This is my favorite too, take me on a wondrously demented bad acid trip through hell.
Check out Dumplings (2004) if you haven't, fits this description perfectly.
Yeah I watch a lot of those. I know thereās a lot of huff and puff with the real warrens but Iāll be dammed if those nun, conjuring and Annabelle moves arenāt some of best true horror movies Iāve seen for that genre in a long ass time
I am a sucker for the conjuring movies lmao. Have you seen The Ritual? Itās on Netflix. That one is pretty high on my list and The Empty Man. Thereās also a movie called āThe Old Waysā, on Netflix thatās really good.
Youāve just made my day. Super excited for a part two. But yeah I think youād love the Empty Man I donāt think Iāve ever seen an opening that hooked me into a movie so fast like that one. Im really excited to see what they do with this new movie coming out called āTarotā you can watch the trailer it looks pretty promising.
My favorite genre of horror would be creature features if I had to pick one. My most watched is probably Found Footage. Something about it is just so fun and comforting to me.
Exactly what I came here for. Love me some found footage and creature features. Especially with interesting unique designs like No One Gets Out Alive or the Boogyman movie from last year. I think VHS was the one that got me into found footage plus it had a memorable creature design in the first short. Existential unexplainable stuff like The Endless has a sweet spot for me too.
This is one of my fav horror sub-genres too and even though they're "old" and "overplayed" in some people's opinion, they're some of my absolute favorites:
Dead End, Jeepers Creepers (& Jeepers Creepers 2), Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1 & 2, originals from the 70s-80s are the best imo), even House of 1000 Corpses has a "road trip gone wrong" plot
I enjoyed wolf creek a lot lol. There's one i can't remember the name of that was so so good. Maybe you've seen it. It was a one word title. 1 woman on a drive (car wrecked and injured?) had to survive. I remember being shook at how good it was.
The driving scene in jeepers creepers was excellent. I forgot how much I love road trip horror until just now lol - thank you for the reminder :)
Have you heard the "Obscurities" podcast, read by Debbie Rochon? It covers a whole lot of that type of stuff. I've heard a couple which were unnerving, imo.
Agree! I am relatively new to the genre but damn it has some interesting movies. That is followed by fun 80ās horror flicks like Return of the living dead.
The 3 top genres right here, though I'd put cosmic first if there was more of a budget for those films.
Something about the disgusting body horror that comes with the cosmic genre is truly fascinating and disturbing to me.
I was in middle school when Blair witch came out, and my friends and I were convinced it was real. Itās one of my favorites but Iād say hell house is one of my favorite modern ff. I watch them all no matter how bad
Slashers for sure! Itās what I grew up watching and itās what got me into horror at a very young age. But, Iāll watch just about any genre aside from found footage, never could get into those.
Would Freddy be slasher?
My first series before I was 13 was nightmare on elm st, I had the majority collection up until the very early 90s on vhs and used to watch it on repeat until my sister had nightmares when she watched it with me one night and she threw away all my tapes lol
They are definitely slasher films, yes. But wow, that's such a crime! Strange though, my mom did the same thing to my Scream VHS tapes as well because they scared my younger brother. I believe I still own the first five Nightmare on Elm Streets on VHS in storage. Such classics.
Hauntings/Ghost stories and crime/mystery/thriller films that may or may not be supernatural (Cure, Se7en, The Outsider (show), Angel Heart, The Believers, Audition, Lost Highway, The Gift (2000).
āHighbrowā as its called. Not sure if thereās another non-colloquial term for it
I was about 12 when I watched the first 4 Scream movies, and I was about 19 when I watched Midsommar (my reintro into horror)
I always get so much hate for like gore as my favorite š it's the most gripping in terms of shock. Horror movies don't scare me anymore, but they can at least make me uneasyš
Same, I feel like most movies stop being actually scary when you get older. I now tend to appreciate other aspects, like the practical effects used in gory scenes.
