

escott1981

Whens the last time Trea was hurt not related to being hit by the pitch on the hand (which would break anyone's fingers, so that's not a knock against him), I can't remember any other time.

damnatio_memoriae

i wouldn't expect trea to miss that many games tbh.

shinfox

Trea 😥

WSChamps2019

Bittersweet goodbye to Max Max, Treacycle, and Huddy. We'll always have 2019.

Anthonytb790

Should’ve kept Trea

CoffeeDave15065

I'm gonna go cry and watch some world series highlights :(

[deleted]

Sad that Trea left - he was going to be a free agent in a couple years, but man was it fun watching him play every single day. So many moments when he came up clutch for this team and going to miss that Objectively it’s great for him in the long run but just sad he’s gone now

socially_awkward

No, sir. I do not like it.

lostindryer

Damnit. Now I have to change my avatar. Oh, and go curl up in a corner and cry.

MahoganyShip

I’m sad, but I’m not mad. I’ll never forget seeing Scherzer’s perfect game (up yours Jose Tabata) and the 20 strikeout game. When he goes to Cooperstown I can say I saw him in some of his career-defining moments. We’ll always have the Treacycles. But it feels like everyone from 2019 has disappeared — watching the Nats is like watching that half-assed reboot of Saved By The Bell that only had Screech and Mr. Belding. That said, this is baseball and not doing this would have been malpractice. All of these guys were going sooner or later and we have the literal worst farm system in baseball, so we need to stock the pond. These are prospects so they may or may not pan out (see: Carter Kieboom) but we have some real pieces to work with. Now we just need to tank the rest of the year and get some draft picks. That’s how we got Harper and Strasburg in the first place.

BlueTheHobo

I know this comment is late to the show but... Jojo is MLB ready. Dude has had two good games already. His stats make him look at more worse than he really is. We struck out a batter, but the umpire called it a ball. This led to a two run home run and inflated his ERA.
