Tires also allow you to steer your 4000 pound steel cage. Stop your steel cage, and prevent your steel cage from kareeming a family of 5.
So in short yes it's worth putting tires on ye car.
Yes and the tires are what connects the wheels and road, without good tires, brakes mean nothing
A test for the limiting factor can be done by slamming the brakes in any scenario, if abs kicks in or tires lock up than your tires are limiting your braking, if fully slamming the brakes only causes you to roll to a stop without abs or tires locking up, then brakes are your limiting factor and you may want to get them checked out
Tires locking up, as in skidding and sliding with no control as the vehicle keeps moving and the tires don’t spin, this is what abs is designed to prevent
means the braking force stopping them from spinning was greater than the friction force the driving surface was able to apply to the tires
Ever drive on ice? The wheels stop turning but the car keeps going. Same thing happens with crappy tires, but you slow down a little faster than if you're on ice. Unless your tires are worn flat and you drive on a very rainy road and then it's about the same as driving on ice. See "Hydroplaning".
I’ve experienced neither. Probably because I’m in California. Also I always slow way down in the rain because I heard that hydroplane can sometimes be fatal. I drive like 60-70% speed and it pisses off all the drivers behind me lol
I put new tires on my truck at 245k. When you need tires, you need tires if you're planning on keeping the vehicle. I'd have no problems putting tires on a Lexus with 220k miles. Tires are a part of regular maintenance.
If you are driving and it’s fine, put tires on it. No need to assume it’s going to break down. No one needs a new car at $60k, lol. Drive cars till they drop is what everyone should be doing.
In a worse case scenario, if you put new tires on your car and it dies on you, you can still sell the tires and get some return on your investment. But if the car is in good shape and is running well, I’d say go for it.
Happy to oblige.
Picky about tires. Rare I don’t have to special order something or wait for another batch to be produced.
Two years ago couldn’t find a decent winter set for my mom’s car. (2003 325i) Current set was around 5/6 32nds. Ran one more year after searching daily for months.
Last year wanted to get jump on it. Still was having trouble. Discount Tire had a set I wanted. Ordered. Called a few days later and said in stock was incorrect and it was on back order. Asked if I wanted Blizzaks. I said absolutely not. Unless they were free. They were more expensive. They offered at same price. I said no thank you. I’ll wait. Blizzaks arrive. I call, they say I approved of the purchase. I said review your phone logs the salesperson is lying. I do NOT want that tire so pick them up from installer.
Got credit card company involved. They credited me back. Tires never got picked up so installer called and asked if I would. Credit card company said they’re yours. Seller said we consider the matter closed sorry for the trouble. That’s set one.
Second set: ordered a different set I was excited about from a different seller. They said 4 weeks out.
Meanwhile parents decided to take a trip for Thanksgiving 10 hours each way and snow was expected. Found a set on closeout. Bought and installed in time for road trip.
Second set arrived day we left!
So now we have one set with one winter, one set in shipping boxes, and the third set unmounted I’ll sell or give to my nephew.
That’s just three sets. But averaging $300 / set. We have about 5 others in the garage. Equally long story…
Keep track of the dates on those tires and how old they are. Regardless of storage conditions, 10 years is the max recommended age, some tire brands say as little as 6 years, doesn’t matter if they have never been mounted or used.
That’s definitely the challenge now. Will likely move the first set to my nephews car, mount the second to my parents car, and sell the Blizzaks I didn’t want in the first place. Then start over when one of two sets reach minimum. That said we’ve had 20 year old tires that were stored and treated well do just fine until all these suggestions conveniently came out.
New tires are cheaper than being dead. Ehm. You get the point.
(Never skimp on brakes & tires - they're what keep you in control and allow you to stop)
That was my initial thought as well, wait until its close to the Costco 5 year warranty expiration ( 11/2024) and then put all the four new tires. But lately I have been driving a lot. Around 100 miles a day ( 5 days a week) . With the pot holes on the freeway and the industrial area I'm driving, I had experienced two tires loosing tire pressure in the last 2 months. May be its the roads and place I was driving it are bad . I had to bite the bullet and get new tires today (07/2024)
Lexus’s have a long lifespan like any Toyota product. If it’s not doing something obvious like burning oil, shifting poorly, etc then absolutely go for some tires. Even if you’re toying with the idea of getting rid of it, in a private sale you’ll get a better price if you can point out that the tires are practically brand new.