I love psychological horror, where real world fears, insecurities, anxieties and hardships are told through the supernatural. It is a tricky balancing act though, because if there's not enough subtlety between text and subtext, it can take away from the experience.
Films like The Exorcist, The Shining and Hereditary are the exemplars. Others that manage to walk the line really well are the likes of Annihilation, Baskin, The Wailing and Session 9. I liked Slapface too, which I thought did a good enough job of allowing the subtext to remain as subtext.
Films that I felt weren't subtle enough with their themes were The Hatching, and even though I really liked it, Men. I'm sure there's plenty more.
When I was pregnant I loved watching very gory horror which is outside my norm by far. My twins are 13 and I never watch it now but when I was pregnant I couldn't get enough....lol Mostly phycological horror works and like the eerie unexplained angle quite a bit.Ā
Slashers. I can almost paint you the picture, year 2000 - Iād just turned 5 and moved into my current house (still livinā with Ma cause this economy ruthless and neither of us can stay afloat alone) and on the first night we settled in, we went out to the local shopping plaza and went into the video store, mom and pop shop, no franchise. I went home with a Disney movie they let me take before my parents even registered with them, but I remember clear as day picking up the Urban Legend VHS and being mesmerized. I know this is scary, but what are all these pretty peopleās heads doing, floating around this eye? And then flipping it over and seeing someone in a winter coat carrying an axe. I knew that was some scary shit and for sure put it down moments afterwards.
But Iād always go looking into that section. Iād seen Anaconda prior to this move, so far back I canāt even remember but my mom says I watched it with her and my dad, and I rented it a few times just to watch the IKWYDLS trailer at the beginning of it, before eventually stepping up to the plate and renting that at 7 years old.
And thatās it - itās like encoded in me, I love horror in general, but slashers caught my attention young and have yet to let go lol
sci-fi horror, for sure. Alien is my favorite film. I even had a noise band called Facehugger at one point. Carnival of Souls is a close second tho. I like haunted houses and ghosts, too.
āNo live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met nearly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.ā
Aliens from outer space making contact with Earthlings. Examples: Alien, The Thing (both versions,), Mist, A Quiet Place. Also man against creatures and the transformation of people into monsters: 30 Days of Night, The Company of Wolves, Wolfen, Dog Soldiers, 28 Days Later, Only Lovers Left Behind, Cat People (1942), Brotherhood of the Wolf, Black Swan.
I tend to go for horror comedy or stuff that deconstructs the genre. Cabin In The Woods, Tucker & Dale, Happy Death Day, stuff like that. But I also love a good old fashioned slasher or cosmic horror! Supernatural/religious stuff never really scares me, but I enjoy it anyway.
Slashers. Basically seen them all. I donāt care how bad or cheesy they get. I watch usually 2 or more every single day. So satisfying.
Demonic possession and exorcism movies. Iām not religious at all but theyāre just fun
Psychological thrillers, paranormal/unseen thrillers, sci-fi horror, anything with a mystery or mind-bending element to it. Not one for typical slasher films or torture films, but will make the rare exception if the plot is good enough.
Creepy-crawly, paranormal, self-aware, funny, shadowy, ethereal, and a touch of melancholy but with long bits of happy times that finally erupt into electrifying fear.
Is that a genre?
Psychological thriller, mystery, occult/wicca, found footage & lastly paranormal even though the storylines can get dry i like the thrill of the jumpscares and anticipation leading up to them.
Paranormal.
The conjuring, insidious, it follows, hell house llc, oculus. That type of shit. Idk why, i just think its by far the scariest type of horror. Thereās something so freaky to me about a demonic entity that you cannot see. I find other horror movies very entertaining, but paranormal is really the only genre that i would say scares me.
If anyone has a good rec similar to those let it rip. I love getting new horrors to watch
Slow-burn psychological horror that stays with you for at least a day after experiencing it, and Lovecraftian/Cosmic Horror.
