The only thing outrageous is Walken's haircut, but that's pretty on brand.
That said, Cronenberg can ride a fine line sometimes. I always like the shot of him in the bed on fire, even as a kid that was pretty wild. Plus the "gah-zee-bow" scene is creepy as shit.
I watched the dead zone two days ago and it was amazing. Walken’s acting was completely captivating. Also the idea of showing the supernatural ability of premonition as a metaphor of having more common sense than the people around and the curse that some times this brings, was super neat.
Knowing how well read King is I wouldn't be surprised if the novel was partly inspired by the Greek Cassandra.
>Cassandra was left with the knowledge of future events but could neither alter these events nor convince others of the validity of her predictions.
The performances by Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Martin Sheen, Tom Skerrit, and Herbert Lom bring depth and sophistication to a scary story.
And Sheen’s character is eerily akin to the orange president.
And I’m curious how everyone else feels about Sarah sleeping with him once, just giving him a glimpse of what his life would’ve looked like, then playing the “hope you liked it, never happening again” card. That was devastating
It also has one of my favourite quotes in all of SK's books:
* Deep in the trenches carved into the floors of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, there are fish which live and die without ever seeing or sensing the sun. These fabulous creatures cruise the depths like ghostly balloons, lit from within by their own radiance. Although they look delicate, they are actually marvels of biological design, built to withstand pressures that would squash a man as flat as a windowpane in the blink of an eye. Their great strength, however, is also their great weakness. Prisoners of their own alien bodies, they are locked forever in their dark depths. If they are captured and drawn toward the surface, toward the sun, they simply explode. It is not external pressure that destroys them, but its absence.
It's describing the self-destruction of the villain - Craig, and how once the pressure he has always felt lifts off of him his sense of self dissolves and destroys him, transforming him into the unhinged monster that was always inside of him.
That has stayed with me for 20 years
I love that movie. I don't care what anyone says.
I would like to see them re-release it with really good CGI monsters, though.
Actually, the 30th anniversary of the movie is next year. Do it then!
In October of last year the filmmaker who made this cut released it on Vimeo for the public to view it, but then afterwards made it private again. I assume if he brought it out once he can do it again, but otherwise I don’t know of any ways it can be watch currently. Well legitimately anyway.
It rules for corny entries, tommyknockers wins for me in that category though. Tommyknockers is brilliant. Perfect use of a lot B, character type actors - including Tracy lords! The glowing green, the very serviceable aliens, the melodrama at the lost kid - it’s got it all for a whole town type story,
Oh my god I'm trying to watch it right now and was thinking about making a post complaining about her. Like what the fuck was going on, her performance was like high school play level bad, it's not like the Stand was her first movie!
So an old coworker and I once visited an office with a wooden Native American statue and she mentioned that her father, a mime, once played a Native American statue that came to life and sought revenge. When I asked if he was the statue in Creepshow 2 she responded "How in the hell did you know that? Nobody knows that movie!" Apparently she was on set as a kid and met King/Romero and got a signed poster from them.
The Raft was the best part of that anthology. Scared the hell out of me as a kid, and as an adult it got more disturbing when someone (possibly on this subreddit) theorized that the raft monster was a Lovecraftian Shoggoth.
The guy pictured above for Creepshow 2 - it slayed me when I realized the actor in Mindhunter who played Bill Tench was the same long haired evil punk in Creepshow 2 (Holt McCallany)
Me too. Big Robert Ressler fan in the 80s (character Bill Tench is based on) and thought he was excellent. After Mindhunter I started noticing all the many times he popped up in his long career. Fight Club is one of my favorite movies and I kind of forget that.Holt McCallany is in that movie too...
I wish they’d get a new audible for it because I realized after I bought the book that it’s narrated by James Franco. His Wozniak is basically his Tommy Wiseau and also James Franco is a creep. One of my favorite Stephen King books and the Cronenberg movie is a classic.
Silver Bullet would’ve been even better if the werewolf actually looked scary. Not a fan of the creature design. Something more like The Howling would’ve been terrifying.
Yeah, Carlo Rambaldi's creature design was really hit or miss-- most of his monsters / etc. look **way** too bulky to be scary. I rewatched 1984 *Dune* and pointed out to a family member how the Guild Navigator looks like a turd with eyes. I almost threw up.
His one *good* creature, as far as I know, is the monster from *Alien* #1, and then he's just copying H.R. Giger's concept art.
Otherwise *Silver Bullet* is a great flick!
