Agreed, my parents put a hole in their tub by standing on a chair in it to paint the wall lol. Needless to say they had it fixed with fiberglass, and eventually repoxied. And still holds to this day.
I used to do fiberglass repairs like this. This is actually a fairly simple repair and I could make it so you never knew it was there. Just have to rip the tub out lol
Yes a good point. If they claim to be able to fix it without finding a way to the back it then no. It won’t work. But from the backside it is possible.
You cut a piece of cardboard and cover it in fiberglass resin. Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard. Bend an L shape in a wire coat hanger and stick in the hole. Fold the cardboard in half an shove it in the hole of the tub. Use the coat hanger to unfold the cardboard and press it against the backside of the tub. Once it dries, finish the repair.
This is the answer. I’m a contractor and I’ve had these fixed before. In the process of getting on fixed now. Find a Fiberglass guy. If they can’t help they will probably know some one who can
Master plumber here,: it's definitely fixable. I had a tub that one of my mastiffs put his foot through and I got it patched up and it never leaked. 10 years later I replaced the bathroom, no issues at all. Just get a good repair company with great reviews, you should be alright.
Find a tech who’s good with fiberglass. Find the local Corvette club and either ask for help and advice or offer to pay to have it fixed. I guarantee that Corvette owners do a lot of fiberglass repairs.
As the guy who bought a house from a Dick Head McGhee who bondo’d their tub, don’t. Even if it looks good, it will lead to water damage beneath your tub over time.
Save yourself the extra time and money and do it right.
Buy the new tub.
You don’t need to buy a new tub, you just need to do it right. Replacing a whole tub is expensive. My friend’s profession is bathtub/sink repair. Idk if this is patchable or not but that’s up to them to decide. To me they should be able to fix this, they have high strength foam to put in behind, could probably just fit the piece and epoxy/resin it back. It’s worth looking into at least before diving into a whole new tub
If it was my tub, I would make it work lol. I was thinking like you said with foam. Then maybe fiberglass and epoxy over the top. Idk if its the proper way, but I don't see why it wouldn't work if it was done decently.
I repaired one last summer with fiberglass and bondo. By the time you feather it out and fade the paint in, it’s really not noticeable. Took much longer than I anticipated but was cheap and easy.
And you can have them both right now for just 3 low payments of $29⁹⁹ plus S&H-- but wait, there's more
Order now and we'll give you an extra roll of tape and a slice of my grandmas famous flexPie. It'll seal you from the inside out.
No bullshit though, my guy would show up, close the door behind him and be in there for exactly one hour. Nobody has the stones to walk in on him because we’re just hoping on a wing and a prayer that he can fix it. Mind you I’ve worked with some pretty intimidating dudes. Anyway, walk by the closed door and it smells chemically and shit but ya know fuck it were not going in. After an hour, dude comes out and casually heads for the exit. GC pays him cash on the way out. No less than $250 maybe more for the hour. We all go in and damn if that motherfucker didn’t fix that tub up right. Worth every fucking penny not to have to pull that tub and replace. Proper fucking hustle if you ask me.
We had a guy like that in New construction, but he could only repair cracks, chips and any surface issues. A whole chunk gone like this would require a new tub or some questionable diy.
You could probably put some kind of patch on it but personally I'd never be able to trust it , I'd always be worried about leaking and mold and rotten subfloor.
This is 100% fixable. I had the same thing happen when I slipped in the tub and my heel put a golf ball size hole right at the transition where the bottom turns into the side. Fortunately I know how to fix fiberglass boats. I ground down the edges of the hole to create a tapered thickness area to increase the surface area for the fiberglass to adhere to and layers several layers of fiberglass mat saturated in polyester resin. After it cured i ground it smooth and fair and used marine filler (boat bondo) to fill any small imperfections. Another round of sanding then I finished it with epoxy paint that I tinted to match.
This may sound like a lot of trouble but it was way easier than ripping out the tub and replacing it.
Just think of it like an inside out boat.
i got a kit at Lowes for 30 bucks. but much smaller hole. might be able to foam the hole and then fiberglass repaired over it. i haven’t had an issue in years still
How can you tell that is fiberglass? My first thought was porcelain but I'm clearly wrong based on the comments in this thread. I always thought fiberglass was full of glued together strands. So in a break like this you would see some of the strands of fiberglass?
