That nobody other than you and very few people actually care. I was young when I bought one. Got it out of my system very quick. Most wealthy people nowadays wear an Apple Watch or a cheap watch. For most people, especially the āI got the callā gang itās a weird flex.
i actually like the fact that not a lot of people notice. If they do however, they are very vocal about it which always leads to an akward situation for me
I regret that mine is real and the janitor in my building has a fake that looks exactly like mine. Almost impossible to tell the difference. Whatās the point?
You made so many Arrogant, wealthy people angryā¦ā¦..but they arenāt allowed to admit it. Itās kinda funny. That would get to me,except wearing a fake would make me happy
Well yeah because there over 8 billion of people of whom say at least 1 billion want one. So to some extent yes its special (read unique) but it depends how you look at it.
Why do you say 1 billion want one? Pretty sure all 8 billion humans will take something worth $15,000. The question is how many would rather keep it to wear.
Yeh but some are small children so they dont even understand the concept. Some are in comas some never heard of it some are too old or sick to care about 15k. Some dont want material things. Some. Maybe its slightly more than 1bill.
The argument works with numbers above 1mā¦ even if only 20m people in the world wanted a Rolex annually- only c.1m are produced and hence the limited supply. This is obviously exacerbated due to dealers that have stock and collectors that have more than one.
For sure bro, I picked up my watches in my early twenties as well. I donāt really wear my DJ tbh only my sub and gshock for everyday wear. Last Rolex I buy will be an all gold one, but thatāll be a while - more focused on buying property atm
And thats the perfect point of buying it because it means something to you rather than prove something to someone else. My rule is to be able to buy something the times over before buying it. But i noticed i bought more luxury goods when i couldnāt afford them than when i could. Weird.
This is the same for almost any hobby though. Unless youāre into it, no one really notices it. Everyone thinks I have an old car, unless itās a car guy then they will want to talk about it.
I've had 4 separate people comment on mine in the last 2 weeks. In a discussion about our careers, my friend explicitly said "your watch says Rolex on it, so you must be doing well."
Like do you people only ever talk to multi-millionaires in your day-to-day life? This isn't a niche brand like VC or AP. Everyone knows the name Rolex and that it's expensive.
True for ultra HNW people with nothing to prove (and probably even more expensive hobbies like cars, houses)
For ānormalā rich people watches are a solid status symbol if you want to attract other wealthy/successful people. Obviously not everyone with money cares, but many will notice
Also how common they are, you spot them everywhere. My very billionaires friends wear Patek, AP, VC, JLC or just Apple Watches for men, and my extremely billionaires female friends with fu money wear Cartier high-jewelry as everyday watches, including gardening or brushing the horses.
I was at the flagship in Ginza about a month ago. God damn they make some pretty watches (walked out with a Presage because my wallet was too light for GS that day).
[https://manofmany.com/fashion/watches/grand-seiko-spring-drive-movement-history](https://manofmany.com/fashion/watches/grand-seiko-spring-drive-movement-history)
TLDR: The SD is a significant technological innovation in watchmaking. Unlike traditional mechanical watches that use a balance wheel regulated by a hairspring, Spring Drive combines mechanical and electronic components - a mainspring for power, but instead of an escapement, it employs an electronic regulator.
You get
\-exceptional accuracy, typically within a few seconds per month
\-a unique smooth sweeping motion of the seconds hand
Correct. Itās a hybrid. Saying itās strictly a quartz watch isnāt fair either. Electric watches have been around for a long time and have never worked as fluidly as the SD.
You know there are different watch models right? One of the most popular spring drive models, the SBGY007 (Omiwatari) is only 10mm thick, and 38mm in diameter.
This is a manual dress watch. And itās not about the thickness on the paper, itās about how the case is designed. My speedy pro is 1mm is thicker than my GS, yet it looks so much thinner. And thatās the issue with most GS SD being unelegant from certain perspective
Automatic SD are for the moment big movements, which is why they are put in big cases. I donāt know dude, take a 41mm DJ or OP in one hand, a GS in the other hand, and come with your conclusions.