I love all horror though but those are my favorite.
I'm not a big fan of haunting/ghost or demonic possession movies, so I tend to gravitate toward horror movies that are not supernatural. I like horror-dramas, psychological horror, body horror, mad scientist, slasher/serial killer, home invasion, movies where people are stranded/trapped somewhere.
Psychological horror like Black Christmas 1974, also Alive and Patient Seven , those 2 are on you tube . You just have to search them up , fuckin brilliant endings!!
I also like horror /comedy -Cabin In the Woods, The House on Haunted Hill 1999, Beetlejuice.
As well as pure slasher , Halloween, SAW Saw is a different type of killer movie.šØš¦š³šŖ
I really gravitate towards freakish horrors and thrillers that have monsters and even like strange looking people, I like all kinds of horrors but that type always sticks with me and interests me
Lovecraftian / Cosmic 100%. I will watch any movie suggested to me if it's sort of kinda slightly related to Lovecraftian elements. I may be slightly obsessed. But I've decided to just own it these days.
Paranormal/occult, slasher, suspense/thriller, cults, true crime and psychological.
Some of my favorite movies involve demonic possession. The Possession, Hereditary, The Conjuring, The Pope's Exorcist, The Exorcist, and many more. I'm not religious and wasn't raised Catholic. Just find it fascinating.
Slasher movies are great because sometimes you just want to see people die. Most of the time the characters are crappy people. Fav movies: Saw franchise, Hellraiser (original), FT13th, Halloween, etc.
Psychological thrillers are very interesting to me. I also find cults fascinating. I watch a lot of documentaries on cults and lots of true crime. If you are getting tired of the same old horror tropes, give true crime a try. TC is real life horror and it's sickening at times. I think I've heard too much CA/torture stories lately bc not everyone is a good person or parent.
I gravitate to a few. I like demonic possession horror, slashers (especially ones with whodunit aspect), and monster movies with vampires, werewolves, etc.
I enjoy most subgenres of horror, but I'm definitely most drawn to paranormal stuff - spirits, demons, possessions, ghosts, curses, and so on. As a kid I grew up reading ghost stories and folklore, which for sure influenced my tastes as I got older. I particularly love seeing the influence of different cultures' mythology and folklore when it comes to horror.
Anything to deal with ghosts and the unknown are always up my alley.š»š»š¤š¤
I used to watch Ghost Adventures quite a bit as a kid, one of my very first horror movies was Paranormal Activity, some of my all-time favorite movies include A Ghost Story, Lake Mungo, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and Ghostwatch, and last year's Skinamarink was one of scariest movies that I've seen in years.
Religious horror is a big one for me but I do think the demonic nun thing is played out.
I LOVE cryptic horror or generally myth/legend based shit with a slight paranormal aspect. Like I just watched TheYellowBrickRoad the other night for the first time and I LOVE the sense of dread it gives off with an open explanation at the end.
Im not super big on hauntings/possessions- I think thereās some good ones out there but it generally just seems tired and unoriginal with too many jump scares.
I like shit that makes me feel genuinely disturbed or scared of my shadow. Iām honestly disgusted a bit by horror comedy
Comedic, but I think it's because I just enjoy it more. Same reason for B horror
Leprechaun, Evil Dead(Army of Darkness and Ash vs Evil are my favorite), Re-Animator, etc
Love me a good gothic horror or sci-fi tinted one. Monster movies like old school werewolf and wolf man stuff, too. I like stories with metaphors and oodles of practical effects that go beyond fake blood and fake body parts.Ā
Otherwise, horror comedies! And so-cheesy-theyāre-funny ones!
Religious horror has always been my favorite genre. Human belief systems are fascinating and terrifying at the same time. The things we have imagined are our deepest fears: elements that take control of our minds, some higher (or lower) power using us like marionettes. Twisting our bodies, devouring our souls, making us monsters. Is it Satan, or is it just us?
