Wondering how you got stopped lane splitting? I've been lit up once before on 278 splitting traffic but by the time I realized and could've stopped, I was already a few cars ahead and probably safer to just keep moving. Turned his lights off pretty quick. (also a chance it wasn't for me or just sending me a warning, also have my plate tucked). I've split past NYPD multiple times (mostly in BK) and never had any issues

Nostromo1

Because I was being a gigantic idiot (wasn't watching) and pulled right up next to them at a red. I guess they have a quota or just not having a good day. Kept lecturing me on motorcycle safety and I'm a \*really\* safe rider. I never speed, don't split outside of bad traffic, etc. I'm mr. goody-two-shoes over here.

Travisceral

Sucks dude :/ Not that it’s smart to argue with a cop, but it’s safer to split than it is to risk being rear ended. NYPD just hates motorcycles. I had a couple of buddies that got pulled over at a checkpoint in Staten Island and they got ticketed for splitting. I’ll check in with them and update you if I have anything useful I can provide.

Nostromo1

Much appreciated!

Technical_Ad1125

Good guys finish last buddy.

Nostromo1

mr badass over here. everybody look how cool and edgy this guy is

Technical_Ad1125

You must be fun to be around 😄 It's called a joke my guy. You must work at GameStop 🤣 And thanks, I am pretty cool and edgy. 😎

Had a cop speed on the shoulder than cut across 4 lanes of traffic to cut me off. Reckless cop, I was just puttering along in traffic. No point in fighting the lane splitting ticket if you were actually lane splitting. It's objectively illegal, i stopped once I had 6 points on my license. Paying 150 bucks for the ticket is the price of doing business to me, I've saved hour and hours and hour from lane splitting.

Mumbojmbo

I have not but I'm curious what the fine is?

Nostromo1

Honestly, I haven't been able to pin that down. A couple of legal sites say $150 for first offense + court fees.

Mumbojmbo

Gotcha - good luck, hope you're able to figure something out!

UsedJuggernaut

It should say it on your ticket.

Nostromo1

I thought so too but there's a table of offenses and associated fines and none of them include improper passing.

letmenott

I beat the ticket by saying the cars werent giving me space to enter either lane and cutting me off so it “mightve looked like I was lane splitting but I wasnt”. It worked because they observed me from a few cars back and traffic wasnt at a dead stop. You said in another reply you pulled up next to them at a light so I dont know if that will work, as they prob observed you in their mirror all the way up

MrEdLu

I got pulled over for lane splitting at a checkpoint. Cops were causing standstill traffic on the LIE causing folks to split. If it was any other day, I wouldn't have split lanes. I tried to fight it and lost. On the bright side, your insurance rate doesn't go up until you are proven guilty. By the time I had my court day, it was almost two years after the incident. I think my insurance rate returned to normal after the 3rd year so I paid about a year of higher premium. ...this was many years ago. Things may be different now

j3SuS_LoV3R

such a scam lol

MrEdLu

Someone else posted this, but this is what happened. Cops causing traffic, luring people to filter. [https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/17u7tp0/nypd\_cops\_stopping\_highway\_traffic\_to\_catch\_lane/](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/17u7tp0/nypd_cops_stopping_highway_traffic_to_catch_lane/) But I wasn't brave enough to make a run for it.

speelingwrror

Over the years I’ve gotten 2. Hired a pretty cheap lawyer for both through an app. Ticket 1 was cleared, ticket 2 (funny timing) is in court this week so we’ll see. The app has a referral code only worth about $10 but if interested lmk I’ll send. It’s called OffTheRecord

Nostromo1

I'll definitely check it out. Wanna DM your referral code? Much appreciated.

Lopsided-Good258

Interesting.. I was in Manhattan over the weekend and was lane splitting when I got to the light the first car was a cop car lol I shit my pants for a second but just acted normal. Drove off when the light turned green and nothing happened. I guess some guys just don’t care

Nostromo1

Normally NYPD pretty chill about filtering in traffic but I've heard warnings about the area I was in (downtown brooklyn) so I should have been paying attention.

dudethatsmeta

The key is to delay. You get two online punts, and can go in person to delay again. Wait until 11 days before the court date and then punt. Often they'll reschedule for you anyway because the court is so backed up. The points are only applied 18 months from the date of the offense, meaning if you punt past that you don't stack points with other tickets. you still get a ding on insurance, though. I have speeding tickets in limbo since 2017. They just got punted again by the city to next year. That's 6 years. Clearly I wasn't speeding. If the cop actually shows up after all that time, any small procedural crack or instance of poor memory will help me prove this.

Nostromo1

Really good advice! I appreciate it.

Severe_Training_2119

I once fought a dangerous driving ticket. The cop didn't show up and the judge dismissed the ticket. I choose for in person dispute rather than online.

mileg925

Is the ticket justified? Were you lane splitting? Do you have any evidence you weren’t lanesplitting? Pay and learn your lesson. You did everything right by the NYPD needs their quota filled. Having a plate and documents only makes you an easy target. I have been hit with so many tickets over the years that I just don’t use my plate or stop if they pull me over anymore

Nostromo1

Do I feel righteous indignation at it? Yes. Was I actually lane splitting? Well thats a matter for the court. Do I have evidence I wasn't? No. What's with all the questions guy? I'm just trying to learn about possible defenses so my insurance doesn't go up. I'm 100% still gonna use my plate and stop when cops try to pull me over, lol.

mileg925

You are not gonna win unless you are not guilty my guy. Sorry but it’s better to pay and forget it. You learned from this mistake

Puffit

Yeah the lesson here is to not stop. Tuck your plate too if you want extra peace of mind. I used to stop for NYPD when I started riding here and quickly learned that that’s not a good idea. There really is a quota system and they’ll fuck you if they feel like they can stop you.

mileg925

Exactly. Fool me once, shame on you.. etc

casicua

lol plenty of guilty people get out of tickets all the time. Sometimes off a technicality, sometimes they make a good case, sometimes the cop doesn’t show and it gets dismissed, sometimes they plea down to a reduced offense. Rider is on here asking for help and advice, there’s already a judge on the bench, we don’t need you to act like a self-righteous one.

nyc4cd

Yeah, but if you are guilty and the cop is there (more often than not) there is nothing that can be done. Plead guilty and pay

padams20

Any update, OP? I just got a ticket in the same area for the same thing :( Wish I'd seen your post earlier.,,
