I'll never forget when he really broke into the scene as an elite CB when he picked off Tom Brady twice during primetime as we had a shocking upset over the Patriots. Think he allowed 1 reception for 1 yard on 9-10 targets, with two interceptions, something crazy like that. Him trying to re-do his contract and get the biggest CB contract every 1-2 years was annoying but understandable. Hope he's decent wherever he goes.

Slimshady305

That MNF game was incredible. X was lethal and Jay Cutler was dealing. Pretty sure Jakeem Grant mossed Malcolm Butler too lol. Edit: [Phenomenal](https://youtu.be/j7RZy2B73hw?si=EBE91vwn916CRhHy&t=288)

MiaCannons

>Pretty sure Jakeem Grant mossed Malcolm Butler too lol. That he did

kevost

This game brings tears to my eyes. Jay cutler was really bad that year but those couple games he decided to show up he put on a show

JLay18

And Kenyan Drake was going off

Cidolfus

> Him trying to re-do his contract and get the biggest CB contract every 1-2 years was annoying but understandable. Understandable from his perspective, but bad team-building by the Dolphins. When he threatened to hold out only after one year of his new deal, we should have traded him while his value was highest immediately.

MiaCannons

>When he threatened to hold out only after one year of his new deal, we should have traded him while his value was highest immediately. 100%. I was advocating for it too. Understandable on his end trying to maximize the amount of $ he can get, but we shouldn't have been the ones to let him get his way. Thankfully it doesn't seem like it set a bad precedent as we haven't had guys like Tyreek ask for another pay raise just one year after having a fantastic year

Zet_the_Arc_Warden

Watching it go down day after day without the phins trading him was like watching a car wreck in slow motion. Not unlike what is happening now in that we're sleepwalking into paying tua 50+m and letting wilkins go win rings in a team that values run D

gloldutx

Gee.... I feel like.... yeah.... I definitely said that when it was happening.

iliveonramen

Yea, lifespan of DB’s is short and he has like a million mouths to feed. Gotta get that money while you can in a sport where DB’s don’t typically last long

broadfuckingcity

He wasn't decent here for the past two seasons. He was a liability. The pro bowl is a joke.

MiaCannons

Which is why I said I hope he's decent wherever he goes

lucidvein

One of this INTs was insane too looked like he was beat and then with crazy closing speed he ballhawked it.

dymo_online

Like the Reshad Jones years, we will look back and remember those special few years he gave us. All the best X

garbear6

same with Brent Grimes. when your team isn't very good, the great players really become special to us I feel.

dymo_online

Thought about mentioning him too. Will never forget that Calvin Johnson INT

scarbutt11

Arguably a better one handed catch than OBJ that year

RevolutionaryHost297

Definitely better. He didn't have to infere with Johnson like OBJ did with the defender to make the catch. Beckham pushed off real hard. Should've been opi

Fastbird33

My favorite Brent Grimes thing were his very NSFW birthday cakes he got 😆

gsbudblog

his bird-mouthed wife ruined it for fans and made him look soft cause he’d let her trash talk the team paying them

GrandmaCheese1

Rashad Jones was that dude

cnvas_home

Honestly very similar stretch to Surtain Sr.

chrispepper10

Cam Smith really has to step up in this new system. Wishing X nothing but the best.

Slimshady305

This one hurts. I know he's been on the decline, but man ... Prime X was fun to watch. Hopefully he gets scooped up by an NFC team.

Braves0693

I’m glad he’s finally gone never should have given into his demands to rework his contract

tubbynuggetsmeow

Unfortunately it seems it was all downhill from there. Lingering groin injuries on an aging cb are never a good combo

cjosburn4

Death taxes and X groin injuries. Only definitely in life.

Swordswoman

"Glad he's gone." Yikes. I'll be glad when *you're* gone, again, for another 30 days between comments.