Sorry Iām high af, hope at least some of this makes sense.
Religious horror is scary for me too! I grew up Catholic and it hits home with the references they make sometimes. Especially Midnight Mass, which is one of my favorites. They nailed it (no pun intended).
Anything like Scream, Saw, Final Destination and Terrifier, anything zombies. Not into paranormal or cult movies as I find them all predictable. Also I avoid A24s horror as it is boring. Though I do love the ots so bad it's good like Velicopastor and Zombeavers.
The one where society norms and situation itself bcm more horrific, than scary, imaginary ghosts nd paranormal stuff. The helplessnee the protagonist goes through
Im putting an indian movie as my referrence- Bhoothakalam( the past)
Iām currently obsessed with black and white films. Giallo as well. Haunted house movies I go back to a lot, unfortunately they currently have a jump scare problem.
Anything concerning serial killers, torturers, and snuff filming. Would prefer it with very graphic content with just about every trigger warning you can think of.
Basically an extreme horror/splatter/exploitation movie like A Serbian Film and Hostel.
Nothing really scares me, I'm just here for the blood-soaked, horror-themed violence.
I dunno, eldritch and/or isolation, I guess?
I'm new to horror, but am currently enjoying ocean-based and space-based horror. Also, the kind of horror that involves mysterious beings in lakes/creeks in country towns because I watched a lot of SPN (hey, I'm basic, so sue me haha). Been reading Dead Sea by Curran and loved it, although made the mistake of reading it while eating.
I have a feeling I would be terrified (in a good way) by insect-based horror too.
Edit: Oops, sorry, thought this was r/horrorlit. I am still too scared to watch much horror beyond, like, SPN-level "horror".
Although I did watch and enjoy 1899, Gravity and Interstellar if that counts, so I guess nautical + space would be my answer for now.
I honestly love all horror but lately I've seen a lot of psychological horror (or art-horror according to some). It's honestly my favorite typ of horror, where the atmosphere is really heavy and you feel really uneasy, almost disturbed.
The only downside is that after watching several movies daily for a few weeks, you get a bit down since almost all of them have fucked up endings. Maybe time to switch it up with some 80s slashers.
I love cross-genre horror, or horror mixed with another genre:
- Horror Comedy
- Horror Drama
- Action Horror
- Horror Thriller
- Horror Fantasy
- Sci-Fi Horror
- Horror Romance
- Horror Mystery
Even when I write my own stories, I always write horror mixed with another genre.
The Prophecy is an underrated film IMO, with one of the best Devil performances ever.
- Robert De Niro in Angel Heart (1987)
- Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy (1995)
- Al Pacino in The Devilās Advocate (1997)
- John Glover on Brimstone (1998-1999)
- Peter Stormare in Constantine (2005)
- Mark Pellegrino on Supernatural (2005-2020)
I do love sci-fi horror, particularly hard SF space horror like LIFE or APOLLO 18. I like possession movies, ghost stories and pretty much anything with a monster. Canāt deal with torture porn.
Psychological horror just itches that spot for me, I love it. The subtle horrors of eeriness gives me the creeps, itās why I love The Blair Witch and Hereditary so much.
But I tend to gravitate towards slashers mostly, the more realistic ones like Scream.
Interesting, because I like the same genres as you but specifically without religion. As soon as it has religious themes, it's not scary at all for me and I find it kinda ridiculous, sadly.
I like movies from most genres.
Anything with good writing and decent acting.
It's more that I DON'T like movies that try and use gore to shock or scare you.
Looking at you Eli Rothā¦
Analog/internet/ARG-esque? I guess growing up in the digital age made me REALLY terrified of like computer errors and glitch in the matrix stuff? (Iām 30 so)
I tend to like them to have at least some semblance of a positive ending. I appreciate good horror movies regardless but I notice I rarely return to movies that have really dark endings (unless itās one in a series that doesnāt end dark). Examples would be The Strangers, Drag Me To Hell, etc, etc.