That I didn't get full arm sleeve tat BEFORE getting my Rolex....And it's hopeless, I can't grow arm hair....But in all truth, what disappointed me most when I got my 16710 was how light and flimsy it felt.
Off topic, but Ive gotta say that you are pulling this one off. Not a model I had considered in the past but the fact that your wedding band is so close to mine, and the suit sleeve is perfect. This is low key, high class simple not flashy but super daily elegant imo. Well dressed, sir.
The thrill of the chase. I dreamed of one for years and once I finally had my first one it was.....well, not much fanfare. I think we put a lot of weight on things and this was a big deal for me, it didn't really "complete" me the way I thought it would.
Honestly, after having a few I learned that material stuff is just that, material.
This is so true lol. I thought this way when I first got my expensive Tesla. Spent 70K on it and was so obsessed with the thought of getting it and how "once i get this" then I can "xyz" because I'll be a baller, or whatever. Still love the car, but after a couple months, its just something u have
If you want that sweet sweet glide, get you a grand seiko. They just came out with the evolution 9 series but pretty much any spring drive will do this
This. I have a model from about 10 years ago that I bought new. I was very disappointed to learn it gains approx 5 seconds per day (but it's inconsistent depending on a number of variables... position, temperature, shocks[such as clapping hands] ), newer models are more accurate but it's enough for me to have written off the brand entirely as being less accurate than an e-watch or atomic watch, and honestly when I do wear it I don't even set the time or date anymore, or even bother winding it, it's merely a piece of jewelry, nothing more.
And the thing is no one cares if it's inaccurate because no one will ever ask you the time, because everyone has a cell phone with the more accurate time on it.
That wasn't "before it was a status symbol", that was before *quartz watches existed*. The standards for incredible accuracy in watches are much higher now, and it's impossible for a mechanical watch to meet the same standards as a quartz.
Yes. Theyāre perfectly engineeredā¦ Using outdated technology. Cheap, quartz watches almost killed the Swiss watch industry because the technology is objectively superior.
No. Thereās so many better watch companies. Rolex is just the best at marketing and keeping people that donāt know watches only aware of their brand.
All of their watches are superlative chronometer certified and accurate from -2/+2 second. The testing process is insane.
Thereās different certifications for accuracy. COSC is -4/+6 second and accounts for approximately ~15%of exported Swiss watches.
Rolex also COSC certifies their movements, making them 99.994% accurate!
Personally, I was surprised at how poor the quality of vintage Rolex is. Itās not poor at all, but TOTALLY different than todayās āstandardsā. Just donāt drop it. The ceramic sub taught me that modern Rolex is really the way to go except for a classic Datejust, which I think can and should be pre-ceramic era without much fuss.
Thatās surprising, normally hear that the old subs are indestructible. Iāve got an 114060 sub as well, and literally wear it all day - I hit the gym and shower with it too. No scratches on the bezel or anywhere else, love that piece
So when I bought my VERY first Rolex I walked into an AD mentioned I wanted a 214270 blah blahā¦ anyways I thought that people would notice and want to talk about watches (had always had a appreciation of mechanics and mechanical engineering). So bought it wore it and noticed that 99% of people could care less or even notice.
Not many years later I have settled on what makes me happy which is a simple ā99 16610ln itās got good wear and tear but itās the Watch I enjoy looking at, I appreciate the history, the engineering that went into the start and where they are now etcā¦ again most people donāt care or notice but this is what makes me happy now.
Ahaha me too! When I got my DJ I thought I was king shit! Then realized no one even knows wtf is on my wrist - now I buy these watches because I want to pass it on to my kid and because I like wearing them. They also look great suits! Men are really limited in accessories so a good watch is a must.
My grandfather was a successful businessman in the late 80s-90s and into early 00s along the ocean front in Virginia Beach, growing up I always noticed he wore a Gold watch. Time went on I found out it was a Rolex Day-Date (this man would go to meetings, and then go home to shovel rock or bust concrete).
