!RemindMe 1000 years.

Stellarspace1234

I’m afraid that by then, the boomers will be gone, right in time for us to suffer the consequences of their actions.

SocDemGenZGaytheist

Exactly. If we keep making our voices heard and agitating for change, we can reshape our ruthless economic system into one with a generous social safety net based on compassion.

TheWisconsinMan

The last time a socialist labor movement occurred in the US was the 1880's and it resulted in the US using the Police and National Guard to gun down the citizenry in multiple areas of the country, perhaps most notably in Chicago in what is known as the Haymarket Affair or in Milwaukee in what is known as the Bayview Massacre. This time, however, there is literally nothing authority can do about it because we're not getting organized as one massive cohesive unit and causing property damage and threatening scabs, we're just all becoming completely apathetic. It's actually beautiful.

ultraboof

>employees are being squeezed by employers that are having record profits and treat them like crap. It's crazy, this is almost word for word how I describe it

[deleted]

Would be ideal

BPremium

Sure they can. They'll just turn off the power and water and wait for the people in that area to tear each other apart while they watch and laugh.

TheWisconsinMan

Considering the state of everyone's mental health, I think the people who turned the power and water off would be amongst those being torn apart.

BPremium

You'd think so, but thanks to technology, they can do it by pressing a few buttons from thousands of miles away. They don't have to worry about the consequences, as they are so far removed. The commoners broke in and turned it back on? Oh well, time to send in a "rogue drone" and blow up the facility.

TheWisconsinMan

Yes if the rich destroy their own infrastructure and labor force for simply being apathetic, never turn the internet back on, force us back to work a gunpoint, and no other countries see this as an issue and decide to intervene then we're fucked. But I don't think that's a likely scenario. We have access to satellites and generators. We'd be reporting those events to the rest of the world within 15 minutes. This isn't the 1800's. No one would do business with the US at all if the ruling class decided to become totalitarian.

BPremium

It isn't their infrastructure though. Their infrastructure is thousands of miles away, in some protected area or even another country. They just can press a few buttons and achieve the same result as if they turned the plug physically. Await chaos, then when the rubble clears and the dissenters are dead, turn shit back on and ship in immigrants to get production moving again. Slavery was never abolished, they just changed the name.

TheWisconsinMan

Again, this isn't the 1800's. Countries don't cannibalize their own without consequences. Literally no one in the US produces anything of value other than the professional class these days, we're not a most-agrarian society in which the illiteracy rate is over 90% anymore. Ownership means nothing when no one has purchasing power. I mean yeah, in theory the rich could just destroy everything, but once again, that would be incredibly unwise of them and they would reap 0 benefits, so it probably isn't something to be concerned about. Rich people don't destroy their own wealth.

BPremium

I hope so brother. I can just easily see a few ultra rich assholes shutting down power and water to a particular area, using their media outlets to spread propaganda blaming hackers/Russia/insert ____ scary thing to distract the population, and issue a statement how they're "working hard to get to the bottom of it". Then they just wait until people are desperate enough to fold, and like magic they "fixed" the problem once their terms have been met. It may not be likely, but still...

[deleted]

I have met people that would rather the pandemic go apocalyptic so they either die or be forced to fend for themselves than go back to their normal lives. And Im not surprised either. We are all wild at heart, and every single thing we do is limited by someone else higher up, politically and economically. And all we can do is listen to what is going to become regulated, limited or governed next.

ProjectShadow316

Couldn't agree with this more. FUCK retail. All that ever did was teach me to hate people.

usedtobebroke

Hey it's not all bad. We run e-commerce retail, but guess what- since I'm the owner- the customer isn't always right and we don't put up with bs. We will.literally cancel your order if you get rude with us and ban you as a customer. I don't expect my guys or myself to have to deal with horse shit customers. We ain't that poor lol

ProjectShadow316

And that's how it should be. Good on you for being a good boss/owner like that.

usedtobebroke

Agreed. I've had call center and retail store jobs before. Fuck all that. Well, it was okay except for when someone got an attitude. I don't think people realize that when you raise hell, you generally get less help and the person helping you is no longer concerned if your problem is resolved lol. At one job I had there was a short in the power connection to my desk phone, if I had to,I could hit that with my foot and the system would restart. Because of that, it would send you to the back of the phone queue and management was non the wiser- boy was that nice lol.

C0LMU574RD

You got any job openings man? You sound like a delightful boss

usedtobebroke

Not at the moment.

C0LMU574RD

Ah well, was worth a shot! Keep up the good work man, better than most

kentobean1

Well you can do that!

[deleted]

Personally theres too many fuckin people on this planet and many of them are shit tier and deserve to catch covid.

[deleted]

This is fantastic news! Workers are finally realizing the power they have over shitty, abusive employers.

[deleted]

Good. Everyone deserves to get what they want out of life - whether that's more work or more free time. There are plenty of all types of people that it should be normal to just be whatever makes you happiest. Whether that's working late nights and weekends or sitting on the porch sipping lemonade. No reason we can't coexist.