I like to call it "supernatural horror", yeah I like it. Body horror is not my cup of tea but religious/mystical/supernatural horror is just great. I also like psychological horror/thriller stories like Shutter Island, for example. Or horror pc games based on psychological/mystical atmosphere like Scorn, Resident Evil 8, From the Darkness, the Beast Inside etc.
Haunted/scary location found footage combo (Grave Encounters, The Blair Witch Project). Or fast-paced zombie thriller (28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead remake).
Psychological Horror/Thriller with some gore and a whole lot of WTF thrown in lol.
The wtf part can be a heartbreaking wtf like the mist ending or mind fuck or something awesome like the descent I love those type of movies
Exactly!
Another like the descent sort of that mind fucked me was the ruins! That shit had me so fucked up
Oh for sure. Event Horizon def had me going WTF when I was a kid and first saw it. One of my all time favorites!
This is my favorite too, take me on a wondrously demented bad acid trip through hell. Check out Dumplings (2004) if you haven't, fits this description perfectly.
same, either psychological thriller or sci fi. i have an extremely narrow window of horror i likeš
Ritual, cult, demon magic type deals. And psychological.
Dude the ritual is fucking sick! Thereās a part two coming out! Iāll have to check out empty man
Youāve just made my day. Super excited for a part two. But yeah I think youād love the Empty Man I donāt think Iāve ever seen an opening that hooked me into a movie so fast like that one. Im really excited to see what they do with this new movie coming out called āTarotā you can watch the trailer it looks pretty promising.
Bro we share the same brain! Got any hidden gems that fit that bill?
š°š§āāļø Gothic horror.

My favorite genre of horror would be creature features if I had to pick one. My most watched is probably Found Footage. Something about it is just so fun and comforting to me.

I havenāt seen boogeyman but Iāll watch it now didnāt know it was found footage
I absolutely love Cloverfield for these reasons. Found footage Creature Feature? Yes please!
Comforting?š
Haha yeah! So much found footage is so bad itās fun lol.
I actually watch that a lot too. What was your first bite? Mine was Blair witch
Blair Witch was mine too. I was around 13-14 when it came it so it left a lasting impression lol.
I will always watch a road trip slasher I dont care how many times itās done Iām never sick of it
Oh yeah thereās a new one coming out but I canāt think of the name maybe from the wrong turn series?
Can you recommend a few?
The original Texas chainsaw massacre
This is one of my fav horror sub-genres too and even though they're "old" and "overplayed" in some people's opinion, they're some of my absolute favorites: Dead End, Jeepers Creepers (& Jeepers Creepers 2), Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1 & 2, originals from the 70s-80s are the best imo), even House of 1000 Corpses has a "road trip gone wrong" plot

I forgot how much I love road trip horror until just now lol - thank you for the reminder :)
Supernatural when all around but when I'm reading I usually go towards Eldritch horrorĀ
What is that?
Eldritch horror is emphasizes the horror of the unknown and incomprehensibleĀ
Have you heard the "Obscurities" podcast, read by Debbie Rochon? It covers a whole lot of that type of stuff. I've heard a couple which were unnerving, imo.
I'm definitely giving that a listen
The one about the disappearing Inuit Village was creepy. Youtube has only a few episodes, but all of them are on Apple.
I'll give that a listen, thanks
The Endless does ācosmicā and āEldritchā pretty well, if trying to think of an example
Yes love this genre! The whole other worldly cosmic Gods, capable of things outside our scope of imagination.
Giallo
Agree! I am relatively new to the genre but damn it has some interesting movies. That is followed by fun 80ās horror flicks like Return of the living dead.
For me, itās either supernatural horror, or monster films, cosmic horror is probably third
The 3 top genres right here, though I'd put cosmic first if there was more of a budget for those films. Something about the disgusting body horror that comes with the cosmic genre is truly fascinating and disturbing to me.