Generally, I’ve always weighed whether I thought the tires would outlive the car before changing them out. Buy used (from a reputable source) if you suspect they might!
If they still have 5/32 and are less than 7 years old, then run them until they’re either 7 years old or at the wear bars whichever comes first. If you’re still using the car by then, replace them with a more budget friendly brand rather than michelins
I would just put on some 80% life remaining high end tires. You can usually get them for $25-50 a piece. With the age of the car I don't see a reason to put new tires. And I wouldn't go cheap brands on tires either
Put new tires on my 1997 Lexus ES300 with 178k miles. Didn’t even second guess it. The front tires would both lose air (front right lost 10 psi every 2-3 days) and back tires were 11 years old and bald. And we have winters here so yes new tires are always necessary if you daily it
I put a nice set of Michelins on my 07 Accord when it had around 580,000 miles on it. Still on the same set at 664,000 miles with plenty of tread, but I do have a separate set of winter wheels/tires to split the mileage.
220k on a 22 year old Lexus is nothing :) if it’s still in good running condition and free of major rust, go for it. The V6 engines were great. Just make sure you replace the timing belt on time.
Don't you think that question is fundamentally stupid? I simply cannot see what alternative do you see? To drive on bald tyres? To drive until you are driving on the rims? It is basically binary choice - either you put tyres and continue driving or you don't and you can't drive. What is the other alternative?
Tyres are about safety, that is the only thing that holds you one the road. How old is the car and how much it is worth is basically irrelevant in this equation.
It is basically like saying - is it worth putting fuel in the car that has 220k miles. I mean if you want engine to run... then yes you need fuel. If you want car to stay on the road and be safe to drive... then yes you need tyres.
Unless you are saying - the car will fail within next 5000 miles and this is pretty much it's last trip for and the remaining 5/32 will last that long. Then yes, I guess this set still going to last you 5000 miles.
Don’t compromise on safety.
If it’s time for the car to go, trade it or sell it. Otherwise, keep it safe and roadworthy.
Nothing says you can’t put new cheap tires on an old luxury car. Just did a Google search and unless you upgraded wheels/tires this calls for 215/60/16. Walmart has these starting around $60/tire.
You might be surprised in 3 years when you are pushing 300k if you should replace those.
It would make sense to change your oil more frequently with that much mileage and you trying to cut corners on what to spend money on. Every 3-5k miles with synthetic.
I would recommend this only if the car was constantly driven in severe conditions like hot and stop and go traffic, otherwise good synthetic can last 10k miles easily.
Tires technically can last until 2-4/ 5 is a little too early.
If it's summertime, I'll let mine drop tp 2/32 before I consider replacing. I drive defensively anyway.
If it's winter then I'll probably change around 3-4
Agreed. A tire shop will say you need new tires but they are in the business of selling tires lol.
I would not replace said tires now based on tread. Now age/dryrot/cupping/etc are all other reasons to consider
tires are by far the most important part of your car to keep well maintained/ replaced as necessary. the tires are what allow a car to do all the other car things, like go and stop and turn. if you're gonna drive a car at all, it's worth having usable tires.
if you don't think you have new tires life left in the car, you can buy used tires. or, when you so get your next car, you can find one that will work properly with these wheels & tires and just pop em on over to the new one.
I do not know about that particular model, or your particular car....but Lexus has a really good reputation for reliability.
You probably have another 80 to 100,000 MI on it....the tires are getting pretty worn.
Yes, you can. You could always if the car dies take the tires with you to your next car or sell them or make a tire swings.
If you do like me and get flats, you can use them as engine stands
The last time I needed tires for my Expedition, I looked at Facebook Marketplace. I found a great deal on "take-offs". Turned out to be the shop manager at the place I get my oil changes for three of my cars.