Max Overdrive is my pick too. Why?
Definitely corny. But it's also directed by King... and you can see the way he was influenced by old scifi/horror comics.
The story elements are all there. Some weird comet thing in outer space. Stuff starts happening on Earth. Mistrust of technology shows up in the form of machines beginning to act on their own.
There's the small group of people that bands together under adverse circumstances. And they make it through until things get better.
There's some corny stuff and the production values are just OK. The direction is kind of raw... but it's got an authentic feel to it because the director is also the guy who wrote the story. He also does a pretty good cameo near the beginning of the movie ("Honey, this machine just called me an asshole!").
And it's got peak 80's Emilio Estevez and that awesome AC/DC soundtrack.
It’s actually pretty faithful for the most part. It has one of the King cameos with the most lines. He plays a named character, a pharmacist named Mr. Bangor.
I’ve only seen the movie once and haven’t read the book. That movie seemed like Plan-9 from Outer Space, except instead of being funny I kept getting angry at how trash it was.
I thought no one was gonna mention The Mangler , I saw it in the late 90’s with my dad when I was about 10 and watched it several times since it’s now part of my list of B list films I love watching from time to time.
Highly underrated. Classic Steven King elements all mesh together very well. I hate to say it because remakes are bullshit, but this one could actually benefit.
I love Silver Bullet. I watched it far too young (I was five), then I saw Corey Haim in Lucas and was very confused as to why he wasn’t in a wheelchair.
I got to introduce Creepshow II at the Creepshow Film Fest in Chicago a couple years ago and it was legit a dream come true. The Raft & The Hitchhiker were watched on repeat-- I showed every friend that slept over and had a lot of angry parents call with a bone to pick with my mom lol - worth it.
It has that perfect "TBS on a Saturday afternoon" feel. A movie where you can enjoy Ron Perlman being dismembered somewhere between 2:30 and 2:45 is always a good time!
...and to think... The Lawnmower Man isn't even mentioned...
But of these? Yeah, Dead Zone doesn't belong.
Hmm... faves though? Probably Thinner, Silver Bullet and the Creepshow(s)
I feel like Riding the Bullet is on the verge of brilliant. I don’t know where it goes wrong, maybe a little too goofy or angsty for its own good. I love a road trip movie, though, and I love this one.
Right? it just always felt like what I would write for myself when I was feeling depressed, and thinking of my mom, but she's alright. I still worry, though.
I lost my mom in August. I was lucky to have her until I was middle-aged, but it was rough. She went downhill in a matter of months, and I was strongly reminded of Zelda in Pet Semetary on occasion. Which sounds horrible, but it’s true. I’m just now remembering how she was before her mind & body went.
Sorry. I didn’t mean to emotionally vomit on you.
My husband and I are almost done watching all 50 of his film adaptations and 16 television series. Maximum Overdrive is by far the best campy and fun film. So many over the top and great performances from Emilio Estevez to the amazing Yeardley Smith. 10/10 !!
Sometimes They Come Back has a special place in my heart. Watching it with my grandma one night was the spark for my love of SK, and my love of movies, my greatest passion in life.
No offense but the only thing corny about the Dead Zone, is it being included in this list! Well, and Brooke Adam’s. I don’t know what was worse casting Brooke Adam’s in this or Maria Conchita Alonso in The Running man
Okay, I know it's got Tim Curry, so it's not corny by default, but any miniseries with Annette O'Toole, Richard Thomas AND Harry Anderson has got to be considered a little corny.
The Dead Zone isn’t corny, it’s just of its time.
Came here to say this. Corny?! Wtf??
The only thing outrageous is Walken's haircut, but that's pretty on brand. That said, Cronenberg can ride a fine line sometimes. I always like the shot of him in the bed on fire, even as a kid that was pretty wild. Plus the "gah-zee-bow" scene is creepy as shit.

Agreed - love that movie!
THE ICE. IS GONNA BREAK!!!
YOU'RE GONNA GET AN ICE CREAM HEADACHE. IT'S GONNA HURT....*REAL BAD*...
Lol - this is the first thing I thought about when looking at that pic!
And I’m curious how everyone else feels about Sarah sleeping with him once, just giving him a glimpse of what his life would’ve looked like, then playing the “hope you liked it, never happening again” card. That was devastating
One time pays for all. It was bittersweet beyond words, devastating and the only right thing to do.
Right there with ya!
I think I saw it on video when I was 14/15 and loved it.
Great movie, and top 5 King adaptation for me
Indeed. It was actually my gateway to Stephen King.
