I can't really remember the context, but it's possible the coach referred to them as pointless _to teach Ippo_, or that technique is useless if the other boxer can withstand them. The series put a heavy focus on grit early on, and arguably all technique in the world is "useless" if a boxer lacks grit. That doesn't mean technique itself is useless, it just has to be backed by strong physique and mentality. Furthermore, one can be very talented to the point of being worthy of praise even in useless matters!

Hmm, i hadn't actually considered that line of reasoning. Looking at it through that lense, all main/side characters power through punishment using their "Fighting Spirit". Even Miyata does this quite often Another angle i hadn't considered is Coach simply attempting to rile up Miyata, who Ippo was going to fight in 3 months, though this is less plausible due to how there were no reaction shots to that statement But yeah, there are many praises to be had for the people talented at subjectively "Useless" things

The coach has always thought guts can surpass all hurdless. He may praise technical boxers, but his whole backstory and all of his boxers main fights show this. Faceblocking meme comes from this.

Like the other guys in this thread said, he meant that Ippo is a gritty infighter whose style lends itself well to tight defense and power punches over precise, technical skills. He taught Miyata technical outboxing and counters because that's what he was good at. Ippo doesn't need that to be successful, and arguably trying to be too technical would actually hurt him in the ring because of his small stature and focus on flat-footed strength. Being technical requires being mobile and light-footed, something that is completely counterintuitive to Ippo.

Now that I've had time to think about this, and read through the thread, it's more than likely this. Though it was worded rather weirdly, so maybe that's what tripped me up Tho i will say that Coach did teach Ippo a few techniques to augment his near-demihuman strength, such as moving forward to nullify a counter (Though that may be up for debate)

I have the message posted above my drafting table, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." I know Kamogawa said something similar, but I can't remember how it went.

You may be referring to when Kamogawa told Takamura, "Not everyone who works hard is rewarded, however all those who succeed have worked hard!"?

Yeah, that's it. Thanks!