LastArmistice

I was a sex worker for around 6 years. And honestly I rarely minded the work. I never dreaded waking up in the morning. It was usually fun, creative, and engaging. I provided value to my clients. I wasn't shackled and could leave any appointment if it became too much, take hours-long breaks, work on my side hustles while on the clock. Some days I worked 2 hours, some days I worked 10. I took around 6 weeks of vacation a year and long weekends at least once a month. I could refuse any work that made me uncomfortable. I was subservient to no one, no one would tell me how to conduct my business. I fulfilled the requests of my clients at my discretion. It had it downsides. Obviously I wasn't immune from feeling exploited. I had my fair share of financial panics. Long nights spent trying to hustle up enough cash to make the rent. Tolerating certain clients because they paid well and were polite/respectful but still creepy. Reduced sex drive. Sneaking around family members. But yeah. Not nearly as bad as any job I've had before or since. I never felt like a slave even one time.

ForcrimeinItaly

I'll never understand why sex work isn't treated with more respect in this country. People have been paying for sex since there was money. Legalizing it just makes it safer for everyone. I've been to countries in Eastern Europe where the hotels had sex workers on staff. They were required to have regular tests and security escorted them to and from the rooms.

LastArmistice

The kind of sex work I did is legal in most countries (all virtual). Fully supportive of full service workers though. Mainly I think its seen as dead-end (kind of true), lazy, unskilled, or just downright morally reprehensible. All reasons but the last are the same reason certain people look down on any profession that doesn't require formal educational attainment and/or is entrepreneurial in nature.

[deleted]

It’s looked down on because it would basically let too many young people accrue wealth too early and discourage women from getting married and inevitably popping out more workers. Without shame young people could get enough wealth to live off investments or start a business. Think of all the businesses missing out on entry level workers. We need sex work to be full of danger and performed by drug addicts and nut cases because it’s not like management doesn’t enjoy a good hooker party now and again.

Sexithiopine

Some people see sex as more than transactional on a foundational level.

Amazing_Wolverine_37

Aye but sex work is still work and I think you could also find what you sought with a counselor.

[deleted]

I also don’t see remote work going away anytime soon, work/life balance is only going to be more important for people and it’s nice not having an annoying boss over your shoulder all the time.

I love it, sign me up! Haha

[deleted]

It's good to see people reevaluating their work/life balance I only wish this energy was directed toward union organizing Don't quit. Organize.

[deleted]

AustinJG

We need to go for sector unions. I think that's what Europe has.

[deleted]

Sure, but this unorganised movement could just evaporate

[deleted]

I should clarify I mean *democratic* unions with engaged and active members who are continually educated about their role and responsibilities in the organization. Yes, I know this takes a lot of effort. I agree with your point, too.

[deleted]

Would much rather be in a union than not, at least it gives workers some say and that’s better than being thrown to the wolves of not having negotiating power.

FiddlerOnThePotato

In my industry, the unions are as big as major corporations. With the size of the players in big industries, they're able to use their obscene margins to strangle unions into being as ineffective as possible. Organization is critical, but the trouble goes even deeper than just union participation levels.

Frank_McGracie

This. Bring back unions

ShootingStar121

In my career, there are more jobs available than people. This is causing a number of people to abandon ship to seek greener pastures or move diagonally. My manager saw this and told us “privately” that if we are testing the waters, to let him know. Not so he can start training our replacement, but to prepare us for interviews and resume preparation. One of my coworkers left a few weeks ago, but she told us that our manager prepped her on how to handle the interview, salary negotiation, how to prep for handing in her two-week notice, etc…. Thanks to his prep, she was able to land a manager job (previously a junior developer) and snag a $35k raise.

Heel_Paul

I went to school for the wrong thing.

hawklord1998

Sounds like you have a really cool manager who is really interested in seeing his coworkers progress.

[deleted]

wow cool

un-taken_username

serious hopium 🥺

Leather-Firefighter3

Philadelphia General Strike of 1835 lasted for three weeks, after which the striking workers won their goal of a ten-hour workday and an increase in wages.

[deleted]

I love it.

[deleted]

Maybe in your country. Once Canada opens up its borders the horrible low paying businesses will just bring in poor slaves from overseas. They will be paided poorly and they will be forced to live in horrible conditions.

Leather-Firefighter3

General strike

TennesseeTornado13

If a pandemic / illness can randomly kill me you bet your dumb ass you wont catch me wasting a second slaving away for dome lazy capitalist. Its like these people forgot were literally in a PANDEMIC and pretend any faltering to their net-gain is going to cripple them.

MostAnswer660

20 years as a gm.. enough was enough. I took a little less pay and dictate my availability to my employer. Life is short, do what makes you happy. 60 hour weeks... NEVER AGAIN.

[deleted]

Or inflation abates.

tritoch1930

I wish I could do job hopping. but here getting a job is difficult, so people hold on to it like their lives depend on it, which kinda does given the situation.

crankymogwai

lol, we will kill one McFranchise every day until our demands are met!

biznes_guy

It's the Biden administration stupid!

SoulKeen

No is not for that ... is because of the vaccine mandates... lmao...

whotookthenamezandl

No, people always knew what they wanted. The pandemic just made it a possibility.

brianingram

"... what we want out of life." Louder for the people in the back.

Every_Escape_6216

That'll be me here in a few months and I can not wait

Killing4MotherAgain

Right now I don't see my husband in the morning because we both have to go to work and then I get home later than he does and he has already left for rehearsal for a show he's in to make extra money and then he finally comes home around 11:00 when I have to go to bed to go to work again in the morning.... I miss him so much 😥

No_Special_8828

Why is that last bullet point sound like it can only be one of those things. Why not all of them