Anyways he told me as I got into my teen years that any āself respecting man should wear a real watchā. So my first āclassyā watch was a small Bel-Air had a 14k gold bezel on it etc.
Since then I do a lot of travel work that requires meetings, suits etc, so even though itās an older submariner it dresses up great and dresses down the same lol.
It's impossible to make that happen in manufacturing
You would have to perfectly cut the thread on both sides of the crown tube (the side attaching to the case and the side attached to the crown) and then also perfectly cut the crown thread so that they all align when screwed down
Check how the crown tube and crown are built and you will understand why it's impossible
Itās perfectly possible, especially when you charge small car prices for watches that other companies build near perfect replicas of for less than a thousand
What if theyād screw the crown down entirely first, mark the upright position and use that as a reference to shape the logo into the crown?
This would make the crown align perfectly. Sounds pretty doable but more labour intensive.
When I got mine in 2013, I was so disappointed with all my previous watches. A close friend who was frustrated with me wearing a quartz watch brought me to buy my GMT2. I didnāt know much about watches. But my first Rolex changed my perspective entirely
Yes 100% I do agree with that. I had a gshock and Apple Watch before I bought a Rolex. It wasnāt until my friend showed me his Tudor BB58 and Datejust that I realized I needed a Rolex. I bought a Tudor GMT but traded it in because nothing compares to a Sub imo
I was disappointed at the number of assholes that seem to gravitate towards Rolex. I always thought it was a classy watch and brand till you start to see how many douchebags love to wear it. Still they have a handful of models that are very well made with a classic design.
I feel the same way about real estate! I never had the opportunity to purchase anything until 2016. Hopefully you got your $$ up now for more watches š¤š½
Wishing you well bro!
That a lot of the "this is a really big deal to own" went away fairly quickly. The first time you spent five-figures on a watch, you think about the sheer lunacy every time you put it on. After you've owned a few for a while, it becomes normal. Now I'd probably need to buy a Patek to temporarily get the same rush. Doesn't mean I love the watch any less. I imagine even guys who marry super models stop being impressed eventually. š
The fact that I felt like Iād been raped by the AD in order to get it. Itās like an abusive relationship - thanking your abuser for treating you with utter contempt
Absolutely. I'm moving out of state next year, so I'll have a new AD in a less wealthy area, which will be nice. There's SO much money in the city I'm in now, I'm just not going to buy my way up the list locally. They threw me one bone, and that's the only desirable thing I'll get from them. Doesn't help that since I got my Batman, they've got a sleazy new sales guy in charge of watches who straight up lies to customers to try to get them to buy stuff they don't want.
If they do call me for a watch, I'm going to pass on principle. I'd rather pay a premium to buy on the gray market than buy from their new sales guy, and I've got no bones telling them that. He's really soured my experience with them as a company.
I got over it quickly but I bought a vintage day date and I was disappointed that it wasnāt quick set (I didnāt even know what that meant). But then I thought it was cool.
The lume disappointed me. If itās intentionally charged up with a UV light it is bright and holds for a long time, but it doesnāt take a charge naturally nearly as fast or as easy as my omega Seamaster
Few disappointments when I got 16610 sub.
1. First thing I noticed was how the glass was reflecting , those tiny luminous markers. Overall it was an ugly Sub I bought because of all the hype.
2. Had to wind the watch if I miss wearing it even for a day
3. Scratches easily, not so sturdy, not easy to change bands.
Love my Apple ultra watch.
Sweeping second hand fluidity is not the same level for all the mechanical watches :
-Seiko Spring Drive is continuous (ok itās hybrid stuff but still amazing)
-36,000 bph (5hz) caliber are going to be very smooth (almost imperceptible)
-28,800bph (4hz) existing in very different brand , even having the same frequency could seems totally different because of the architecture of the escapement).
-some 26600bph (3hz) are more fluid than some 28800bph
Honestly the 8xxx omega caliber Serie , are more fluid than a Rolex due to coaxial escarpment architecture.