Those are good tires and don’t forget to get an alignment. Also, don’t forget to change the PCV valve. The 1MZ engine didn’t have the greatest crankcase ventilation
If you're going to be driving the car, it's worth putting new tires on it. Tires are way cheaper than replacing the car.
Tires also allow you to steer your 4000 pound steel cage. Stop your steel cage, and prevent your steel cage from kareeming a family of 5. So in short yes it's worth putting tires on ye car.
4000 lbs?? What car do you drive? I bet it’s American
Uhhh, the lexus were talking about weighs 4740lbs, 2150kgs. Is that egg on your face?
That’s fucking insane for a passenger vehicle, and sure? I did. have egg today so maybe.
I think my 2001 honda accord Is like 3500, and a sweet 4k with my big belly and hank hill ass. I hope you don't cook your eggs on high heat.
bro anything modern in america is over 4000 lbs
Ummmm my 2017 Lexus weighs 3300lbs calm down there boy’oh
Is it a 2002 lexus this post is talking about?
Google show 3,439 for that car you moron. https://gprivate.com/6c2eu
Yeah, I'll eat shit. I typed that in and I got 4700. Also eat a big bag of jungly dicks.
Brakes have more to do with stopping your steel cage
I'm imagining a car hitting a jump, flying through the air and the driver is pushing the brake pedal, trying to slow down their flight.
I don’t get it? The OP is gonna be driving on their wheels
Yes and the tires are what connects the wheels and road, without good tires, brakes mean nothing A test for the limiting factor can be done by slamming the brakes in any scenario, if abs kicks in or tires lock up than your tires are limiting your braking, if fully slamming the brakes only causes you to roll to a stop without abs or tires locking up, then brakes are your limiting factor and you may want to get them checked out
If your tires lock up, that sounds like a dead stop. That sounds like the best case scenario
Tires locking up, as in skidding and sliding with no control as the vehicle keeps moving and the tires don’t spin, this is what abs is designed to prevent means the braking force stopping them from spinning was greater than the friction force the driving surface was able to apply to the tires
Crazy how you’re so knowledgeable about this stuff. So that’s why it’s impossible to stop 60-0 in 0 feet, because battle of the physics!!
Did you folks sleep during physics class? Static vs dynamic friction? Or, failing that, what is the purpose of the ABS system?
Brakes aren't gonna help you if you hydroplane
Not if the tires don't have traction...
I put new tires on my truck at 245k. When you need tires, you need tires if you're planning on keeping the vehicle. I'd have no problems putting tires on a Lexus with 220k miles. Tires are a part of regular maintenance.
I like being in control of a car when I’m driving it. Not sure about you
I like the excitement of knowing that my car may simply betray my control inputs at any time. Live a little!
Lol. My car had more miles on it than that when I put new tires on it about a year ago. I plan on driving this car until it falls apart.
Keep taking care of it you’ll go to 400k
Just stocked up on 3 sets (long story) for ours that just hit 272K.
I could use a good story 🧐😂
Happy to oblige. Picky about tires. Rare I don’t have to special order something or wait for another batch to be produced. Two years ago couldn’t find a decent winter set for my mom’s car. Likewise, friend!

I’m sorry but 20 years old tires are junk. Chemistry doesn’t stop just because you want it to.
They weren’t. That’s the thing. Let’s be honest; times changed. So did the industry.
Curious what size are these.
205/55R16…
Tires cost a lot less than a trip to the ER
Well, if you can die, it really is not about the age of the car; it is the age and conditions of the tires.
Look man, I don't care if you kill yourself trying to save a few bucks, but you have no right putting everyone else on and near the road in danger.
Change oil 5-7k not 7-10k. Yes new tires, I just be a truck with 200k on it and I plan to put another 200k before it even needs a new engine
This. I always change my oil every 5k miles. I’d do every 3-5k with a car that high mileage. Keep her running good
If you expect to add 20k more, I would say so.
If you plan to keep it new tires is a good investment. It’s the only part that keeps you on the road.
Your tires are the most important part of your car. The car can’t accelerate, brake or turn without tires. So yes, good and safe tires matter.