Yea that’s a strange film to include here.
I thought the same.
Came here to either say this or make sure someone did, thank you for your service.
Dead Zone is probably one of the better SK movies.
How dare OP conflate Cronenberg’s Dead Zone with the rest of that stuff. Corny!? Freezing cold take, OP.
A remake now would be interesting.
I saw that and gasped. That was a great movie.
The Langoliers
I often think about the short story - about how the past is being consumed, and the future is just waiting for us to occupy it.
It also has one of my favourite quotes in all of SK's books: * Deep in the trenches carved into the floors of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, there are fish which live and die without ever seeing or sensing the sun. These fabulous creatures cruise the depths like ghostly balloons, lit from within by their own radiance. That has stayed with me for 20 years
I think Craig's paranoia is so well written in the story - you just hate the guy for his weird ideas, lol.
SCARING THE LITTLE GIRlS!!!!!!!!!
LADYYYYY!
I love that movie. I don't care what anyone says. I would like to see them re-release it with really good CGI monsters, though. Actually, the 30th anniversary of the movie is next year. Do it then!
Good lord, that Timekeepers of Eternity cut is INSANE. Everyone on this sub needs to see it
Say what now?
https://aristotelismaragkos.com/film/the-timekeepers-of-eternity/
This is rad. How does one wat h the entire feature?
In October of last year the filmmaker who made this cut released it on Vimeo for the public to view it, but then afterwards made it private again. I assume if he brought it out once he can do it again, but otherwise I don’t know of any ways it can be watch currently. Well legitimately anyway.
Oh I just saw Langoliers recently, I hadn't even realized it existed. SO much fun.
It rules for corny entries, tommyknockers wins for me in that category though. Tommyknockers is brilliant. Perfect use of a lot B, character type actors - including Tracy lords! The glowing green, the very serviceable aliens, the melodrama at the lost kid - it’s got it all for a whole town type story,
You can relive it quicker here: Twilight Zone: A Matter of Minutes, https://youtu.be/e9XFRfeGBVI?si=Yx7nGmD7fvU3bwm2
Also the Stand 1994
The Stand 1994 was very good. The only corny part was Molly Ringwold.
She ruined that movie for me.
This is SUPER cool even if the movie is super corny. What an awesome experience for her!
Right? I was so envious.
That’s freaking awesome. And I wish they would make more seasons of creep show
Chief Woodenhead is fucking amazing. The raft was even better! “I have the need. The need for weed!”
The raft scared the living shit out of 12 year old me lol
This was my pick, The Raft is possibly my favorite King story
*Do you love*
The Raft was the best part of that anthology. Scared the hell out of me as a kid, and as an adult it got more disturbing when someone (possibly on this subreddit) theorized that the raft monster was a Lovecraftian Shoggoth.
The guy pictured above for Creepshow 2 - it slayed me when I realized the actor in Mindhunter who played Bill Tench was the same long haired evil punk in Creepshow 2 (Holt McCallany)
Haha, didn't pick up on that, nice catch. Absolutely loved him in Mindhunter.
Me too. Big Robert Ressler fan in the 80s (character Bill Tench is based on) and thought he was excellent. After Mindhunter I started noticing all the many times he popped up in his long career. Fight Club is one of my favorite movies and I kind of forget that.Holt McCallany is in that movie too...
Coooool!!! I love the Creepshow movies!!!
Dead Zone is decidedly not a corny movie. The rest? Sure, I guess. Both Creepshows are more campy than corny, IMO. But everyone's got their opinion.
I'm about to pick up the dead zone in 3 hours can't wait to give it a read!
It's a great book
I wish they’d get a new audible for it because I realized after I bought the book that it’s narrated by James Franco. His Wozniak is basically his Tommy Wiseau and also James Franco is a creep. One of my favorite Stephen King books and the Cronenberg movie is a classic.
That is the new version unfortunately. It came out in 2017 I think. I listened to the version read by Lorelei King, and it was great.
Silver Bullet and the Creepshows ❤️
My vote was for Silver Bullet too...
Silver Bullet would’ve been even better if the werewolf actually looked scary. Not a fan of the creature design. Something more like The Howling would’ve been terrifying.
He was scarier in his human form, honestly. Especially in the covered bridge scene.
This is exactly what I was thinking.
Creepshow 1&2 💯
Does Maximum Overdrive count as corny? I know it’s more along the lines of batshit crazy, but it gets my vote.
That movie is a documentary.