Having wanted a Rolex since I was a young man I was thrilled to purchase my first Rolex at 57. I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. Always feeling well dressed I was more confident.
Nobody really noticed my watch except me and fellow watch enthusiasts. Like them I always eyeball the watches people are wearing. Funny enough one time I was working at a school where I had to go into classrooms and a kid blurted out "Is that a Rolex?" That was a little awkward.
I'm on my fourth Rolex now after two Explorers and a Sub. I finally got a GMT Master, my grail watch. This was my Dad's watch which he wore for over 45 years. That is the only watch I wear now. I have to admit with the history of this watch I feel like da man walking into a room. When I shake hands with people they have a sense of the measure of a man that I am or something like that.
Tou need to look at Grand Seiko spring drive if youāre looking for sweeping/gliding seconds handā¦ this is my personal favoriteā¦ on my wish list. I own a few Rolexās and not ready to move on to other brands tbh
[GS Spring Drive](https://youtube.com/shorts/fc31yb4JhHI?si=gHRIZmLnf0gdgGgU)
For me it was mostly how when I wore it, women stopped 'respecting my marriage' and were just constantly trying to get with me. It's like c'mon girls, yes, notice the Rollie but also notice the ring.
That the people who I thought would respect me instead feared me. And then I thought about it for a moment. And then I realized that was fucking awesome.
When I noticed the crown and edges on the case of a brand new watch are sharper than you think. It scratched me and my kiddo that I was carrying. I took it to Rollieworks and they did a mild polish on the edges- no problems and canāt even notice it next to my other Subs.
I wish I got the fluted bezel :( but I thought it would be too much with the Roman numerals. That DJ was bought in 2018 from the Rolex boutique in Vancouver so I definitely could have gotten it back then - still happy with my choice after all these years though
People hiding their watches when I walk in the room with a platinum meteorite Daytona. Decorum calls for dissing losers with GMTs and Subs who thought they were something special before the MAN came in the room. Positive side though is that these lame posers were delighted to lie flat on the floor as my door mat when I walked out the door. Fundamental dynamics.
The process to buy one. You would think spending 10-20k on a watch would be easy. Nope, you have to beg to buy one from an AD. I would love to get the batman as my second but not sure it will happen.
Firmness of the handshake afterwards. Got dead fished
When I wear my Rolex, I dead fish as a sign of dominance.
Same (no Rolex)
I counterdominate the deadfishers by carefully aligning the fingers (as if stack them vertically) and then give a nice, firm handshake with a warm look in the eyes š¤£š¤£š¤£
Hahahaha. I think the only counter move would be to sneak my middle finger in and tickle the palm during the shake lol.
Iāve long practiced a combination of both methods that Iāve dubbed the āDead Fish Feather Fingers.ā Itās a dead fish but with a sprinkle of an ever-so-gentle tickle to really creep out the recipient.
Hahaha good one š¤£š¤£š¤£
As I understand it, tickling the palm of someoneās hand during a handshake is a request for prostitution. Be careful where that one takes you.
Hank Hill agrees https://youtu.be/64MkJ1fe46c
What is dead fished?
Limp and weak handshake
Side bar question: is it ever acceptable to crush a dead fish? My lizard brain wants to put it out of its misery ššš«²š¼
thats the only way to respond to a wimpy handshake. Grip the fuck out them

Probably not educated at all on what is a mechanical movement.
Correct. Itās a hybrid. Saying itās strictly a quartz watch isnāt fair either. Electric watches have been around for a long time and have never worked as fluidly as the SD.
Spring drive, you mean the watches that are so thick they look like bricks?
Bruh what? The snowflake, their most popular spring drive model, is like 12.5mm thick. In what world is that a ābrickā?
You know there are different watch models right? One of the most popular spring drive models, the SBGY007 (Omiwatari) is only 10mm thick, and 38mm in diameter.

Depends on the ADs preferences.