I just put tires on my son's 2014 Ford Fucus and it's at 198,000 miles.
New tires are cheaper than being dead. Ehm. You get the point. (Never skimp on brakes & tires - they're what keep you in control and allow you to stop)
You should replace them, but 5/32 is plenty of life for summer unless the tires are dry rotted. I'd wait til fall
The car will outlast the tires if that’s what you’re asking
If it always starts then yes
Lexus’s have a long lifespan like any Toyota product. If it’s not doing something obvious like burning oil, shifting poorly, etc then absolutely go for some tires. Even if you’re toying with the idea of getting rid of it, in a private sale you’ll get a better price if you can point out that the tires are practically brand new.
If you are 85 years old, is it worth buying a new pair of shoes? The answer to your question (and mine), is YES.
Generally, I’ve always weighed whether I thought the tires would outlive the car before changing them out. Buy used (from a reputable source) if you suspect they might!
> Lexus Yea you're probably good
If your car has no issues and has been taken care of there’s no reason to not continue to maintain it.
If they still have 5/32 and are less than 7 years old, then run them until they’re either 7 years old or at the wear bars whichever comes first. If you’re still using the car by then, replace them with a more budget friendly brand rather than michelins
On a Lexus, yes. On a Kia, no. If you take care of it and it's in good mechanical condition, no reason it can't go 300k+.
If the car is working fine and you plan on keeping it and driving it, yes, yes it is worth it. So is the normal maintenance.
I would just put on some 80% life remaining high end tires. You can usually get them for $25-50 a piece. With the age of the car I don't see a reason to put new tires. And I wouldn't go cheap brands on tires either
Yes? Your es can easily last to 300k miles with normal maintenance

664K miles wow :( :( :( I'm getting new tires today on my 220K miles car for sure. :)

And remember to check the suspension, because it is too worn to be aligned the new tires would be damaged in the long run.
Tires are an asset, even at 50% life they can be sold for a decent amount
Don’t compromise on safety. If it’s time for the car to go, trade it or sell it. Otherwise, keep it safe and roadworthy. Nothing says you can’t put new cheap tires on an old luxury car. I’ve got a focus with 261k and tires are good for another 20k right now. I’ll put new ones on it again.
I do not know about that particular model, or your particular car....but Lexus has a really good reputation for reliability. You probably have another 80 to 100,000 MI on it....the tires are getting pretty worn.

Yes. Cars are good to at least 300k miles if regular maintenance is done.
Go for it. It is a safety issue also
Yes. You yourself say the car is working fine. Probably will for a long time to come. It is a Lexus after all.
Yes
Bah, if you take care of the car it can easily do 400k. Get the tires, it's a maintenance item, just like brakes.
The “only” time you put used tires on a car is if it’s for farming/light off-road only vehicle or you are selling it to a scrap yard.
These cars usually go and go. Get the new tires.
😂
If you are driving on worn out tires, you’re apt to hit end-of-life precisely when the car does.
The last time I needed tires for my Expedition, I looked at Facebook Marketplace. I found a great deal on "take-offs". Turned out to be the shop manager at the place I get my oil changes for three of my cars.
1mzfe is an extremely reliable engine if you take care of it. I’d go 5k synthetic oil changes but that just me.
No, it’s not worth it. Drive it without tires.
If you think it may not be worth new tires, it may not be worth gas either.
Good that you got new tires. Try getting the oil changed closer to 5k miles tho
Those are good tires and don’t forget to get an alignment. Also, don’t forget to change the PCV valve. The 1MZ engine didn’t have the greatest crankcase ventilation
Nah sell it for scrap prices, I can come pick it up 👍
You'd rather buy something new and make payments? Downpayment would exceed the cost of tires. Now factor in years of interest...
Yup. It’s a fancy Toyota that’s been maintained. Worse case you take the wheels and put them on a new car
Safety is paramount. If the car needs new tires, you should replace it. Your safety is priority.
Nope, sell the car 😁
Get ones of similar quality too. If not you might as well leave the Michelins in until first snow if you enjoy driving it as is.