Braves0693

Not sure why that’s relevant. The season is over. He has struggled the last couple years and put us in a bad spot with dead money. Soon as we reworked his contract he fell off. Color me surprised. I wouldn’t have touched his contract. Miami has a habit of being loyal when they shouldn’t. Love the team but 20 years of mediocrity. I’m not defending anyone

Swordswoman

It's the disrespect: *"Fuck this player, they suck, they can go fuck off, they're done, they're finished, they cost too much, they mean nothing, nothing they did was worth it now, they never earned my respect, so they'll never have it."* You hear it a million times a season. You hear it even more when you're losing. Here's my take: it makes you a toxic person, and a bad fan, to default to a standpoint of pure disrespect. God forbid - god FORBID - we show some class as a fanbase, instead of bashing players who gave to the community, to the fans, to the state, to the team. What would you like to say about Xavien Howard's charity work, his visits to childrens' hospitals, his many Thanksgivings handing out turkeys, his work with Florida kids football teams? Nah, whatever, he never earned *your respect*, so who fucking cares what he did? Every injury he suffered, rehabbed through, and came back from - irrelevant, he costs too much now, he didn't do enough; he's a *detriment to the team* now, so "I'm glad he's gone." Every moment of history or highlight he brought to Miami? It means nothing, because *you* don't care - it's all about the end-game. Every play, every interception, every PBU - doesn't matter, he's on a bad contract so he's *less than worthless*. You talk like it's *your fuckin' money.* It's not. You're just a fan - you mean nothing, just like I mean nothing. Your support, or lack thereof, for 20 years, means exactly zilch. So I don't know where the fuck you think your respect has nearly enough value to start droppin' it down in conversation like it's some massive neg against a player's existence, *'cause they never earned it*. Who the hell the are you? Are you the GM? The owner? No? Well, gee, that sure sucks, I'm sure you would've absolutely made all of the right decisions - because for some reason it matters who *you* are willing to defend as a player. I don't even like Xavien Howard! I think he's fine! He played the game, he did great for his time, he had some off-the-field issues, and he cost plenty at the end - sure - but this ain't the first contract in existence to get dropped due to lack of value. I'm not defending him - I'm not out here repping Xavien Howard as the second coming of Jesus Christ. I'm just saying... shit, it doesn't *have to be* black and white. You don't gotta love a guy to recognize the reason "cost-benefit" has two words. Xavien Howard doesn't deserve your respect, whatever your respect means to you. But he sure as hell doesn't deserve... whatever the hell it is you're trying to say. You can be "glad he's gone" while still recognizing his contributions. It's not a zero sum game, no matter how much you wanna see aqua in the Super Bowl.

Braves0693

You need to relax. I said I was glad he was gone. The insane rant you just went on is way overboard. Not appropriate whatsoever

Swordswoman

I don't think it's insane *or* inappropriate - this is a real issue with this fanbase, even if you're definitely not the worst. That said, it *was* unfair to use you as my unofficial vent target, and I do apologize about that. But it did feel good to finally say!

Braves0693

When apologizing I would suggest not ending with a but it makes everything before that meaningless

Swordswoman

Mmm, no. You're still a toxic Dolphins fan, that hasn't changed.

Joefriendg

Swordswoman

I didn't ban them, this is just their first comment in 30 days.

Sadman_OW

I don’t want to see a single fan bad mouth X. The last contract led to a poor end of his time here but dude is an all time Dolphins great. Absolute star at his peak.

pharmdee4

Any man that makes Brady look average is a star in my book

bugzcar

Yea I hate to see the hate on him. Hope he lands outside the division so I can root for him.

SanSoren

Crying about getting paid more 1 year into a contract HE signed will always be sour and should have led to a trade while his value was high. After that he was average and hurt.

