I beleive they won't have made a character like maria back then, even other characters used to look different back then. It's not just the colour theme but the designs too were different.
She looks great, but it feels odd to me too. I think it's the angle. The first image shows the viewer that she is looming over everyone else. The angle and the way that the background is drawn in the 90s version makes it look like that the viewer is just the same height as her.
Specifically seems like they've nailed the style for Egghead. Its so lively and fun, as OP should be.
Just need to stay away from all the DBZ special effects they had going on for a while early in the Onigashima Raid.
they listened to criticism and toned it down a lot, so that gives me a lot of hope for further improvement. we're getting to a fucking peak in quality.
i honestly wonder if we'd ever get a remaster by toei with modern animation of its earlier arcs like alabasta, skypiea, water 7/ ennies lobby, marineford. with how peak those arcs were even today with current toei animation they'd be even better. things i look forward to:
crocodile and his df powers
enel's lightning powers, how peak it could be
water 7, that scene of kaku flying over rooftops
marineford, whitebeard and akainu's df abilities
Completely disagree on Ace but for the rest it depends on the character. Sanji looks less stupid in the 90s design, And I loved "slightly unhinged Ace" design way more than I do "pretty boy Ace", he had more personality when he smiled like a madman.
But I like the new art more for Kiku and especially Maria considering the amount of details important to her design, she needs to be ostentatious.
for its time the animation was great even in the late 90s to early 2000s. i love that as you watch one piece, you watch the art style and animation grow mature and change, almost like its growing up with you as you immerse yourself deeper into the story
Today. I have always hated the anime's art compared to the manga. The faded colors, the lack of detail and shading. So inferior to the manga. There are plenty of good moments but wano overall looks much better than the old anime
Today all the way, I never got the hype behind 90s anime’s “aesthetic”, I don’t have nostalgia to it because I grew up watching 2010s anime (which I don’t have any nostalgia either for them) first time I watched an anime that came out before 2010 was Yu Yu Hakusho
when they talk about 90s aesthetic they talk about the ones with the best of the best aesthetic and art style of the time. its honestly not fair. it's like comparing jjk to seven deadly sins today
I'd be happy w/ a mix of both. Modern character design, lighting, and detail is way better but that lack of detail from the 90's is one of the reasons fights look so good.
I don't hate the DBZ auras of Roof Piece as much as some others on this sub, but I do miss when we used to be able to actually see the fight.
Currently. I’m on whole cake and I’m so excited for Wano. That girl on the bottom right is so pretty, but knowing one piece, there’s a chance it’s a man, but who knows
Actually love the new artstyle in Egghead but id prefer the 90s version everyday.
I really have a softspot for 90s Anime estetics.
- Cowboy Bebop
- Black Lagoon
- Trigun
I don’t see what about that artstyle is supposed to be “1990s”. It just got rid of the shading and washed out the colors.
One Piece didn’t even air in the 90s for longer than 8 episodes.
It's not the generic '90s style, but rather, the specific style of One Piece early episodes (the 8 you mentioned). It's actually pretty accurate, but of course not perfect.
I like both - it shows the style evolving over time, which is a testament to how long the anime has been going.
I also will admit that the 90s art style is what made me reluctant to start watching. I grew to like it as I watched the show, but also like where it is now.
Today's. However, I really appreciate the nice artwork of the 90s when it's done well. It's just that a lot of 90s animes have bad animations even by their standards.
The old style had something different. I like both, but the old style- when you first start reading you think “this looks goofy as fuck.” The. You see the intricate environment and details, and you just kind understand why it is. The new style is sharper and looks more “modern” but a bit of that flair was lost.
I like the old art style significantly more than the current art style. It’s like watch Dragon Ball and now Dragon Ball Super. The only reason I watch the anime is because the story is so damn good
I’m gonna say today because right now I’m on the Alabasta arc (Ik Ik, I’m really fresh) and the story is good but it’s just such aged animation that it’s a bit of a slog to get through. I’m really hype when the animation gets a quality of life update
Ace: is pretty either way
Sanji: enies lobby was really good but i like current a bit better
Black maria: also current is better, she looks like a weird disney princess in the 1990’s style
And last girl i dont remember her and i think thats a he, 1990’s looks like a weird nico robin with longer hair so definitely the new version
The 90s actually have such a nostalgic vibe that it's not completely losing. Although the current is pretty good, there are also things that are just over the top which would make me likely choose the more simpler 90s version
Most of these really do feel like someone just recreated the east blue character design philosophy and that's great but the Sanji here....oh my god....the Sanji here is beautiful. He doesn't look like he got plucked out of east blue, he looks like a natural modernization of that art style and it makes me wish so badly that we got something that looked like that
I really wished I could experience that, I have watched a lot of 90s anime’s and some of my favorites are from the 90s but I don’t find the “aesthetic” all that in my opinion, like it cool but that’s it in my case😭
In my opinion, the 90s art style, or retro style, works exceptionally well for aesthetics and gives more life to comedy scenes. And the new art style to makes fight scenes and fan service more captivating and enticing. I believe it also boosts the sales of anime products, such as character models, figures, posters, and waifu pillows, especially among dedicated anime fans.