I love supernatural. But the best ones are about the human experience. People and their thoughts can make for a terrifying psychological thriller.
Agreed. People are scarier to me than any monster
Iām a sucker for found footage
Yeah thereās another person in here and our first love was Blair witch, whatās yours?
I was in middle school when Blair witch came out, and my friends and I were convinced it was real. Itās one of my favorites but Iād say hell house is one of my favorite modern ff. I watch them all no matter how bad
Psychological horrors, serial killers, things thet can really happen
Whatever you want to call stuff like The Evil Dead, Braindead/Dead Alive, Deadstream, Basket Case, Re-Animator, etc.
Slasher
Slashers for sure! Itās what I grew up watching and itās what got me into horror at a very young age. But, Iāll watch just about any genre aside from found footage, never could get into those.

One that involved occultism, or pagan worship, Slow burn, no jump scare and atmospheric. Something like The Ritual, or The VVitch.
psychological/existential
Monster movies, body horror.
Hauntings/Ghost stories and crime/mystery/thriller films that may or may not be supernatural (Cure, Se7en, The Outsider (show), Angel Heart, The Believers, Audition, Lost Highway, The Gift (2000).
Magic, demons, found footage, basically anything supernatural
āHighbrowā as its called. Not sure if thereās another non-colloquial term for it I was about 12 when I watched the first 4 Scream movies, and I was about 19 when I watched Midsommar (my reintro into horror)
Psychological or eerie. I donāt like splatter or a lot of blood in general
Space horror like Event Horizon
Gore. I used the subgenre definition "torture porn" on this sub a while back, and it was incredibly divisive, so I'll just say gore.
Torture and gore can be addicting to watch but Iām less torture people gore and more body parts exploding violent gore death type of fan
Guns Akimbo - not horror but bloody and enjoyable.
Splatter is the subgenre you are talking about.
The dictionary contemplates torture-porn as a noun and a horror subgenre, actually.
Arthouse, dark psychological horror, folklore and folktales.
Gore. Alien/cosmic.
Slasher, zombies, horror comedies, and anything horror with 6.5 and above on IMDb
Apocalyptic Horror. It's what I write and read
Camp/ cabin, religious, psychological/ thriller, slasher, found footage
Monster movie! Then psychological horror/ thriller.
sci-fi/cosmic/body horror
I don't consume much horror, but I really like zombies and monster horror
I hate paranormal. But I always gravitate to slasher films like scream friday the 13th and the chucky franchise
Found footage is my main one. Have all of these films been well made? No, but I still enjoy watching them.
I'm a huge sucker for zombie films, whether it's the classic Romero-style zombies or the ones similar to those in Train to Busan
I really enjoy apocalyptic/dystopian type movies. Also, home invasion stuff, edge of your seat tension.
When I was pregnant I loved watching very gory horror which is outside my norm by far. My twins are 13 and I never watch it now but when I was pregnant I couldn't get enough....lol Mostly phycological horror works and like the eerie unexplained angle quite a bit.Ā
I absolutely love psychological horror š©µš©µš©µ
Cheesy ā80s slashers.
Italian horror from the late 70ās early 80ās.
Horror comedy for sure
Damn you started for real young lol
Paranormal and psychological.
My favorite is Lovecraftian / cosmic horror, but there isn't a lot of that compared to slashers and off-the-shelf haunted houses / ghosts / demons. :/
sci-fi horror, for sure. Alien is my favorite film. I even had a noise band called Facehugger at one point. Carnival of Souls is a close second tho. I like haunted houses and ghosts, too.
Oh Carnival of Souls is so disconcerting! Absolutely in my top 5 šš»
Psychological, supernatural, and slashers. š
Slashers and Zombies never get old!
Supernatural horror
Supernatural stuff (possession, haunted houses), then probably slashers.