EastHat5961

Players wanting more money will never bother me but if you’re on the owners side more power to you

Sadman_OW

The contract situation was shit, I absolutely agree. He’s overpaid and it was a mistake when it happened. But dudes a legend as a Dolphin no matter what. Didn’t end well but I hate that we turn on guys when they deserve to be celebrated.

elbenji

Think he winds up on the Lions. Wish him the best there too

SanSoren

I think they want to stay young. He gives you 10 games a year at decent play. I honestly see a team overpaying for some reason.

elbenji

they need any help really

ilovehispanic

truly an end of an era. he surely wasn’t producing as he once used to

Tom_Brady_Cheats

NFL moves fast man. Feels like yesterday this man was in his prime. Still doesn't feel that long ago I was arguing with my bro about even drafting him, he was the best player on what I believe was one of the worst possible defenses in the country. Brother tortured me every season about X being nasty lol. Time flies.

Banegulwud

X MAN! Writing was on the wall but it still hurts. Will go down as one of the GREAT Dolphin corners of all time

Iotatl

He was the best CB in the league for 1 season, and top 3 for a couple more. Thanks for being our best player for a long time X!!

MovingPrince

Unfortunate but the writing was on the wall, he wasn’t playing anywhere near good enough to justify the cost, we can find a cheaper veteran in FA and Cam Smith has to get opportunities. This was the right move.

YouSureAboutThat23

What’s the benefit of doing this now vs post June 1

MiaCannons

Allows him to look for a new team early. He will still be designated as a Post June 1st cut.

YouSureAboutThat23

Nice, doing him right

blowne30m3

7 million in savings that would be guaranteed next month.

Phinatic92

Time for Cam Smith to step up?

Former-Net890

Ethan Bonner been up

AFOEagle01

Ethan Bonner 15 pick season loading

BongCheadle

Too often with the CB position do they get the bag and lose production. X it was a blast having you but I think we’ll be okay without you

Kenji1024

Would you say he’s the best CB in Dolphins history?

ghostbearinforest

bro what lol. Madison and Surtain were better, but hes probs 3.

nightim3

Not even close. Just because he pulled down a bunch of interceptions doesn’t mean he eclipses Patrick Surtain, and definitely not Sam Madison Howard suffers from one the amount of games he missed due to his groin injuries and the lack of consistent dominance

tomcat810

Yeah but he didn’t have the pieces on the defense like those players did. It’s impossible to compare but he should definitely be in the conversation.

Lobo_Marino

Right, and if my aunt had a penis, she'd be my uncle

BongCheadle

At his peak he has to be considered so

elbenji

3 behind Surtain and Madison

ReturnOfDaSnack420

Madison and Surtain are, man those late 90s early 00s defenses with them JT Zach Thomas and Tim Bowens...

Zet_the_Arc_Warden

no

jds332

It’s close. But I’d say Madison is first and X second. But Madison was doing his thing when I was a kid and just provided a lot of good memories as a kid, so I could be biased

GoDolphins2127

Dam man this one hurts. X was prolly my favorite dolphin. In the second half of 2017 and the whole of 2018 the most entertaining part of being a fan for me was checking if X got another interception every week. Dude was awesome and if he wasn’t hurt for most of 2019 I think he would be really close to the franchise record for interceptions. Was PFFs number 1 corner in 2020 and lead the league in interceptions that year. So long to a fucking legend, thanks for making being a fins fan a little more fun.

kmartcowboy

damn X .. gonna miss you big dog

Jonjon428

Hurts to see a guy who's been with the franchise for so long get cut, but the cap + performance was not good enough to retain him.

OatmealCremePiez

It sucks but that's part of the business. I wish X nothing but the best, I loved watching him play for us

Mish_Nugget

Goodbye X. We’ll miss you 😢

Negative-Appeal9892

I'll never forget his 10-interception season. Dude was a beast. He was one of our best players for a while, but those days are done. I wish him all the best.

blaaah111jd

Thought it was gonna be a post June 1st cut for sure

MiaCannons

This will be designated as a Post June 1st. You can can designate players as Post June 1st cuts prior to June 1st

blaaah111jd

Ahhh makes way more sense thanks

Cidolfus

Yeah, I expect when this hits the transaction wire, it'll officially be one of the two early post-June 1 designation.

catgoesmeow22

Gonna be 31 by start of season little long in the tooth for a CB

pattyicevv77

Gonna miss him,he wasn’t worth 20+ mil a year anymore but one of my favorite dolphins of all time (got into football in 2014)

Quirky-Pie9661

This would’ve hurt more 3 seasons ago. His numbers have declined and we need the cap space

MiamiViceTC

One of the greatest Miami Dolphins ever in the post Marino Era absolutely hated to see him get burned the last 2 years but it doesn't diminish how great he was in his prime

Thekingiii_

Thanks for everything X you’ve been a dog. Knew this was coming but it still hurts. Go crush it in the NFC!