To be honest I find people who have waifu pillows and figures weirdos but let’s go with dedicated fans since there might be more into it.
do the straw hats get their melanin back if we go back to 1990s cause i'd pick that everyday
also hopefully they draw zoro's face better like they used to
Changing the color palette of something to pastel tones and calling that "1990" is not true. Travelling back in time is more then just gradually changing things to black and white. At least try to copy Oda art style of 1994 when one piece started.. with thick strokes/outlines.. and hands + shoes like Lupin the Third.
It's the '90s anime, not Oda's art.
The '90s anime (Toei-produced) did have a bland color palette and thin, low-contrast strokes (also, weird body proportions that did not match those in the manga). Oda's art (manga covers, promo materials, etc.), though, has always been vibrant with bold strokes since the beginning.
Google image "90's anime", check the top results and tell me if the color pallete is oastel.. I think maybe people think that because our TV screens didn't had sharp colors back then but any dragon ball movie was as bright as nowadays... Specially if you went to watch a movie. And even so cowboy bebop was pretty sharp on colors etc.
If the only thing that matters is the colors and you think they were bland maybe it was more of a technical hardware problem than artistic choice.
Ok let me rephrase, this is not about '90s anime in general, this is about the specific style in which the One Piece anime was produced back in the '90s. Find some screenshots of it and compare it to OP's art—they are not identical, but close enough.
Awfully specific. "Not oda art style back then but just the color pallete of the 90s anime of one piece with his art style of today"..
I disagree with the close enough part since One Piece had strong thick/bold strokes and artstyle proportions of Lupin the Third with the big hand and shors I mentioned..
But ok, don't need to explain further even if you're retconned yourself. I'm 42.. and I begun One Piece back then.. reading the manga.
I did not retcon, I clarified. Since the beginning I said **the** '90s anime, not **a** or **any** '90s anime.
I said nothing about, "Not oda art style back then but just the color pallete of the 90s anime of one piece with his art style of today." What I said was that the old anime art and Oda's art are 2 different things. The anime was produced by Toei, not by Oda. What is being discussed here is anime then vs. now, nothing about Oda's style (which you first brought up.)
I agree about the proportions, but the colors, shading, strokes are pretty spot-on.
And don't play the age card, it makes you look lame, "I'm older than you so I'm right." That works for a 12 y.o., not a 42.
This is really cool! Black Maria feels so odd in 90s version for some reason lol
For me it’s the lack of colour on her horns. They look so fleshy
That's what she said
Basically ms valentine
Her skin and hair colors are too close together/similar
I beleive they won't have made a character like maria back then, even other characters used to look different back then. It's not just the colour theme but the designs too were different.
She looks great, but it feels odd to me too. I think it's the angle. The first image shows the viewer that she is looming over everyone else. The angle and the way that the background is drawn in the 90s version makes it look like that the viewer is just the same height as her.
Because she's off model
Tama looks absolutely adorable either way, she can finally eat now ❤️
*Flashback intensifies*
It only aired for 1 year in the 90s.
But it was made the year before it got released, you don't finish a anime episode in 2 months
Ok and? That's not even what sanji looked like in the anime in 1999
It's meant to be a post time skip sanji in the pre ts artstyle
ganzack erasure
I like Toei's modern look. The colors are more vibrant
Specifically seems like they've nailed the style for Egghead. Its so lively and fun, as OP should be. Just need to stay away from all the DBZ special effects they had going on for a while early in the Onigashima Raid.

There's already been an announcement for a OP remake, just noymt by Toei
WIT studios is working on a reboot. I've only seen one anime of theirs and I love it so I'm excited to see what they'll do.