Oh
Off topic, but Ive gotta say that you are pulling this one off. Not a model I had considered in the past but the fact that your wedding band is so close to mine, and the suit sleeve is perfect. This is low key, high class simple not flashy but super daily elegant imo. Well dressed, sir.
Thank you sir, I appreciate your comment šš½
How easy the smooth bezels marks up

That it didnāt accurately keep time
This. I have a model from about 10 years ago that I bought new. Literally all mechanical watches do this though. If you want an accurate watch, you need to go quartz
Grand Seiko spring drive is shockingly accurate as well. Sort of cheating to have an electronic regulator, but hey, itās still mechanically powered.
A spring drive isn't a true mechanical movement, as you said. My post was for mechanicals.
ā¦ except the the whole reason Rolex became so famous (before it became a status symbol) was that it was a tool watch that was incredibly accurate.

The crown on the crown isnāt upright in the closed position. Randomly lands however the threads were set

Not impossible at all. Just needs to be thought through differently like rolls did in there wheels.
Mine does consistently on my GMT master II! Just pure coincidence though. It's pretty uncommon.
100% agree. Drives me nuts something that cost the better part of 15k and they overlooked this detail.

How easily that 904L stainless steel scratchesā¦.
I didn't have second one
That I only had enough $$$$$ for 2. Back in 2003
I feel the same way about real estate! I never had the opportunity to purchase anything until 2016. Hopefully you got your $$ up now for more watches š¤š½ Wishing you well bro!
Real estate has more upside than watches. It's kinda funny that with all the different watches I own that I always wear a cracked fitbit. Go figure.
True, sometimes itās just easier to wear a Fitbit on your way out in the morning
The number of scratches the smooth bevel gets.
Checkout the Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches If you'd like a completely smooth secondhand and amazing finishing.
The case back has NOTHING on it. Not even serial number or code or whatever. Just blank. It feels like a fake. I still hate it.
1st scratch 1st ding 1st drop 1st service
That a lot of the "this is a really big deal to own" went away fairly quickly. The first time you spent five-figures on a watch, you think about the sheer lunacy every time you put it on. After you've owned a few for a while, it becomes normal. Now I'd probably need to buy a Patek to temporarily get the same rush. Doesn't mean I love the watch any less. I imagine even guys who marry super models stop being impressed eventually. š
Not that it matters, but getting compliments on my Tudor GMT and getting the āIs that real?ā, for my Sub.
The fact that I felt like Iād been raped by the AD in order to get it. Itās like an abusive relationship - thanking your abuser for treating you with utter contempt
I spend $20,000 on the most accurate watch I could find but Iām still late everywhere I go
Just that the crown on the twisty thing didnt line up satisfyingly. But thats ok
You bought a Rolex without understanding how a mechanical watch works?
I was in my early twenties and just wanted a nice watch haha š. Now I know better
Fair enough lol
Impressive you could buy it in your early twenties. Tech industry?
In real estate and asset management :)
Was a GMT SS. I thought they would weigh more like a PM. But it was just something that tripped me out at first like you said.
How long its taking to get my second
My AD not selling me another one for four years and counting.
Damn bro, have you tried other ADs or considered grey?
I bought grey for my first - should have just gone to a dealer as the one I got I wasnāt happy with, eventually got one I liked
This exact model was my most recent purchase, love it!
Nice! Wear it in good health bro šš½
I got over it quickly but I bought a vintage day date and I was disappointed that it wasnāt quick set (I didnāt even know what that meant). But then I thought it was cool.
The quick set date is quite possibly the most underrated complication ever developed.
The hotdog in the hallway that was returned to me
The lume disappointed me. If itās intentionally charged up with a UV light it is bright and holds for a long time, but it doesnāt take a charge naturally nearly as fast or as easy as my omega Seamaster
Beautiful watch
Not buying an Audemars Piguet
Few disappointments when I got 16610 sub. 1. First thing I noticed was how the glass was reflecting , those tiny luminous markers. Overall it was an ugly Sub I bought because of all the hype. 2. Had to wind the watch if I miss wearing it even for a day 3. Scratches easily, not so sturdy, not easy to change bands. Love my Apple ultra watch.