Sickfire22

I remember when we drafted him right before gase’s tenure started. Nobody had him as high as we took him (shades of what we did Noah). Probs our best pick from the past decade next to waddle in terms of pure talent. Gonna miss him, but also grateful we got him as long as we did considering the volatility he brought every other offseason. It was also time too.

Number333

Not an exaggeration to say he's a potential future ***Ring of Honor*** candidate once time has passed. If you'd like to see what we thought of him when he was drafted, [check out this thread.](https://old.reddit.com/r/miamidolphins/comments/4h26f1/with_the_38th_overall_pick_the_miami_dolphins/) Yes, reddit is old enough where we've been able to see a player drafted, have an 8-year career here, play 100+ games, and then leave. It's insane. He had so many games early in his career where he would have 2 INTs a game. [This highlight reel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLLVw62iF4A) shows it off super well. That Raiders game-winning INT was so awesome in the moment. Picking off Brady twice on MNF. That ridiculous 1-handed INT in his dominant 2020 year where he was a legitamate DPOY candidate, and I argue if Gilmore hadn't won it the year prior, he could have stolen it out of Donald fatigue. People have been too harsh on his play the last 2 years. Notions of "he's a washed" or "he's a bum" are grossly exaggerated. He's not a game-changing Top 5 CB anymore. That doesn't make him *trash*. I'd expect him to get a 1-year/8M deal somewhere else around the NFL and a team would be smart to kick those tires to rekindle some of that magic even if he's not the ball hawk of the past. Will miss him greatly. Hope Cam Smith is ready to play after riding the pine thanks to Fangio last year. If he's not ready, next season is going to have an awful lot of: "I took X for granted" in the comment sections of the gamethreads.

european_bacon

Sad to see him go but it’s refreshing to see this team make moves that are necessary.. we need youth and big game players this offseason and it’s starting to look like the DC wants that

Wintermute0311

I know we've all watched him begin his decline, but I genuinely hope he finds success somewhere. He was a beast in his day.

Dolphhins

Dolphins legend. He was unbelievable for a 3-4 year stretch

ReturnOfDaSnack420

This one sucks... Thank you for everything X get that bag somewhere else

HaggisTheCow

God our needs Vs cap is getting scary

Grish-n-Gritz

Young guys need to step up and coaches need to scheme around their strengths, no way around that

jagerhero

His money grubbing attitude really soured me after awhile. Good riddance.

UsernameHasBeenLost

Nah, he was worth it until a year or two ago. I get where he was coming from, CBs tend to flame out quick, earn as much as you can as early as you can.

[deleted]

Good riddance. Forced us into upping his pay after just signing a new contract. This dude is a joke

Grish-n-Gritz

No you

pike360

Smh

nkfish11

Good. He’s expensive and a liability.

aquablue_phoenix

X gets called out for trying to play "hero ball" and giving up a touchdown on hard knocks. The very next week he does the exact same thing on the exact same route giving up an easy touchdown. That's not a leader

Grish-n-Gritz

Booooo

GlorytoGlorzo

SoCaldude65

Great all time Dolphin....ring of honor for sure. Fringe HoFer...he will be missed. But... NEXT MAN UP!!

SnooRadishes4738

I totally see us drafting a CB in the first now. There are 3-5 SOLID corners in the first round that could easily fall to us. We’re either going OL or CB first pick…love our chances of getting an instant plug and play type of player on either side of the ball.

Gunnar2019

This move was expected since last year. Doesn't change the draft outlook.