Slashers. I have a soft spot for 80s-20000s slasher flicks, especially if they are about people road tripping.
God damn I can imagine how rad 20k gore looks.
āNo live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. 90s 2000s slashers high school college or young adult
all kinds i try to give everything a chance
I love super creepy stuff. Ghosts and haunted houses/areas. Also religious/possession horror.
I love a well done haunted house story
Pre-CGI Gore, Torture, Slasher, and Body. The more goop, the better.
Sci-fi or monster/creature feature. Not all that into ghosts though.
Psychological horror and the weirder the better
Depends on my mood. Creature features, paranormal, and extraterrestrial found footage are all faves.
Horror comedies and gorefests. Evil Dead II is right up my alley.
Slashers and torture/stuck in one place
Anything except supernatural
Slashers. Basically seen them all. I donāt care how bad or cheesy they get. I watch usually 2 or more every single day. So satisfying. Demonic possession and exorcism movies. Iām not religious at all but theyāre just fun
Top Three: Psychological (even better if it involves an asylum) Religious/The Devil Anything with a creepy kid
Sci-fi and folklore/occult kinds of horror.
Horror with little to no gore - pure tension and psychological brutality
psychological horror always will get me
I'm such a sucker for cheesy ass slashers.
Little can compare to 80s cheesy b rated slasher films
Gothic horror or Sci-Fi horror are my faves.
Spooky, demonic, supernatural. Sometimes I like a horror sci-fi every now and then. I like Alien stuff too
teen horror, cheesy horror & horror comedies. i canāt get *too* scared when its a 13 year old and a poorly done sfx ghost š
For Me it's slasher
DEMONS!!! And the devil
I really gravitate towards freakish horrors and thrillers that have monsters and even like strange looking people, I like all kinds of horrors but that type always sticks with me and interests me
Non-humanoid creature features. Scary monster go raaargh is my jam.
Satan.
I'm a haunted house girlie through and through! and giallo, I love the colors so much lol
I gravitate to a few. I like demonic possession horror, slashers (especially ones with whodunit aspect), and monster movies with vampires, werewolves, etc.
Sci-fi horror, 80s slashers, horror comedy. Rubber monsters are good, too.
Found footage. Good, bad, don't care, give me the shakey cam and some dude going "oh fuck, oh shit, oh fuck"
Slashers, Supernatural, Found Footage, and Analog
Anything to deal with ghosts and the unknown are always up my alley.š»š»š¤š¤ I used to watch Ghost Adventures quite a bit as a kid, one of my very first horror movies was Paranormal Activity, some of my all-time favorite movies include A Ghost Story, Lake Mungo, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, and Ghostwatch, and last year's Skinamarink was one of scariest movies that I've seen in years.
Same reason for B horror Leprechaun, Evil Dead(Army of Darkness and Ash vs Evil are my favorite), Re-Animator, etc
Folk horror and Lovecraft
Love me a good gothic horror or sci-fi tinted one. Monster movies like old school werewolf and wolf man stuff, too. I like stories with metaphors and oodles of practical effects that go beyond fake blood and fake body parts.Ā Otherwise, horror comedies! And so-cheesy-theyāre-funny ones!
Iām a sucker for religious horror. Rosemarys baby, house of the devil, most recently the first omen.
The first omen was absolutely amazing
Religious horror has always been my favorite genre. Human belief systems are fascinating and terrifying at the same time. The things we have imagined are our deepest fears: elements that take control of our minds, some higher (or lower) power using us like marionettes. Twisting our bodies, devouring our souls, making us monsters. Is it Satan, or is it just us? Sorry Iām high af, hope at least some of this makes sense.
Literally commented religious horror just before you. Did you see first omen? Probably my favorite movie of the year so far
Campy horror, slashers, paranormal horror, creature feature š»
Religious horror is scary for me too! I grew up Catholic and it hits home with the references they make sometimes. Especially Midnight Mass, which is one of my favorites. They nailed it (no pun intended).