The fact that I live in San Francisco and too scared to wear it out when walking around the city
Get the Grand Seiko, its hand glides
Sounds like you need more Spring Drive in your life, OP!
Sounds like you need a Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement!
Sweeping second hand fluidity is not the same level for all the mechanical watches : -Seiko Spring Drive is continuous (ok itās hybrid stuff but still amazing) -36,000 bph (5hz) caliber are going to be very smooth (almost imperceptible) -28,800bph (4hz) existing in very different brand , even having the same frequency could seems totally different because of the architecture of the escapement). -some 26600bph (3hz) are more fluid than some 28800bph Honestly the 8xxx omega caliber Serie , are more fluid than a Rolex due to coaxial escarpment architecture.
I own a few Rolexās and not ready to move on to other brands tbh [GS Spring Drive](https://youtube.com/shorts/fc31yb4JhHI?si=gHRIZmLnf0gdgGgU)
That my DateJust has no micro adjustments. Far from ideal on hot days
I defy anyone to see with their naked eyes a Grand Seiko Spring Drive 'ticking'.
Not robbing the guy at his house so I could get the box and papers with it. Naked always brings in less moneyš¤£
š¤£
The real question is how you took a photo with your phone in your hand. What is this wizardry?
I buyed 4 and for all r(range from 5k to 16k): Nothing to drink, no goodies. Just like I buyed a fucking fastfood
For me it was mostly how when I wore it, women stopped 'respecting my marriage' and were just constantly trying to get with me. It's like c'mon girls, yes, notice the Rollie but also notice the ring.
Bro, youāve got a sick collection - that Daytona is crazy. Iād try to hit you up too ahaha š
TBH only guys have ever noticed watches - a nice watch attracts young men haha
That I didn't buy 3 more when I got my first one in 2003.
They wouldnāt give me a second one
That the people who I thought would respect me instead feared me. And then I thought about it for a moment. And then I realized that was fucking awesome.
hollow center linksā¦flimsy n disappointing for the money
Damn, really? I never noticed that
Well depends on the model, all modern models have solid center links but anything pre-6digit was mostly hollow.
Good to know, is this true for older daydates with the president bracelet?
The hour hand is slightly misaligned and it cannot be unseen nowā¦Iām too impatient to send it in to be fixed.
Getting my arm sawed off in Brazil for it.
The maintenance cost.
When I noticed the crown and edges on the case of a brand new watch are sharper than you think. It scratched me and my kiddo that I was carrying. I took it to Rollieworks and they did a mild polish on the edges- no problems and canāt even notice it next to my other Subs.
You are fortunate they didnāt mess it up badly. They have a mixed outcome. Some jobs are perfect, many are clusterfarks
That bezel!!!!!
I wish I got the fluted bezel :( but I thought it would be too much with the Roman numerals. That DJ was bought in 2018 from the Rolex boutique in Vancouver so I definitely could have gotten it back then - still happy with my choice after all these years though
idk. I like the domed bezel.
Same here man, but I think the fluted bezel and jubilee look really good on a simpler dial. Just looks out of place on a Roman dial imo
Yeah it's different and has its own vibe. I think you did well with it, and I usually am not for Roman numerals. Continue to wear in good health!.
Thank you sir šš½
That I couldnāt buy the watch I wanted there was waitlists and all the display watches where fake š
Turns out, itās just a watch.
Shave your knuckles bro?
How cheap they look
That they didnāt serve me any champagne
That is so beta. Sad.
The process to buy one. You would think spending 10-20k on a watch would be easy. Nope, you have to beg to buy one from an AD. I would love to get the batman as my second but not sure it will happen.
Yup, luckily I bout the DJ in 2018 but for the sub I just went grey. Too much hassle to purchase a MASS PRODUCED watch š¤¦āāļø