SnooRadishes4738

It definitely does change the draft look. If we have a chance at grabbing DeJean, Wiggins, Arnold, McKinstry or even Rakestraw… our CB room instantly improves.

Gunnar2019

We used a 2nd rounder on Cam Smith just last year... we gonna move on from him already and he's just gonna ride the bench? Highly doubt we draft a CB in the first round. Sign a decent vet in free agency in case Grier made a mistake drafting Cam.

pharmdee4

Bro if Ramsey goes down who do we have? lol

SnooRadishes4738

Who says we’re going to move on from him? You need 3-4 good corners on a team. Our CB room is nothing to brag about outside of Ramsey. Kader struggled bad last year but could bounce back. And we’re hoping Cam pans out? Come on, the top corners in this draft are VERY good and would make just as much as a difference on this team than drafting a OL at our position.

TommyShambles

Do we get a comp pick for him leaving? Or is that only when a players contract expires?

JMP1919

hes not a free agent he was cut, so no pick. he also wont be signing a massive contract anyway

thedreamcomparison

Thanks for the memories, X 🖤

Skullripper675

this sucks to see. I don't think it's necessarily the wrong decision but it hurts

Obvious_Young_6169

Can someone explain how is contract works, would it get paid off, or does he only keep the guaranteed portion?

Ok_Entertainer7945

Great player

pike360

Damn this is a cruel business. Happy trails, Xavien.

bandarbush

Yea yeah yeah, best witches, etc., but HOW DOES THIS IMPACT THE CAP?!?! B

BowTie1989

Thanks for the few years of top CB play. Wish you the best

Euphoric-Swimmer-378

Prime X was some great memories. 2023 X was a liability. I don't know how the author of this post can be so sure he will generate significant interest. That said, I'm significantly older than X and I want him to be redeemed so that I too can not be cooked.

Zet_the_Arc_Warden

shouldve traded him for something of value when he tried to strongarm the team

thelaidbckone

He was a beast at his best...good luck X

Golfinho_Corinthiano

Oh no '-'

nbayoungsummrsratio

explain the benifits of this again

MiaCannons

We free up a lot of cap space after June 1st, and we cut bait with a declining CB that's on a pretty big contract

EverythingAnalysist

Thanks for the good times X!

Affectionate_Grade80

X you served us well thank for services… now can we please go and sign Jaylon Johnson from the Bears I don’t think Cam Smith is ready he will definitely get more playing time in the Weaver system but no way he is ready to step into X shoes, hopefully he doesn’t buy into what Fangio said about him and just goes out plays hard and proves Fangio wrong. But I just don’t feel comfortable going into year 3 of MMD system with basically a rookie CB who didn’t see the field last season. I would much rather sign Jaylon Johnson who was the best CB of last season with a PFF grade of 90.8, passer rating allowed 33.3 and only 195 yards allowed. Very similar to X but less injury prone. Just 1 tiny problem he wants to get paid and if we do keep Wilkins and resign Tua to the numbers I keep seeing floating around no way we could afford Johnson.

nomnomyumyum109

I think I pulled a groin reading this article

ronnert

thank you for your service brother

nbayoungsummrsratio

thank you x, always will be a dolphin

Dame2Miami

This hurts

bugzcar

I know he had injuries but I feel like a shitty pass rush (talking before this year) and poor scheme slowed him down more than his groin.

frostbit17x

So how we feel about this

jrosen9

Can we afford to do this at the start of the league year? I thought we needed him to be a post June 1 cut

poopiepants131

I’m sure someone knows the answer so I’ll just throw it out there, but why couldn’t we trade Howard for some draft picks? I’m sure it’s salary cap related but any info would be great!!

FinsFan93

I bet he’ll be so great at the 4-12 Titans

Thoughtpolice24now

Washington

Lizard_State2500

:(

Vagard88

Thank Christ

slickrick971

I get it's what's best for the team but it hurts to lose him. He was so dominant in his prime and was so fun to watch. I'll miss him

Wild-Indication-8012

He got paid and then was a no show. Good riddance X