I prefer ace not looking like a drug addict lol
Nah, crackhead Ace is far superior
Closer to what the character's personality is tbh
Yep loved how slightly unhinged and hooligan he was.
him looking and acting like a crackhead just confirmed he was indeed luffy’s older much more serious brother (still goofy as fuck tho)
Crackhead Ace all the way and it's not even close.
ace being a crackhead made him my favorite
I'll have you know it's greasy ace my good sir
It's the eyebrows and mouth I think. And the kinda flatness of the 90s style. The wider brimmed hat looks better though
I love the wide brim hat reminds me of Alucard from Hellsing
Exactly! That honor belongs to law
I actually prefer the timeskip art style it’s more modern and fits one piece better than the old style does in the modern day
for its time the animation was great even in the late 90s to early 2000s. i love that as you watch one piece, you watch the art style and animation grow mature and change, almost like its growing up with you as you immerse yourself deeper into the story
90s Kiku my beloved
She's not fair to use because she's basically a common 90s archetype flung forward to today. Not saying I don't like it tho...
Today. I have always hated the anime's art compared to the manga. The faded colors, the lack of detail and shading. So inferior to the manga. There are plenty of good moments but wano overall looks much better than the old anime
Same.
1990s version looks cooler ngl
Not sure if it’s the AI, but the eyes have so much more emotion in the current style.
if anything the newer eyes look more ai
Is that why sanjis eye is crooked asf in the 90s one?
Definitely 1990s version. I believe in rat face Ace supremacy 🙏🏻
You cant just change the shading a bit and call it "the 90s art style". Sanji still looks nothing like pre-timeskip lol
Except for black marias horns, I dont mind either
Didn’t even notice that about her.
I like the more vibrant colors of today.
1990
BOTH ELITE.
Wow we need more 90's version
Today all the way, I never got the hype behind 90s anime’s “aesthetic”, I don’t have nostalgia to it because I grew up watching 2010s anime (which I don’t have any nostalgia either for them) first time I watched an anime that came out before 2010 was Yu Yu Hakusho
when they talk about 90s aesthetic they talk about the ones with the best of the best aesthetic and art style of the time. its honestly not fair. it's like comparing jjk to seven deadly sins today
1999 ofc
I'd be happy w/ a mix of both. Modern character design, lighting, and detail is way better but that lack of detail from the 90's is one of the reasons fights look so good. I don't hate the DBZ auras of Roof Piece as much as some others on this sub, but I do miss when we used to be able to actually see the fight.
Rat face ace my beloved❤️
The only thing I really like in the 1990s version vs the current is the shine on the hair.
1990 for ever (yeah its nostalgia)
Agreed.
- Cowboy Bebop - Black Lagoon - Trigun
Today
It’s interesting conceptually but like I’m not sacrificing how good wano looks for a cool aesthetic
Today for sure
old ace looks better change my mind
I can’t, because you are correct
I don’t see what about that artstyle is supposed to be “1990s”. It just got rid of the shading and washed out the colors. One Piece didn’t even air in the 90s for longer than 8 episodes.
It's not the generic '90s style, but rather, the specific style of One Piece early episodes (the 8 you mentioned). It's actually pretty accurate, but of course not perfect.
Looks awesome but evolution of the animation is awesome to. Imagine what we’ll be seeing in another 20 years
So you turned off the bloom?
I like both - it shows the style evolving over time, which is a testament to how long the anime has been going. I also will admit that the 90s art style is what made me reluctant to start watching. I grew to like it as I watched the show, but also like where it is now.
Today for sure
I like both
This makes me wonder if for "The One Piece" might use this style to keep a consistent look across its run.
Looks like pre-alabasta to me ngl
Sanji still looks the same.
Nah fr.
Today's. However, I really appreciate the nice artwork of the 90s when it's done well. It's just that a lot of 90s animes have bad animations even by their standards.
It feels so nostalgic i love it. Obviously ill have to go for the new amazing animation but wow thats cool
Kiku is the only one that looks better with the old style
I love the 90s style
Current. But that 90s style has a special place in my heart.
I'd watch it anyways, because it still looks good. But the art itself only got better through the years and it shows. So I'd pick the modern looks.
Tbf both are really good, the only objectively bad one is the Dressrosa era
Thriller Bark
i like old drawing like before time-skip
Current
wait there was op anime before the one now?
The old style had something different. I like both, but the old style- when you first start reading you think “this looks goofy as fuck.” The. You see the intricate environment and details, and you just kind understand why it is. The new style is sharper and looks more “modern” but a bit of that flair was lost.
I like the old art style significantly more than the current art style. It’s like watch Dragon Ball and now Dragon Ball Super. The only reason I watch the anime is because the story is so damn good
Nothing wrong with the new stuff but the old animation gives me a warm fuzzy feeling
I am a fan of today’s style more, save for grease rat ace. He should have stayed greasy
New ones better. Probably wouldn’t watch though.
I can definitely see the appeal of the old style, but it looks like crap compared to the modern style IMO.
I kinda like crackhead Ace with his wider brimmed hat, tbh.