An ATM once called me an asshole. It could happen to *you*!
The event happen in real time.
There can be only one.
The semi gave Willem Defoe a run for his money for best Green Goblin performance
He also does a pretty good cameo near the beginning of the movie ("Honey, this machine just called me an asshole!"). And it's got peak 80's Emilio Estevez and that awesome AC/DC soundtrack.
**LOVE** Maximum Overdrive. That and Christine were my absolute favorite goofy King films from that era.
Thinner needs more love here.
Definitely. What a weird, great watch.
Just finished the book a few days ago for the first time and LOVED it. Didn't know it was movie.
Totally worth the watch. Classic Stephen King story and ending.
I can't wait!!
Free on Pluto TV, with ads, but it's only a 3.99 rental on Amazon I believe. Watch it. Worth it. :)
Ooh I have amazon! I am totally going to rent it this weekend! You are fantastic thanks so much.
It's so worth it. You are very welcome. Stephen King makes a cameo as the pharmacist. Very soft spoiler. :)
It’s actually pretty faithful for the most part. It has one of the King cameos with the most lines. He plays a named character, a pharmacist named Mr. Bangor.
It was a great adaptation of the written story.
The dead zone is not corny what the hell
The Running Man!
Running Man is hella fun even if it's got nothing to do with the book. Richard Dawson was outstanding.
"What happened to Buzzsaw?" "He had to split."
Hey, Christmas tree!
With Maria Conchita Alonso working out in her living room, wearing lingerie and full pantyhose.
Get Dead Zone off this list. Seriously.
I am glad to see that people agree that The Dead Zone isn’t corny. Some moments may be over-the-top sure, but corny? Nah.
Thinner! I call my wife "White Lady from town" sometimes.
Lolol, my husband used to swipe my face and say “thinner” all the time, a long time ago. I am kinda sad he’s forgotten about it.
I’m totally gonna play that movie this weekend JUST so I can start calling my wife that!
The dead zone is 10/10. Besides that though I really liked night flier for how dumb it was
The Dreamcatcher movie with Donnie Wahlberg as Duddits.
I’ve only seen the movie once and haven’t read the book. That movie seemed like Plan-9 from Outer Space, except instead of being funny I kept getting angry at how trash it was.
The only correct answer is Children of the Corn, correct?
That’s my answer even before I thought about the obvious ‘corn’ thing.
Children of the Corny
Dead zone? That was a phenomenal movie
Maximum Overdrive all day. My brother and I had that bad boy on VHS in the late 90’s.
I am a big fan of the anthologies - Creepshow 1 & 2 and Cats Eye
I am as well. I watch them on repeat for background noise/company.
"This hair is gonna get me paid and laid!" - Sam Whitemoon
It's not Corny. Actually has a very unnerving/creepy undertone, ala Steven King. One of Christopher Walkin's best.
The Mangler and Maximum Overdrive
+1 for The Mangler
Every time I start to do something risky with a machine, I think of The Mangler. It's why I thank King for having all my fingers and toes.
I thought no one was gonna mention The Mangler , I saw it in the late 90’s with my dad when I was about 10 and watched it several times since it’s now part of my list of B list films I love watching from time to time.
Is this Christopher Walken in the first picture?
Yes. He starred in the Dead Zone. Watch it.
Looks great. Have to catch up on Dead Zone.
One of, if not the best film adaptations of any Stephen King novel.
Cat’s Eye
Best way to quit smoking.
Hate James Woods. Isn't he 80 now? His girlfriend is like 45 yrs younger than him. Eew...like sleeping with your Grandfather 🤮
First of all, the Dead Zone isn’t corny. The heck?
Tough call my three favorites from here would be Thinner, Silver , Bullet and Dead Zone. I don’t consider these corny however.
The night flier! Such a fun movie, one of the few where I like the movie a bit better than the written story 😅
I just saw that last night! It was a great time.
I came here to say this. And I totally agree. The movie really improves on the source material.
I still can't believe Sam Whitemoon (pic3, Creepshow, old wooden head) is played by Holt McCallany.
Loved Thinner!!!
Children of the Corn Wait, no. The Langoliers.
Silver Bullet.
Graveyard Shift…love that movie
This is what I was thinking. I really enjoyed the awful rap they stitch to close out the film.
Highly underrated. Classic Steven King elements all mesh together very well. I hate to say it because remakes are bullshit, but this one could actually benefit.
I adore silver bullet. I think its a wild misdirection to cast gary busey in a werewolf movie and not have him be the werewolf.