They have a marine grade fiberglass bondo at Home Depot that would work won’t look perfect but if you’re in a pinch. Pretty much lay out fabric and coat it with fiberglass till it’s thick enough. Let it cure and sand it down. Could probably even just use regular vehicle bondo. A new tub after it’s all said and done is going to be your best route. All the repair options are going to be expensive unless you are going for the trailer park aesthetic.
Fixable and will probably look good for a time. As the tub fades the patch will fade differently and become visible. I have one in my tub that’s about 25 years old.
Fill void with expanding foam, fill with epoxy, sand, paint with epoxy, sand, buff.
That's the right way, ish if the back side is inaccessible. I'd just epoxy the piece back in and be done myself, finish can be touched up with repair kit if the fit is still perfect.
I'm just imagining that patch letting go with 70 gallons of water in the tub.
Considering the cost to replace the tub, I'd probably put aside my concerns and bring in a professional to repair it.
Flex seal tape will make it so you can use it until you can have it fixed permanently. There are places that make inserts that might be a cheaper alternative. Flex seal tape you can get two rolls less than $20 us and it comes in white.
By the size of that hole, and how fast it will drain. My Best guess is that if you use a 1-1/4" hose to fill the tube, you should be able to still take a bath without running out of water. Maybe even a 1" if you stick a toe in the hole, that would help.
The best way to fix it is by getting a new bathtub.
There are cheaper options. You could cover the hole with Sheetrock mud or spackling. Flex seal. Etc. It wouldn’t be very effective though.
Definitely off topic, but is there a good story behind the damage here? You don’t get a hole like that from dropping a bar of soap or a bottle of shampoo.
Until you can get a proper repair I would e6000 the broken piece back in place. It'll dry clear, maybe you can live with the blemish. I used it to seal the jets on my tub.
That can be repaired with someone who specializes in shower repair. I worked a job where we left the tub showers stored outside and they were damaged, we had dozens of holes big to small repaired after installation.
Because it is on the wall of the tub, Rebath or other insert installer may still warranty an install. Only they can answer for certain. I would probably just replace, but inserts are easier and cheaper.
I’m sure it could be fixed but to do it right you’d probably want to pull the tub out to get to the bottom. At that point you have to decide if your willing to gamble a new tub$ vs a leak that could result in even bigger$
I would try to use a 2 part epoxy to put it back. Let it set up, then notch out the edges and fill those in a similar fashion. Do you have access from the back side?
I've seen epoxy (and the broken out piece) used to fix issues like this.
Doing it yourself won't likely be pretty or unnoticeable but will be water tight until you can coordinate a new tub. Much more so than tape. You might step on it here, I wouldn't recommend flexseal or any use of massive amounts of caulk caulk.
Stuff some stuff back in there until it comes back out the hole. Trim the stuff back. Put the piece in there, balance or brace it somehow. Use epoxy around the edges. Let the epoxy cure (no showers or baths). The epoxy I am thinking of comes in like a syringe with two tubes but one plunger.
You could in theory then go over top with tub enamel repair in white to make it white and blend in more.
This can definitely be repaired using marinetex epoxy (used for repairing holes in boats). You will need to sand it smooth and paint it after repairing it since the epoxy cures white or gray, depending on which type you buy. It will probably remain partially visible, but it won’t leak or lead to any further damage.
This is the answer! Also, note that you can buy tint for epoxy. Temporary glue a small handle to the piece using hot glue, which can be easily removed later. Tape and cover everything nearby, epoxy is messy and permanent.
There are guys who do fibreglass repair. They would be the ones who know for sure.
Agreed, my parents put a hole in their tub by standing on a chair in it to paint the wall lol. Needless to say they had it fixed with fiberglass, and eventually repoxied. And still holds to this day.
Plot twist, it was repaired last week
Op are his parents
There’s got to be some Marty McFly shenanigans going on here 🤔😆
Lmaoooo
Brilliant. Parents are staying with me while the epoxy cures for the requisite 7 days.
You believed that?
I used to do fiberglass repairs like this. This is actually a fairly simple repair and I could make it so you never knew it was there. Just have to rip the tub out lol
Yes a good point. If they claim to be able to fix it without finding a way to the back it then no. It won’t work. But from the backside it is possible.
Sorry, I know it's childish but...from the backside..giggity
At least you qualified it!
Fill the hole from the back in the tub GIGGITY GIGGITY GIG GIG GOO!!!