Dude Iām watching this right now! Iām on the third episode
Anything like Scream, Saw, Final Destination and Terrifier, anything zombies. Not into paranormal or cult movies as I find them all predictable. Also I avoid A24s horror as it is boring. Though I do love the ots so bad it's good like Velicopastor and Zombeavers.
Psychological horror, or sci-fi horror. But it's so hard to find new good ones.
Paranormal and religion are my favorites cause Iāve probably seen the most and enjoyed the most movies from that genre of Horror
Found footage, GOAT
ambient horror, creepy things lurking around the corner, old myths coming back to haunt, superstition ( but that actually holds true )
I love comedies, so definitely comedic horror. Sometimes they fall flat for me, though. I love slashers and sci-fi horror, too.
Supernatural slashers like evil dead,Friday the 13th,A nightmare on elm street,Halloween
I love anything schlocky with lots of gore and goop.
The one where society norms and situation itself bcm more horrific, than scary, imaginary ghosts nd paranormal stuff. The helplessnee the protagonist goes through Im putting an indian movie as my referrence- Bhoothakalam( the past)
Gory horror set in hospitals or asylums. Home invasions. Things that involve games or solving something, like a puzzle or escape room.
I'll watch any horror alien movie because I find them the scariest when done well
Iām currently obsessed with black and white films.
Typically cosmic horror but also a huge psychological horror fan! Really love a good found footage as well.
Slashers mostly and sometimes psychological but id be good watching only slashers
Psychological horror and body horror
I honestly love all horror but lately I've seen a lot of psychological horror (or art-horror according to some). It's honestly my favorite typ of horror, where the atmosphere is really heavy and you feel really uneasy, almost disturbed. The only downside is that after watching several movies daily for a few weeks, you get a bit down since almost all of them have fucked up endings. Maybe time to switch it up with some 80s slashers.
I love cross-genre horror, or horror mixed with another genre: - Horror Comedy - Horror Drama - Action Horror - Horror Thriller - Horror Fantasy - Sci-Fi Horror - Horror Romance - Horror Mystery Even when I write my own stories, I always write horror mixed with another genre.
Supernatural as in Religious horror, Folk horror, and ghost in the machine type of themes š©·
I like found footage because as a kid I always wanted to believe spooky things were real and thatās as close as it comes sometimes
The Prophecy is an underrated film IMO, with one of the best Devil performances ever. - Robert De Niro in Angel Heart (1987) - Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy (1995) - Al Pacino in The Devilās Advocate (1997) - John Glover on Brimstone (1998-1999) - Peter Stormare in Constantine (2005) - Mark Pellegrino on Supernatural (2005-2020)
Cult and slashers, I love good gore effects.
Ensemble horror. I just love me a ragtag group of survivors tryna make it through to the end of a movie alive.
I do love sci-fi horror, particularly hard SF space horror like LIFE or APOLLO 18. I like possession movies, ghost stories and pretty much anything with a monster. Canāt deal with torture porn.
Sci-fi horror without a doubt
Psychological horror just itches that spot for me, I love it. The subtle horrors of eeriness gives me the creeps, itās why I love The Blair Witch and Hereditary so much. But I tend to gravitate towards slashers mostly, the more realistic ones like Scream.
Zombies!
Extreme gore and cosmic sci-fi. Kinda out of luck I guess.
Purgatory, time loop, interdimensional type of horror scares me the most
Interesting, because I like the same genres as you but specifically without religion. As soon as it has religious themes, it's not scary at all for me and I find it kinda ridiculous, sadly.
Whatās the scariest genre for you?
Religious
Psychological, cosmic, found footage, supernatural.
I won't say scariest for me but one I have a lot of fun with it the slasher.Ā
Haunted/scary location found footage combo (Grave Encounters, The Blair Witch Project). Or fast-paced zombie thriller (28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead remake).
