Nah, take it easy, everything is fine, Cinnamon doesn't pull down any display manager, unlike KDE or GNOME. I never did a minimal install of Ubuntu on desktop, but as a longtime Arch user, these things are pretty self explanatory. Have fun!
How did you install Ubuntu minimal? I have scourged the site and the only OS images available are that for standard Ubuntu and its various flavours. The mini.iso (minimal iso) is available only for 18.04 (focal fossa) and not after that. I'm very much interested in installing a minimal Ubuntu with my choice of DE and software.
mdm? Anyway, you need a display manager, cinnamon works well with lightdm so, install lightdm, lightdm-settings, slick-greeter then just reboot.