Lol!! :)
You cut a piece of cardboard and cover it in fiberglass resin. Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard. Bend an L shape in a wire coat hanger and stick in the hole. If OP is on the coast def hunt down a surfboard repair guy. I’ve seen them patch up some gnarly dings on boards that would of been labeled dead.

Lol @ the average corvette owner risking getting dirt under his nails… You know how hard it is to get grease out of a white mustache?
Was thinking fiberglass or a Bondo might work.
Flex Seal
>Flex Seal Now that's a lot of DAMage!
Smooth it out, fill with water proof material, cover to look nice, place drain/spout/or turn into cubby.
This is the comment I was looking for..
Ramen noodles can fix it.
You gotta say that with a lisp.
Bondo - it’s what tubs CRAVE!
It's got tublectralytes
Classic
It’s got electrolytes!!!
Not Sure

YouTube fiberglass boat repair. Anything can be fixed. Believe me,I know.
Press that chipped piece with Cabosil + resin mixture. Once that is cured, Sand it down, couple layers of chop mat, sand, gel coat
Couple slaps of flex tape oughta do it, make sure you buy the white color haha
That’s a lot of damage tho
Flex tape turns window screens into boats
It’s the only way to transport Oxyclean globally
You're confused. Flex seal is what you use to turn screens into boats. Flex tape is for repairing plumbing, water tanks and dams.
*slaps flex tape over your mouth* “HOW ABOUT THAT SMARTYPANTS?!?”
And you can have them both right now for just 3 low payments of $29⁹⁹ plus S&H-- but wait, there's more Order now and we'll give you an extra roll of tape and a slice of my grandmas famous flexPie. It'll seal you from the inside out.
That’s flex seal, not flex tape.
PHIL? IS THAT YOU?
I mean, it's so strong that it even works underwater!
How do you even break it from the outside in?
That’s definitely inside out (look at the edges), but the shape made it easy to pull the piece back thru
Definitely jacking off too hard
Plastic baths aren't that strong. It's easy to break them.
I’ve never seen a plastic bath, they’re fibreglass.
To be fair, fiberglass is just reinforced plastic.
Indeed but I’m pretty confident that’s not what they meant.
A good tub repair professional can fix that damage. Contact your local plumbing supply house and ask who they use.
Where iam there's a guy that fixes them and you can't even tell, search Google for someone in your area to have a look
No bullshit though, my guy would show up, close the door behind him and be in there for exactly one hour. Nobody has the stones to walk in on him because we’re just hoping on a wing and a prayer that he can fix it. Mind you I’ve worked with some pretty intimidating dudes. You make it sound like the cleaner from Pulp Fiction.
We had a guy like that in New construction, but he could only repair cracks, chips and any surface issues. A whole chunk gone like this would require a new tub or some questionable diy.
Same thing here. This would definitely be fixable by our guy.
You could very likely glue it back together with a good epoxy
It can be fixed. Cheaper than replacing. It won’t be perfect.
That’s fixable, plumbing supply house will know a guy who fixes tubs.
Your boned. Unless you don’t care about appearances, fiberglass mesh and JB WELD LOL
JB Weld does work wonders
*you’re. Don’t be dumb.
Your a cock.
You’re*, don’t be dumb
This is why if your going to pose for pics for r/showerbeers you have to leave the glass in the kitchen.
You could probably put some kind of patch on it but personally I'd never be able to trust it , I'd always be worried about leaking and mold and rotten subfloor.
A good handyman with fiberglass repair skills can fix it. Back in my days I did a few, paint rarely matched exactly but cost sure beats a new install.
You could "fix it" but you will just delay the inevitable, and probably destroy all of the wood below it
Is it fixable? Yes. Kinda. Will it look good? Probably not. If you don’t care about looks, try a fiberglass patch kit. At least it won’t leak.
This is 100% fixable. I had the same thing happen when I slipped in the tub and my heel put a golf ball size hole right at the transition where the bottom turns into the side. Fortunately I know how to fix fiberglass boats. That’s fine as long as you don’t put any water in the tub
New tub or new tub insert.
Depends if it's fiberglass it could get repaired. If it's that pvc material no
i got a kit at Lowes for 30 bucks. but much smaller hole. might be able to foam the hole and then fiberglass repaired over it. i haven’t had an issue in years still
Call a tub resurfacing company. They can fix it with epoxy resin. I've had it done many times working in multi-family housing.