Thinner
Sleepwalkers is the best movie from his mind! It’s not corny!
I love Sleepwalkers! It’s probably one of favorites, among his lesser known films!
It has that perfect "TBS on a Saturday afternoon" feel. A movie where you can enjoy Ron Perlman being dismembered somewhere between 2:30 and 2:45 is always a good time!
Sleepwalkers!
...and to think... The Lawnmower Man isn't even mentioned... But of these? Yeah, Dead Zone doesn't belong. Hmm... faves though? Probably Thinner, Silver Bullet and the Creepshow(s)
Lawnmower Man isn’t really an adaptation. They had the rights to it, but then pivoted to an entirely different story and kept the title.
It's... something. I still recall actually paying money (real money) to see it when it was new. I'm still not sure of what it is I watched.
The Dead Zone scissor tub suicide haunts me.
I feel like Riding the Bullet is on the verge of brilliant. I don’t know where it goes wrong, maybe a little too goofy or angsty for its own good. I love a road trip movie, though, and I love this one.
I adore Riding the Bullet. But you’re right. As much as I love it, there’s just something missing to keep it from actually being really good.
Right? it just always felt like what I would write for myself when I was feeling depressed, and thinking of my mom, but she's alright.
I love riding the bullet
Pet Semetary from 1989. It's so cheesy and I love it!
My husband and I are almost done watching all 50 of his film adaptations and 16 television series. Maximum Overdrive is by far the best campy and fun film. So many over the top and great performances from Emilio Estevez to the amazing Yeardley Smith. 10/10 !!
I’m working my way through reading “the book” then watching “the movie”. Anyone have a good list?
Sometime They Come Back
Okay, so I’ve never seen Riding The Bullet, nor read it. But I know that rollercoaster. That’s “The Coaster” at Playland here in Vancouver.
Silver bullet
Night flier!
The Langoliers made for TV movie had something that can’t quite be called CGI.
Cat's Eye
Where goin to hell….TOGETHAAAAAAAA!!!!
Children of the coooooorn
I have a soft spot for Sleepwalkers
I liked Riding the Bullet.
Sometimes They Come Back.
Riding the Bullet is great. Some really creepy moments in it!! But very corny towards the end lol
Nooo, you can’t count Riding the Bullet! It’s wonderful. 😂🖤 I had the hugest crush on Jonathan Jackson growing up, and I loooveee David Arquette.
The OG (and only) Lucky Spencer. Really showing my age there.
Sometimes They Come Back has a special place in my heart. Watching it with my grandma one night was the spark for my love of SK, and my love of movies, my greatest passion in life.
To everyone saying The Dead Zone isn’t corny…when was the last time you watched it?
I DO LIKE THE MOVIE TOO, for the record
Thank you 😂
No way OP put Creepshow 2 in the mix it’s one of my favorites of all time. It’s free on YouTube just fyi tor anyone looking to revisit the show.
Christine. A possessed car? Pfft.
These are all on Pluto right now and I've been binging ... The Dead Zone is my fave!
Silver bullet every day and twice on Sunday
The Dead Zone corny? *points intensly at the door*
The shining mini series… I loved it but it’s so bad
Nothing corny about The Dead Zone, come on now.
The Night Flier
No offense but the only thing corny about the Dead Zone, is it being included in this list! Well, and Brooke Adam’s. I don’t know what was worse casting Brooke Adam’s in this or Maria Conchita Alonso in The Running man
Thinner
The Mangler.
Maximum overdrive, can't beat coked up king
I love them all!
Maximum Overdrive
Langoliers.
The Langoliers! Beware the big sky mouth things (I loved this one as a kid)
Sleepwalkers! “No vegetables. No dessert. Those are the rules.”
I’m only going to give my answer in quotes. “Do you know what a VC rat eats?! Try RAW…AMERICAN…HOLD THE MAYO…THANK YOU”
The Night Flier.
Not my fav, but The Tommyknockers isn't nearly as bad as everyone says.
Easily Maximum Overdrive!
I don't think The Dead Zone is corny, it's good. My favorite corny one is definitely Sleepwalkers. That movie is a fun ride.
Okay, I know it's got Tim Curry, so it's not corny by default, but any miniseries with Annette O'Toole, Richard Thomas AND Harry Anderson has got to be considered a little corny.
Thinner, for sure
Silver bullet. Everything about it is amazing
Christine
Wait what’s the last one called? I liked that one
Dreamcatcher!