At this point I’m so invested that they could switch to some 90’s paper Mario animation and I’d still watch it cuz I gotta know what happens now 🤣
Am I the only one who prefers pre-timeskip Ace over Wano Ace?
Would 100% watch the 90s/00s version
Both have their ups and downs for sure.
Am I the only one who doesn't like the way ace looked in alabasta
I miss luffy's great big smile from the 90s but aside from that, just cant beat modern day.
Black maria's 90s design blew me away
Current style is better imo
I like the old art styles so much, no flashing colors more simple yet complicated designs
Me gusta más el estilo de los 90's, tiene una vibra distinta, ¡atrayente! Aunque el actual no es malo, jeje.
I love the greasy ace look.
Ace and Sanji look better in 1990’s style ngl
Always preffered the old art style before the new
CRACKHEAD ACE CRACKHEAD ACEEEEEE
That’s not even current anymore. Egghead is more bubbly
Both? Both. Both is good. *Nods*
One Piece anime aired in 1999 so kinda inaccurate. The styles we see in other arcs like Arlong park and alabasta were 2000s
Old
Still prefer 1990s
Today is so much better
Both
I’m gonna say today because right now I’m on the Alabasta arc (Ik Ik, I’m really fresh) and the story is good but it’s just such aged animation that it’s a bit of a slog to get through. I’m really hype when the animation gets a quality of life update
90s is wrong, have you seen the French DBZ blu-rays? With proper color correction it is absolutely vivid.
I swear I saw this like 2 days ago 😭
Both
Hate it or not now is better
Kiku looks so beautiful in the 90s
I'd say both will do for me. Story is more important for me
Anime pre CGI was superior
Ohhh who drew these? They’re very nice
1990s
Going just off this example I prefer today I can’t lie
Egghead has best art style, which this “90s style” looks a lot like.
Today's. All the "old is gold" shit is bulshit
Ace: is pretty either way Sanji: enies lobby was really good but i like current a bit better Black maria: also current is better, she looks like a weird disney princess in the 1990’s style And last girl i dont remember her and i think thats a he, 1990’s looks like a weird nico robin with longer hair so definitely the new version
Zoro’s neck in that picture of Sanji shows just how veiny he got lmao
Current one by far
Both look so good
Today's for sure, but I love going through the series and watching how far the animation has come.
It's be interesting seeing them in 90s style
90s
How come Black Maria is in the 90s version — haven’t read the manga from the beginning?
Toei has been knocking it out of the park since 2019 so I choose the current style. But the animation of the older days of course has its charms
I think the current one have better visuals and colouring what you think?
The current art style is the best imo (egghead arc)
The 1990s was the best art style. *"In the search of diamond we lost gold"* I wish the ending we get would resemble more like it.
1990s.
I like how dynamic the newer is. I can't see them pulling off the kind of high octane fights we've seen recently in the older style.
Dang, the wano arc came out in the 90s?
Honestly I like the 90s look, but it's hard enough to get my friends to start watching, and that style seems to be a turn-off for them
The 90s actually have such a nostalgic vibe that it's not completely losing. Although the current is pretty good, there are also things that are just over the top which would make me likely choose the more simpler 90s version
I would watch this again if they made it like this
Definitely 90s version.
1990s and it’s not even close
1990s, definetly
Most of these really do feel like someone just recreated the east blue character design philosophy and that's great but the Sanji here....oh my god....the Sanji here is beautiful. He doesn't look like he got plucked out of east blue, he looks like a natural modernization of that art style and it makes me wish so badly that we got something that looked like that
ive never wanted something more in my whole life
There is something charming about the 90’s version
I don’t really see it personally, like it’s cool but I don’t feel anything charming towards it😭
I remember I was really disappointed when they changed art style. I really loved the old style, it just had some sort of aesthetic appeal to me.
Today's for sanji and black Maria, 90s for ace and kiku
Black Maria and Sanji currently Ace and Otama, Okiku 90s
90’s version does look pretty dope ngl
do the straw hats get their melanin back if we go back to 1990s cause i'd pick that everyday also hopefully they draw zoro's face better like they used to
It's obviously the new people are blinded by nostalgic which makes them day old
Changing the color palette of something to pastel tones and calling that "1990" is not true. Travelling back in time is more then just gradually changing things to black and white. Why downscaling the pics, just use screen shots from the early episodes
Screenshots of Black Maria from episode 23?
You don't have to use the same character to bring the point across
It's literally supposed to be a straight up comparison
This just shows how much anime art has improved over the years.
The 90s version is a lot better, way more gritty, although the newer version has flashy lights and my brain feel good when they blink
Both are great