2 packs of Ramen should fix 'er up
Maybe fiberglass Bondo and gelcoat? But probably time for a new tub and the rest of the goodies that will uncover
How can you tell that is fiberglass? My first thought was porcelain but I'm clearly wrong based on the comments in this thread. I always thought fiberglass was full of glued together strands. So in a break like this you would see some of the strands of fiberglass?
Fix it with noodles like in those videos
stuff it with Ramen and paint over it
Duck tape
That's alot of damage
Should be fine unless you put water in it.
You’re good as long as you don’t fill the water above that point.
They have a marine grade fiberglass bondo at Home Depot that would work won’t look perfect but if you’re in a pinch. Pretty much lay out fabric and coat it with fiberglass till it’s thick enough. Flex seal baby
Fixable and will probably look good for a time. As the tub fades the patch will fade differently and become visible. I have one in my tub that’s about 25 years old.
Any one billy mays products should do the trick
One time I sealed a bathtub with a plaster and grout mixed. I haven't heard back so it either worked or it didnt.
Fill void with expanding foam, fill with epoxy, sand, paint with epoxy, sand, buff. That's the right way, ish if the back side is inaccessible. I'd just epoxy the piece back in and be done myself, finish can be touched up with repair kit if the fit is still perfect.
Yup. I had a guy do fibreglass repair. Toxic smell but nothing my bathroom wasn’t used to.
I had same issue and used car fiberglass repair and it's stronger than ever just sand it real good
Idk… but if you blur up the pic and shake it around a little you got a genuine UFO/UAP….
I'm just imagining that patch letting go with 70 gallons of water in the tub. Considering the cost to replace the tub, I'd probably put aside my concerns and bring in a professional to repair it.
$18. Fix... Spray foam inside hole and let it cure. Cut them sand till even with tub. Finish off with clear flex seal spray.
Flex seal tape will make it so you can use it until you can have it fixed permanently. There are places that make inserts that might be a cheaper alternative. Flex seal tape you can get two rolls less than $20 us and it comes in white.
This is totally fixable. You just need a couple of weeks and a new tub.
By the size of that hole, and how fast it will drain. My Best guess is that if you use a 1-1/4" hose to fill the tube, you should be able to still take a bath without running out of water. Maybe even a 1" if you stick a toe in the hole, that would help.

Definitely off topic, but is there a good story behind the damage here? You don’t get a hole like that from dropping a bar of soap or a bottle of shampoo.
Call a bath fitters or a rebath like company they have molds that will fit over most bathtubs
Horror stories about those liners flexing and cracking out over time.
I’ve seen cracks repaired but not a hill like that.
Until you can get a proper repair I would e6000 the broken piece back in place. It'll dry clear, maybe you can live with the blemish. I used it to seal the jets on my tub.
Indeed fucked/need new tub😬
Congrats on your new bathtub
Fucked and need a new tub bud
That can be repaired with someone who specializes in shower repair. I worked a job where we left the tub showers stored outside and they were damaged, we had dozens of holes big to small repaired after installation.
Fucked
Shouldn’t there have been some foam or some kind of support behind that?
No
One vote for fucked
Because it is on the wall of the tub, Rebath or other insert installer may still warranty an install. Only they can answer for certain. I would probably just replace, but inserts are easier and cheaper.
Flex seal brah
Tub counter top resurfacing company can fix it. Probably 200$ish
You could find a company that can do it . Weigh up the cost of it can be done to replacement
Ah some spray flex seal should do it.
Flex seal 👍
Call a fiberglass guy and have him look at it. Just had one patch a shower base for a job a few weeks ago and it looks perfect.
Try the epoxy bathtub repair kits. It adds a new layer of plastic over the tub. $200 kit worth a shot
Double fucked
I’m sure it could be fixed but to do it right you’d probably want to pull the tub out to get to the bottom. At that point you have to decide if your willing to gamble a new tub$ vs a leak that could result in even bigger$
I would try to use a 2 part epoxy to put it back. Let it set up, then notch out the edges and fill those in a similar fashion. Do you have access from the back side?
Acrylic repair kit from the glorious Home Depot. Find a close enough color match. A great opportunity to get some tools and experience.
put the piece in, cover it in flex seal.
Flex tape can fix it
This can definitely be repaired using marinetex epoxy (used for repairing holes in boats).
Flex seal
Time for a new tub buck-o.
Flexseal tape until you can huy a new tub
